Earthdog 09-04-2002 08:38 AM

Its been a few days since I checked my Hotmail account. With only about 10 small emails in my Inbox I was very surprised to see my account frozen for Lack of Space. So I check my Junk Mail box. In it were emails from Memnoch, Magik, Link, and three other IW members I cant recall.

Some of the emails had Spanish sounding titles (5 of 6 in fact.) Knowing that these people most likely dont speak spanish they were promptly deleted. Each was 318k in size. Most likely some virus.

Check your emails peoples. If you receive any emails that are 318k DELETE them without opening them.

Thank you for the warning. !!

Attalus 09-04-2002 09:21 AM

Yeah, I got one that was purporting to be from Lady Blue, and was about that size, with an attachment. I deleted it.

johnny 09-04-2002 09:33 AM

I had them too, only they weren't from IW members. They were in Spanish though and all of them had attachments.

Melusine 09-04-2002 09:37 AM

Have received quite a few of those from Javi, Shadowstrider and the Genie.... deleted them outright.

Hey E.D. I didn't see your msn message in time but I tried to respond, I did NOT send you any files. I do not even use my hotmail account, I only have it because it is required for msn. Sorry for the screwup...I did send you an email from my hotmail account right after I saw your message

Sazerac 09-04-2002 10:35 AM

That sounds very much like one of those viruses that was going arond a year or so ago. Looks like it's reared its ugly head again.

It's a virus sure enough. I can't remember the name offhand, but the attachment is generally a .cpl file. DELETE IMMEDIATELY ON RECEIPT!!!!

I also find it slightly worrying that Hotmail's virus checking system seems unable to stop these messages :(

Did you find out the hard way if you catch my meaning? If so what effects does it have?

Hope you can fix the problem if so BTW.

Reeka 09-04-2002 02:06 PM

I get one of these Spanish e-mails every few days from "Shadowstrider" or "Javi". They are all 318k and I have just been deleting them.

FelixJaeger 09-04-2002 02:34 PM

Sigmar 09-04-2002 02:36 PM

Can't anyone trace it back to the sender, and why is he/she targeting Ironworkmembers?

Lord Shield 09-04-2002 02:41 PM

yeh I've been getting them from Memsy, Javi, Shadowstrider and Wolfgir. probably some sort of virus hitting their contact lists

Horatio 09-04-2002 02:45 PM

I haven't checked my hotmail Inbox in AGES, I barely use it anywho, I'll just go check...

Mouse 09-04-2002 03:21 PM

I just got one from Wolfie as well! Exact same list now. Most of them come from Shadowstrider though.

Lord Shield 09-04-2002 03:32 PM

spot on Mouse. There is a .CPL attachment with these things. so does that mean Genie-boy, Javi, SS and the Woof have the virus then? ooh

Megabot 09-04-2002 03:56 PM

Possible, but not likley. It sounds like a virus like Klez - it reads your address book, and uses one of those addresses in the from field. Therefore, a virus email from Memnoch does not indicate that Memnoch has the virus. All it means is that someone with the virus has Memnoch in his address book. So dont go sending flames in return.

All members should virus scan there systems immediatley and get rid of this thing, but realisticaly it aint gonna happen. You can run trend housecall online and that should pick up most viruses, plus its free. Housecall can be found at http://housecall.antivirus.com/ . Remember to scan any backups as well.

Memnoch 09-04-2002 10:40 PM

Some of these worms and virii (like Klez for example) will send themselves from an infected PC by randomly selecting an email address from either the Address Book or your Temporary Internet Files cache to put in both the "From" box and the "To" box. Since the From email address is random it won't show up in your Sent Mails folder.

Some of these virii will activate even if the message gets marked as "Read" in your Preview Pane (even if you didn't open it).

The only solution to this is to update your virus definitions (I update mine daily) and scan regularly, and have your Auto-Protect on at all times.

Reeka 09-04-2002 11:27 PM

These are not "banned members." Just thought I would put that in.

Firestormalpha 09-05-2002 12:05 AM

Don't discount the possibility (however small it may be) of vengeful spammers who've been banned. At any rate the only suggestion is, as stated previously, keep an eye out for suspicious e-mails and delete anything you don't trust.

Earthdog 09-05-2002 12:45 AM

I never really believed the McAfee virus scanner provided by Hotmail actually worked. After reading some of the posts here I tend to belive that even more strongly. Its a worm, true. But its more than a year old so youd think that McAfee would pick it up. Thank God its free because Id hate to be paying for something that doesnt work.

You want to know the scary thing. After reading some allegations on macafee on this board I looked for some independent virus evaluations. Macafee scored second best.

Desuma Malevois 09-05-2002 03:03 PM

A quality anti-virus program with regularly updated virus definitions is THE BEST defense against Klez and similar viruses; in addition, if you have Outlook Express, you should make sure that you have the viewer pane disabled before checking/reading your email.

Lord Shield 09-05-2002 03:05 PM

McAfee sucks IMO. I use Norton - updates come much sooner
