Opening thread 2 after discussions started in the "Stand up and be counteed" thread
me, I'm considering taking on my barkeep role again (hope all the old patrons can make it) :) |
I'm too new to understand that...care to explain it to me on msn please? Pretty please?

Still worth the try though. Oh, and didn't you start this thread to continue Donut's original one? This off-topic strand might merit a thread of it's own...? Or we could just ask the bouncers and the others who were involved if they want to start a new bar thread in chat or something. I'm confused. Is this a continuation of the "Stand Up and Be Counted" thread, or a reopening of "Lord Shield's Bar"?
|
Kalita, just a friendly tip: you might want to consider stopping to "hoard" quotes.
In other words, when you quote someone remove all the previous quotes-within-quotes that are displayed in the window. It saves a lot of space and is much easier on the eyes and nerves. |
Bar ? does this mean I can finally get that drink I asked for last year ?

Actually Mel ,that would be a good idea. If we could get at least me, you, Neb and Azzy in MSN we could figure out the bar again [ 08-26-2002, 02:36 PM: Message edited by: Lord Shield ] |

I think it should be the continuation of the original discussion in Donut's thread, that's why I suggested that the topic of reopening the BG2 Bar could be discussed among the people who were around in the old Bar threads. Edit: Quote:
Would you guys mind waiting a little though? Haven't got any chat programs installed at the moment and have a kind of busy week ahead... Will be available ASAP [ 08-26-2002, 02:42 PM: Message edited by: Melusine ] |
Oh, okay, sorry Melusine I'm still a relative newbie here and I haven't mastered the commands yet *looks embarrased and scuffs her boots on the floor*

Hmmm.... Post fun threads that aren't serious. But do not turn them into spam-fests. Be social. Don't just post serious discussions. Those are my suggestions..... Oh, and: "Bring Back Lord Shield's Bar!"
|
|
Might not be appropo, but I would like to state for the record, that while the Cafe is meant to pick up conversations that might otherwise off-topic or 'spam' a different thread, it is NOT a free-spam-trash area. I have noted that several people have made comments to the effect that all the Cafe is for is spam and I just wanted to be clear here.
I for one do NOT consider a 'social' conversation to be spam unless it interrupts a thread's flow considerably and am hoping it's not considered such by people I've known and posted with for a few yrs now. LOL, if you think about it, alot of our 'off topic' stuff in the old days would be considered out of place here these days. And frankly, I think some of our best stuff started as 'off topic'. Hmmm, Donut, if it weren't for 'ot', i'd never have offered that tapdance in the fountains! Some of our fun stuff was also rp if you'll recall. Somehow that never gets going now because most folk who would participate aren't active in the RP board- those things started up spontaneously in GD or the old BG. I loved the evil smiting and Tipsy the thief and Rikard/Wah/Melusine threads! Cloudy [ 08-26-2002, 03:36 PM: Message edited by: Cloudbringer ] |
Good post/point Cloudyhoney.
I noticed that too(that a lot of the memberage seemed to think that the Cafe was a Spam Zone). The few times I've participated in it, I noted stuff that, yes, could be considered spam, but I also noticed quite a bit that was actually the sort of thing that gets discouraged in other threads. The "Hi, how was your day?" "Fine. How've you been?" sort of posts. IMNSHO, the Cafe is a wonderful addition to IW, and GD would be a lot poorer without it. |
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm enjoying myself reading the old Bars... perhaps someone should set up the Bar as a NWN online mod?

First of all, all of you who participated in Donut's thread deserve to be congratulated. Well done!!
The reason? You managed to bring a potentially dividing issue out into the open and discuss it in a positive and value-adding way, like mature people. Sure, tempers got short at times. Sure, people may have been offended at certain times. But that's all part of the give and take of SELF-REGULATION and MODERATION. I thought Melusine and Donut raised very good points: a moderator's primary function is to moderate threads, perform certain admin functions like locking/unlocking/moving threads, to quell flamewars, to remove obvious spam threads, and to ban trolls. It is NOT a moderator's primary function to constantly make judgments on thread quality - that responsibility rests with to ALL of you. The reality is that there will ALWAYS be threads that people won't like - the term "spam" can be applied to almost any thread that does not have a serious topic. This in itself is not a problem as long as they are 1) kept in moderation; and 2) kept in a thread of their own. It's when these threads start to proliferate, and proliferate from the actions of a handful of people - that they get noticed and people start to complain about them. The onus is on ALL of you to make sure that you make sure this does not get out of hand. As Mouse said, we don't want to have a forum which is very tightly, rigidly controlled by a Kremlin set of moderators - but by the same token we don't want a forum where the front page is full of rubbish and anyone can post what they want. We're looking for a balance - sometimes the pendulum swings one way, sometimes the other - the responsibility is with all of us as Ironworks members to make sure that over time balance in maintained. It's not all bad - the huge response to Donut's thread has shown how much ALL of you care about Ironworks in your own way. If it had gotten few replies then I would have been more concerned - that would have shown apathy. And I'm especially proud of the fact that over the course of that entire thread everyone was able to collectively self-moderate themselves without intervention from Saz, Mouse, Ziroc or myself. I deliberately didn't say anything over the course of that entire thread to see if you could all come to some sort of agreement on how to go forward (you haven't quite yet from what I can see, but you're all moving in the right direction). This is how we used to do it when we posted on the old blue board - since we didn't have ANY moderators, we listened to each other, we took each other's feelings into consideration, and we collectively came up with solutions that everyone was happy with. We want all members to feel EMPOWERED that they can work to make this forum better, no matter who they are. Well done, and I look forward to reading any further discussions with interest. Blimey. Have to go back on reading... missed the forum
|
How about we round this argument up and get on to some important (bar) matters
Personally I believe that spam threads should be allowed to exist as long as its in moderation and in good taste. We should also ensure that the spam doesn't leak into other threads (as in the case of the bunnies a while back). A little spam is good for the soul :D So next time someone makes a rebellion/invasion/war thread it should be resticted to one thread (or possibly 2) and then replaced with another one until the topic itself is exhausted and finished. So what say you good people of Ironworks, sound right? I'll be more than willing to abide by the above guidelines above. If you don't agree what do you think the policy on spam should be? I suppose this topic acts as a BUMP too. |
im really quite pissed that i missed these threads while in bed or at school
but my hurried 2 cents befor work would be . if something interests/intrigues/amuses or even infuriates you then post if not and you have in interest or nothing of value to contribute then dont atall |
One of the bar threads spawned the Pillow Fight. This beast spread into GD forum and in so many threads it was untrue. Somebody tried to start the thread on TeamBG after seeing it, but it fizzled out. I started a pillow fight thread on CRC but it stayed as a single thread. Only on IW could it survive and grow ;)
I have a few ideas to change the bar, so as not to use the exact same formula, bu tessentially it will be similar to the earlier threadsd with me posting an occasional crisis or event. I do not want to use the tavern threads for RPG quests (that was what killed the bar). Such threads can be totally separate I feel btw, Memsy, get your kit off ;) |

Attalus, I know. ;) I will upgrade and get it as soon as possible, if only to MP with my friends. But it takes a bit longer for me I should imagine :D
Still, my time will come ;) Tancred... mwahahaha... I've just raised the amount of reparations I demand. My lawyer will be in touch. |
I'm sure Tancred could be suitably punished in the bar ;)

But you're right, the risk of an intoxicated talking sword is just too much to handle. Damn, will have to think of a better punishment. :D ..... I seem to recall that Tancred and Karnas swapped places so the sword has the spirit of Tancred now while Karnas uses the paladin's body. Did that change back in the end?
|
That DID happen... but the pair of them were left behind on the Plane of Slaughter as Karnas went vampire-hunting in some tower.
Since then, Tancred had been seen tramping around looking for an adventure with Karnas the sword, passing within 3 miles of the position of Blandamour and Galadria in 'Hazardous Times'... but never actually getting involved. Next, they were seen running OUT of heaven, passing by and saying a quick 'hi!' to the party on the way (Legolas, Shade, Skye, Lioness and a few others), and Tancred was looking very grizzled and a bit older... so something clearly had sorted out that problem by then. Tanc refers to having 'walked four worlds' before returning to the Bar, so it's clearly been a long time... This is just one of those things you're never going to find out about; neither myself nor Karnas really wants to go into it. (eep) Karnas - was it fate or irony that he ended up trapped in a Bastard Sword? |
To tell you the truth, the Bar had started to go a bit... critical... by then; about 3 or more different RPG threads packed into one Bar. All the stories were a bit confused back in those dark ages. I think too many of us started writing our own story over everyone else... and I got into melodrama instead of comedy. BIG mistake...

Unless Tancred likes that sort of thing. ;) </font>
A wedgie, wearing metal underwear? *owch* Hell, one thing that we had in the Bar was a group dynamic. There was an esprit de corps among the Bar patrons... even the weird ones like killer and Encard were regarded as a particularly zany part of the bunch. You could probably analyse it; my role was primarily the Comic Relief, for example. Once that group dynamic broke down, the Bar died. Just like any community, I suppose. |
