Bokken 09-03-2002 10:17 AM

I'm not sure if it's true but it's kick ass! The Greek government is once again turning into the raving mad-men they always were! A few more months and I'll be able to go home!!! hehe

Deathbringer 09-03-2002 10:19 AM

That is the dumbest law I have ever seen! what a load of crap! I'm SURE it will stop illegal gambling *cough*

MagiK 09-03-2002 10:22 AM

Holy crap! Jeez, they just up and banned all electronic and computer gaming.... I for one am really really glad I do not live there :(

This law is a pile of shit :(

However I would like to point out that Greece is one of my favourite countries in the whole world - you may not want to live there, but please, please, if you're ever in Europe go see it. Wonderful country

Sigmar 09-03-2002 10:33 AM

It's true alright, ask Sir Bryonas who told us a while back. Something about violence I believe, the government wasn't happy with the messages being sent across by games like GTA3.

johnny 09-03-2002 11:44 AM

Maybe they wanna go back to the days of the dark ages ? :D

Jorath Calar 09-03-2002 12:33 PM

Oh Yeah, the dark ages, the times before hygene (sp?) became popular...
you mean next they are going to ban the soap... ?

But seriously that is a crazy law

The blanket ban was decided in February after the government admitted it was incapable of distinguishing innocuous video games from illegal gambling machines.

One would have thought it simple enough, but thats politicians for you. Cant really say what I think of this law, this being a family forum and all.

AzRaeL StoRmBlaDe 09-03-2002 05:36 PM

Thats definitely in the top ten of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen. I'm completely dumbfounded by the ignorance of greek lawmakers. Do they really think that illegal gambling needs to be prohibited badly enough to completely outlaw video games? There isn;t any sort of rational logic behind it. I really hope they repeal this ridiculous law.

Hesperex 09-03-2002 05:49 PM

why don't they just ban technology.

Don't know the details of how Greek government work, but I give this legislature at most 1 year, at best.

Lifetime 09-04-2002 01:53 AM

Hhaha.. silly rule. Now all the Greeks are just gonna migrate here to Melbourne :D :D we're like a second Athens..
What kinda government is so self-proclaimed stupid that they dont understand the difference between gambling and gaming? (Greeks, yes I know)

I remember when they tried banning Half Life in Singapore. Pretty much showed them where THAT went.

Dundee Slaytern 09-04-2002 02:15 AM

I quote from friend in paraphrase,
Quote:

"They banned Half-Life and replaced it with Soldier of Fortune?!?!"

- remark after finding out what was in the LAN center
Anyhoo, after several hundred petitions( which I signed as well), the ban got lifted.

Rimjaw 09-04-2002 03:25 AM

I have a feeling they've banned Grand Theft Auto 3 over here as well. Because I haven't seen it on the shelves yet. Anyway, in my opinion I doubt any member of the Board of Censors plays computer games on a regular basis, besides Solitaire and Minesweeper. Same goes for the Greek parliament.

I still shudder in abject horror over the abysmal title, "Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shioked Me". Way to go on putting us on the international scene of embarassment... ...

What were the censors thinking? Were they even thinking?!?!

Rimjaw 09-04-2002 03:49 AM

IU have no idea which Public servant was on an acid trip when he came up with that idea. If the authorities had a problem with the word 'shagged' then they could always change the title to simply "Austin Powers 2". Thank God they left Goldmember alone.

K T Ong 09-04-2002 05:28 AM

Surely at least the Greek government shouldn't ban the game Zeus: Master of Olympus.

Lifetime 09-04-2002 10:01 AM

For all the intelligence of the Singapore government, we still lack the virtue of common sense. And it doesnt look like the next generation will be any better. Bunch of mindless zombies cranked out of the Singaporean Lobotomy..uh.. Educational.. system..

Since you brought up that game, did you know Sierra announced their next game in that line, and it will be about ancient China ? I've seen screenshots of that game and it looks great. That surely must have your interrest.

Didn't know about that, but I reckon I'll check it out. Thanx for letting me know. ;)

K T Ong 09-05-2002 03:02 AM

Have to agree to some extent, actually -- Singapore's education system really is what one would call a 'pressure cooker' system. I know -- I currently have a couple tuition students and their lamentations regarding school are all too familiar to me. And in fact I once tried teaching as well -- after one year, I quit. (Oh, and it's actually also occured to me that Lifetime might be a (former?) Singaporean, too.)

But yes, we're getting off topic. So, I'll stop here. ;)

GokuZool 09-05-2002 06:29 AM

So they banned ALL electronic games!? Isn't that a weird thing to do if you want to stop illegal gambling?

Rimjaw 09-05-2002 06:38 AM

As somebody else on another board pointed out: The "problem" with internet gambling is that most companies are based in offshore tax heaven, law heaven small countries. Therefore governments cannot get their greedy hands on a cut of the profits pie from online gambling. As the saying goes - "Dont steal. Government hates competition."

K T Ong 09-05-2002 08:52 AM

But what about say single player PC games? Why should those be banned too?
