At about 4pm this afternoon, I left my office building to make a call on my cellphone. I crossed the road and stood on the pavement in front of a semi-constructed building. After a few minutes I was chatting away, when I suddenly realised that I was standing in a cloud of black smoke and that burning debris was falling all around me!
Looking behind me, I saw that flames were belching out of the half-finished building! I legged it up the road, dodging burning and molten plastic that was dropping from the skies above me, trying not to inhale any of the black smoke. The fire brigade turned up a couple of minutes later, and it took them a little while to put the fire out - they were still there an hour and a half later. I have a burnt scalp (not bad, just a bit sore) from where some burning plastic hit me, my eyes are stinging like mad, and I feel as if I've just smoked 3 packs of cigarettes within the last 5 minutes. :( Thankfully no-one was hurt, all the builders got out OK. The thing that gets me is that I didn't even notice the fire straight away, yet I was standing within a few feet of the roaring inferno 0/10 for powers of observation  |
book yourself a check-up, Laura. Just in case
(yes I know i sound like your mother but that doesn't matter ) |
OH MY GOD! Laura, that's so scary!!! I'm glad you feel ok, but I agree with Adam, go see a doctor just to be sure all is ok!
|
Glad you are OK Epona...but ummm you might want to take a course to improve your awarness of your surrounding
How on earth could you ignore the smoke untill you were nearly engulfed? Or were you talking to your Boyfriend on the phone? |
Sounds to me like YOU were hurt! I am really sorry! Also glad it wasn't worse! I hope you are feeling better soon!

I'm OK now, just a little sore spot on my head, everything else has cleared up no problem. I like a bit of excitement! |

Wow Laura, I'm glad you're OK! *hugs*
ROFLMAO, I can just picture you standing there chatting away while cinders and bits of burning stuff drop all around you.. Thank goodness nothing bad happened though... |
Ouch! Hot plastic on the head, that has to hurt! :( Burn pains don't go away quickly either, maybe some cool water on the spot would help? Glad you are OK though, I guess it coulda been worse if you took longer noticing it. Be carful out there gal!
|
Glad you're ok Epona , but I cant get that song from south Pacific out of my head. "There ain't nothing like a claim "
|
Glad you're okay Nigel Try to open your eyes next time something's on fire, it has this odd habit of making your chances of escaping unharmed better
|
Whoa Laura glad your ok!!!!!!!!!! Stay safe
|
Come on Epona - admit it. The reason you didn't smell the smoke was because you were smoking at the time! :D
|
Glad to hear you're okay :D
That was kind of like my cat-someone dropped a cigerette on it and it has a pretty thick fur coat so it didn't realise it was on fire until we threw a bucket of water over it! (sorry to compare you to a cat, btw ) |
Well I´m glad you are in one piece Eponis!!
Be more careful.. Scooter and fires.. don´t take up cliff diving, please! |
Glad your ok Epona!
|
Epona, I recommend a hearing aid and glasses. :D
You really should at least consult your GP about your scalp, as you can't see it (I hope :D ) and it may be worse than it feels. Glad to hear you're (nearly) fine though. |
Thanks everyone! I am fine, really. Have little blister on my head but nothing major, best remedy for minor burns is vitamin E cream or oil, tends to speed up healing I've found - and yes Horatio, I can see it, that's what mirrors are for!
Wolfie - cliff diving? er.. rather not give that a go. When I go to Brighton I tend to do the sensible thing and stop *before* I get to the cliffs ;) Must be a sign that I am now old and responsible eh? Donut - Moi? Surely not. ;) |
Heheh, Hi Epona - well I don't know about that responsible thing ;) - but I can vouch for the old :D . Glad to hear you're OK Nige - I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to my favouite chainsaw :D
|
Hey, just saw this thread. Glad you are all right, Epona.
|
Ouch, Epona, but at least you are ok!
|
That could've been much worse, good thing that you made it out of that okay! Don't worry so much about your awareness though. I know a few people that completely so oblivious of everything when they're talking on the phone. They would've ended up inside the building for sure.

Scary?? Maybe you got too caught up in the conversation to notice the burning building. :D
|
 glad you're ok, Epona!

Yes, seeing a doctor is best, I was in a house fire and though I didn't inhale any of the smoke they still recomended filtering my lungs with oxygen and a whole bunch of black stuff came out that I hadn't even known had gotten in there...
