If you were up for a promotion and then your boss calls you into their office and says you didn't get it but there was really no reason why you didn't get it, they just picked somone else, no real reason. In that situation what would you do?

Urinate on their desk.
Bash your computer with a hammer.
Fax a copy of your behind to all of the clients.
Work harder and then just not get another promotion, when one is due to you.
these are just a few examples.

I'd look for another job and make sure that promotions, or at least regular raises in pay, were in the contract.

Id probably reckon that if Id got the promotion it would have looked the same from the other guys perspective.

Then use my administrative access (all IT guys have admin access, and the bosses passwords) to ensure I get the next one :D

I suppose if you live where I do, you'd just be glad you still have a job and think about the next promotion.

I started the job I have now, last November (after being out of work for 4 months) and I have not gotten a raise yet. I've been told I'm doing a great job, but that's about it. Business has not been great so I expect very little raise-wise this November. Jobs are hard to come by where I live, but I am always looking. The best time to look for a job is when you already have one.

And, I doesn't pay to get angry because of a missed opportunity. It would only make you look bad, suffering in silence may be the best way to go until you find something else...if it's what you want, that is.

the company I work for grew over 50% in NET profit going from 600 million to 1 billion this year. This is not the result of a recession or anything. Other people less qualified/intelligent/hardworking/skilled ,honestly all of those, have been promoted over me already. I am sick of this company its time to get the heck of this ridiculous atmosphere. Let them promote less qualified people, and I wholeheartedly hope the business suffers because of it.

Well it looks like a whole different situation than I'm in. As far as my advise...nevermind.

I didnt mean that your advice wasn't welcome or appreciated mate

No worries AzRael. I was kinda kidding in a Gilda Radner sort of way!

There is nothing worse than not geeting the promotion, except when the boss is so stupid to say well you didn't get and there is no reason why. Looks like the boss may have reached his level of incompetence. Seems he could use some training in personel management and maybe some tact.

There are better jobs out there I'm sure... the trick is finding them. And looking for work really sux.

In about 25 years I've had about 18+ jobs and I hate the interview process! :D

Hmmm.....kill the boss! :D

AzRaeL StoRmBlaDe 09-16-2002 06:04 PM

Im just really down because I absolutely abhor my current job, but i just kind of got it as a starting point to move up in the company, but that is obviously not going to happen because of the companies tendency to promote , in a word, MORONS. I mean if they were equally as qualified I wouldn't be even close to as upset, but they are pretty much a walking talking monkey, which maybe be smart for a monkey, but for a human they are a moron. And since they WILL NOT promote me when i get another job i will have wasted 2 years of my life in this pointless dead end job that I completely loathe. My life is just grand right now.

Not true! You have a job while you look for another and more credibility to add to your resume!
Don't look at the down side of the situation...its not your fault that they are morons who promote morons...let having worked for them be a boost to you for bigger and better things!
*hugs*

Use the hammer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Might I suggest a 25 oz Dead On framing hammer, its black with a skull&crossbones on the side. I think you'll like it ;) While a sledgehammer might appear the best choice the framing hammer has far better speed and you'll be able to bash both your boss and his computer with perfect alacrity

Off Topic Alert!!!!

I remember when I asked my wife to buy a "20oz." framing hammer and she went to the hardware store and asked for a "20lb." framing hammer. I can see it now...one swing of the hammer and the nail goes in before you hit it because of fear! :D

the promotion would have been a raise and lead to bigger and better raises, but that of course didnt happen.

AzRaeL StoRmBlaDe 09-16-2002 07:02 PM

LOL @the hammer. instead of pounding in a nail i think it would pound in your wall leaving a pretty nice sized hole.

AzRaeL StoRmBlaDe 09-16-2002 08:51 PM

To be honest I haven't decided what to do yet, other than aggressively lookig for a better job

Timber Loftis 09-17-2002 10:04 AM

Few jobs leave nothing to complain about. Your company may be doing great, and you may deserve everything you didn't get. But, not all companies are doing fine, and your ability to replace your current job depends on how *other* places are doing, not how the one you'd be leaving is doing. Look for a new job - but be glad for what you've got in this economy if it's a decent job.

I don't know your wage or salary, your job duties, or anything at all about your job. To be sure, if your job is shitty, there are other shitty jobs out there. But, if anything about your job is not quite shitty. . . What I'm saying is that if you've been there 2 years and you really wanted the promotion, then the job must be one that's worth having. Those are tough to replace.

Look around . . . but a bird in the hand, no?

Cerek the Barbaric 09-17-2002 11:38 AM

<font color="plum"><font color="orange">Azrael</font>, I feel your pain, my friend. While I haven't had many jobs that actually offered opportunities for promotions, I have been passed over in the application process for a job. The last one went to the nephew of a board member of the company. Oh Well.

You should ABSOLUTELY start looking for a more satisfying job. In the meantime, just follow <font color="skyblue">Moni's</font> advice and keep in mind that your crap-job is at least paying the bills until something better comes along. In my old job (as a Purchasing Clerk) there was no room for advancement, but the company had good health insurance. I have a chronic illness, so I was pretty much stuck there. I didn't care about a promotion (at that time), but I DID complain constantly about the pay scale (which was pathetic). Eventually, I got an opportunity for a managerial position at a different hospital. That's where I am now.

<font color="dodgerblue">Skywalker</font> - I have to disagree with "suffering in silence". My first year as a manager here, I faced a plethora of problems, not the least of which was a "revolving-door" of personnel. While the employees left of their own accord or for lack of performance, it still reflected badly on me. Two weeks before my first evaluation, my boss called me into his office and said that all the doctors for our hospital were demanding that I be fired, because "I never did any work!!!" (I even had one doctor tell me this to my face  )

When my boss told me that, I lost my temper and I told him point-blank that <font color="yellow">"If he didn't like the job I was doing, then he could send me home and hire somebody else!"</font> Afterwards, I couldn't believe I had actually done that, but the boss respected me for standing up for myself. I've now been at this job for 3 years.

As I used to say in my old job "Sometimes, you HAVE to blow your own horn. Otherwise, nobody will even know you have one."</font>

Ronn_Bman 09-17-2002 11:54 AM

I can't say for sure which option I'd use, but I will definately keep the urinated on the boss' desk near the top of the list. :D

AzRaeL StoRmBlaDe 09-17-2002 07:16 PM

I just found out who go the promotion over me and all I can say is MORON. MORON MORON MORON MORON MORON!!!!!!
I can't tell you how much more i hate this place because of that. I thought they promoted some else not as stupid as this person, but this person is worse.
