Nice friendly open minded people on forums-obnoxious rude and arrogant on chatrooms.

Ever encountered this before? I have, people who you thought you knew adopt a whole new persona.

Are you the real you on the forums? Are you hiding any certain charateristic you posess to make you seem more appealing to onlookers, so that you might "fit in"? I know a user on an other forum who's a real jerk who expresses what he thinks,it might not be what you want to hear but it's him and his opinion. For that I respect him because he says what he thinks despite the risk of unpopularity. Sure it's nice to have an all time friendly atmosphere in forums but not if it comes at the cost of true indivduality. I've felt on a number of occasions if this person is really as friendly as he makes out to be or if someone is holding back.

Am I encouraging flaming? No.
Am I being a idiotic bigot? I hope not.

I admit to modifying my personality win certain situations (when confronting a troll I do not react as I would want to but as the TOS state I must).

Are you acting like the real you?

What is your opinion on this matter? I'm curious as to what others believe.

Sazerac 08-25-2002 01:52 PM

I can assure you that I'm just as crusty in real life as I am here. ;) :D

Attalus 08-25-2002 01:56 PM

Like Saz, I am crusty, and opinionated to boot. :D

Chewbacca 08-25-2002 01:57 PM

I yam what I yam and thats all that I yam....

I'm a yam!

johnny 08-25-2002 01:58 PM

I think so, in real life i talk all the time, sometimes maybe a little too much. Same thing here. :D And in chatrooms i'm the same as here, i don't have the need of putting up some masquerade.

Iron_Ranger 08-25-2002 02:01 PM

Actually yeah I Do come off a little bit diffrent here then I do in RL, dont know why.

MagiK 08-25-2002 02:03 PM

I am as much me here as I am anywhere Real life or cyber I am just me...or as Popeye put it..I yam what I yam and thats all that I yam.

Jerome 08-25-2002 02:09 PM

*shrugs* I don't know how I come across here, so I coulden't tell you. ;)

Sigmar 08-25-2002 02:09 PM

See people I was expecting these replies, no offene to anyone but you aren't going to say "Well I'm a jerk in real life and I act nice here so I can make friends". (not mocking anyone here, or being intentionally rude)

So let's take this in a differant direction, have you ever encountered anyone who seemed OK in forums but acted completely differant in chatrooms or in real life.

Sorry for confusing you folks.

I don't know, 'cause I have never met anyone in RL that I have met in a chatroom. In fact, the only person that I have met on IW is Galadria and she must like me, since she married me. ;)

Moni 08-25-2002 02:20 PM

I probably talk a lot more in RL (lol johnny) than I do here but I am basically the same person here that I am in real life...with the exception of some of the crazier posts I've made recently (Peasant Uprising thread for instance). You won't find me claiming to hide under a giant tortilla in real life, nor would I make one to hide under, although I did pull the snapping finders, hand making gimme motions with an order of "Cheese!" (to KHaN) in a Mexican restaurant just yesterday when I ate some hotter than I thought it was salsa on some chips before our food got to the table LOL.

Actually, I am probably more obnoxious in RL (how can it be) than I am here since most of us don't know each other in RL (or as well as we might want to believe over the internet), and I am not afraid to goof off with people I am familiar with (beyond my first encounter with Bokken LOL). I try to use caution where I might hurt someone's feelings or rub them the wrong way with a remark that I think is funny, or at least a remark that is meant to be.

Don't ask me my opinions on people I believe are complete phonys both in forums and in chat rooms lol.

Melusine 08-25-2002 02:25 PM

I met several people in France this year, two of whom I'd met before, and I all know them through this forum.

They weren't at all as I expected them to be: Donut was even cleverer than I thought (damn manacles :D ), Epona snored like a guy (just kidding Nigel! ), Moiraine (as well as her family) was ten times more generous than any sane person should be, nobody liked salty licorice except for Wolfie which was another unexpected blow, Davros liked Fosters which I never thought he would, SirTainly didn't have a horse at all, nor any penguins, Mouse and Wolfie had promised me hot animal love but they weren't quadrupedal and furry at all, what a disappointment! and Electroman... I mean Yorick, was a lot more electronically challenged than the first time I met him!

In short Sigmar, maybe most people really ARE speaking the truth when they say they'r roughly the same online as in "real life".
All the people I met so far certainly attest to this.

Yeah, i have, but i don't think it's fair to mention their names here.

Melusine, I never doubted this possibility and I did believe the people above. I just meant that you're not going to openly admit you're a scumbag in real life to all the forum regulars are you?

Thanks for the input.

Piestrider 08-25-2002 02:33 PM

Well, let me put it like this. In real life i'm a 15 (almost 16) year old from America. If I acted like i probably do at school on the forum, then i doubt that anybody could stand me. Then again, i do try to be myself on the forum, so i guess thats for everyone else to decide.

True, so what did you expect? ;)
BTW, I've seen the opposite a lot: people who are absolutely insufferable online, I mean REALLY trollish, but of whom I have no doubt they might be fun to hang out with offline. Probable reason is that they let the whole internet-clique thing get to them too much - they take things online a tad more serious than they should...
And I'm sure most of us have heard about internet predators who appear nice in public but get nasty in emails or PMs... but I doubt you'd get either of those people to post here, so the best you can hope for is people who are only slightly different... For instance I imagine a lot of people chat to and befriend people more easily on the Net than off it, but I would actually say that's simply because the two forms of communication are different.

SomeGuy 08-25-2002 02:40 PM

I act like a goof online, when in real life I'm.....well I'm actually the same. I yam what I yam,and this is what I act like!

Azred 08-25-2002 02:51 PM

Of course I am the same whether on-line or off-line. Why should I bother being someone I am not?

Piestrider, always be yourself. People here will accept that, I assure you. And stay in between the dotted white lines.

John D Harris 08-25-2002 02:56 PM

I'm the nicest, kindest, most polite Hard Case SOB you'll ever meet, on or off line.

Lady Blue03 08-25-2002 02:57 PM

Um, im a lot more contained on this forum then i am in chat rooms and RL. My attitude is generally the same all around, but when unrestricted im obnoxious, rude, talkative, and very flirtatious (everyone in DMs Realms knows that). Well im the funny obnxious rude, not the annoying kind, :D

Beaumanoir 08-25-2002 02:58 PM

I Don't Think One Person Can Say About Themselves... I Think It Would Need Somebody Who Knows Them In R/L, AND On The Forum...

But I Do Try To be Me :D

NOT FUNNY! :D I WAS FREAKING OUT THIS MORNING BECAUSE OF THAT! luckily, it happened while i was driving to church instead of sneaking out to go partying or something.

Attalus 08-25-2002 04:47 PM

LOL, but it is funny.

whacky 08-25-2002 04:55 PM

Well i'm the same everywhere though i must say dont be fooled, i am very very unpredictable. Most of the time im really really nice but i do loose temper on insensitive, not-so-intelligent people. And..... i love to have fun, well johnny and moni im up you guys in the list of people that "talk too much" but not usually non-sense, and i havent really wandered into the realms of online chat but usually,as i hear, people there make fools of you.!!

Tancred 08-25-2002 04:58 PM

I admit to being a little quieter than I am on chatrooms... but just as strange. I also have a nasty, snide little streak that I'm able to edit out when writing posts, but in RL just tends to creep in to what I say. Folks who know me tend to take it as it comes, though... they just regard it as part of my 'sense' of 'humour'.

Dramnek_Ulk 08-25-2002 05:03 PM

Hmmm,
No
I’m Arrogant, Occasionally sensible and coherent, Trollish yet playful and tolerant almost everywhere I go,
(Although the TOS, do of course Make us all behave in a much more Civil manner here)

WillowIX 08-25-2002 05:03 PM

Yes I´d like to think I´m the same chattering, "somewhat" confused, smiling and totally lost self in here or on any other forum (2 others than IW) . But then the surrounding plays its part and on this forum it´s probably impossible to become sad :D

Calaethis Dragonsbane 08-25-2002 05:23 PM

erm, I dont know. I tend to "relax" more around my friends, online or offline and I guess I'm usually "nicer" around them. You'd have to meet me I guess lol. But, I tend to show my "better" side when I'm around friends, and since I have the honour of calling several of YOU ppl friends at IWs ... Ill leave you to work it out.

Talthyr Malkaviel 08-25-2002 06:51 PM

Well, I'm the same person here and in r/l, but online I'm more me than in r/l, whether it be my true personality or a mask, unless that is my personality.
Make of that what you will.

Megabot 08-25-2002 07:01 PM

I am the same crazy guy in chat rooms as in the forum and real life i am almost insane haha :D

john 08-25-2002 07:08 PM

Maybe if in real life you could see what you are about to say before to "hit" the send button we'd all be a little different!

That's a good point. Although I think that I have a sort of mental submit button in my head lol. Online I often think rude things about posts but don't comment, offline I do the same. I don't tend to be argumentative in real life except with people I'm very close to, and I'm the same online; I'll think something but not say anything. Later I might regret it but what can you do? ;) People I chat with know I'm always up for a good stoush, but on the forum less so because I'm not so close to everyone here. Plus both online and offline I work better one-on-one than with a lot of people coming from all sides. So I'm pretty much the same online as offline

You might not want to admit to that here. Azred points at Attalus and Galadria. You never know who might be reading things.

The Hunter of Jahanna 08-25-2002 09:56 PM

I am a little less abrasive online than I am IRL, but that is just because sarcasm doesnt do well in text alone.

Paladin2000 08-25-2002 11:24 PM

I am as real in person as I can be. Frankly I don't see the need to disguise myself to be more "interesting" or something else (no pun intended).

canadianvixen 08-25-2002 11:35 PM

I guess I'm the lone person on IW who is very different here than in real life. In real life I'm very, very shy. The kind of person who doesn't usually speak unless spoken too. I do have a job that requires me to spend a lot of time with the public but I'm always greatful for my quiet time when it's all said and done. I'm much more open with people here than I am in person. In real life I seldom let people know anything about me, like the fact that I'm shy.

Firestormalpha 08-25-2002 11:41 PM

In all honesty I am slightly more flamboyant in the forums. For the one reason that I have the time to stop and think out my response, or I can just fly off the handle and not have to fear a face to face rebutle. When it really comes down to it I'm just a good-looking 18yr. old with the life outlook of a kid.

The Ornery One 08-25-2002 11:49 PM

I've only met a couple of people in r/l that I met on-line. One wasn't as nice as he seemed on-line or over the phone, the other one is even nicer than he is on-line. As for myself, I still hold back until I get more familiar with people but am a little wilder when I'm playing on-line cribbage. Even if I seem quiet to most people when first getting to know each other, they eventually learn how preverted and strange I really can be.
