I was wondering, in out multi-lingual little community, if there was anyone present would would spare a few moments to help me out with a few French words.

I know what you're thinking: "use a translator", but quite frankly I trust those tings as far as I can throw them (bad experiences with essays. ;) ).

All i'm wanting is the French words for: "love", "jealousy", "happiness" and "tragedy", for reasons I won't explain just yet. ;)

Also, if anyone could confirm the "Candide" translates to "Optimism", or indeed what it does translate to, i'd also be much obliged.

My thanks in advance.

Jerome 08-23-2002 12:26 PM

If I knew, I woulden't ask.

Melusine 08-23-2002 12:32 PM

AFAIK

l'amour
la jalousie
la joie (that's more like joy though, not happiness... maybe être de bonheur? or is that more like being lucky?)
la tragédie

I thought you had an online translator
Pillaging in one language is silly enough, God forbid it'd get even worse, so I'm going to be silent and leave, fool ;)

Pauly, that doesn't sound quite right. :D You might find it interesting to know, though (you seem to have a liking for such tidbits ), that there's a French rap group that's actually called Nique ta Mére

Lord of Alcohol 08-23-2002 04:13 PM

Just guessing Mel I KNEW I should have checked for cute when angry Dutch girls when I posted that ;) And once again I must prostrate myself before you in ignorance. Whats Nique ta Mere mean?

Melusine 08-23-2002 04:37 PM

You don't want to know. Well, I know YOU do, but most minors here don't ;)

Lord of Alcohol 08-23-2002 04:55 PM

Damn now I have to whine :(

flibulzbuth 08-23-2002 09:08 PM

Candide is better translated by ingenuous or guileless.
I think it used to mean kind/benevolent until Voltaire wrote a book about a character named Candide. After that, candide refered to the character's attitude in debates. blah, blah, blah... stfu flibul!

So? can you give us some crunchy details? Are you translating a letter you just received (ouch!) or sending one (ouch!).

(stfu <-- spent too much time on battle.net)

You'll get no reasons from me, though any guesses you have would probably be something to amuse us all with.

Lord Shield 08-24-2002 04:46 AM

have checked with another French speaker. sot does indeed mean "stupid". The nearest word to fool would be imbecile but there's an accent over the first "e"

and I still don't know what pillage is in French LOL!!

What I really need is to run this past a native speaker :D - yoohooo, Moiraine!!!! :D

Naah, fool is a closer translation than stupid to "sot".

Example: You are so foolish! = Vous êtes si sot!

You REALLY want a word for pillage don´t you? :D Here you go: pillage(duuh!!), devalisation, proie, butin, brigandage, ravage, saccagement. Do you need some more :D ?

Thanks Willow! I thought so

WillowIX 08-24-2002 10:49 AM

"You are so stupid (NO, not you LS :D )" = Vous êtes si stupide

Kaltia 08-24-2002 10:50 AM

Heh, although the treans into english is more like ass, because bete with the circumflex means beast as well (usually as in donkey, or ass.)
LS is an ass!

Lord Shield 08-24-2002 07:31 PM

Cheers, Willow
