I've recently got a PC and don't know what games are worth buying. I'm interested in a good first person shooter that I will like. So what's the best one to buy? I have Deus Ex and really like It and have heard that Half-life and Aliens vs Predator2 is good so should I buy one of these or another one? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I got two for ya, Medal of honor 2 and Soldier of fortune 2. Both are outstanding games !
|
And here are a few others: Max Payne and System Shock (1 and 2).
|
Old:
Thief Thief 2 Alien Versus Predator Doom (Now on *free* download if you look hard enough) DoomII (Not on free download AFAIK) Quake QuakeII System Shock System Shock II Deus Ex Dark Forces 2 : Jedi Knight Half-Life Its a long list but those are they good ones ive played - if its old and not there its either crap or i havent played. Either way there should be enough to last a while. New: Quake III Return to Castle Wolfenstein Star Trek Voyager : Elite Force Dark Forces 3:Jedi Knight 2:Jedi Outcast Damn, I used to keep up with FPS, but lately I just cant run them. There are others worth buying but i dont have them. Any game in this list is ace and worth buying. |
Thief
Thief 2 System Shock System Shock II DeusEx None is better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D I playing DeusEx now for 10 time and can newer get tired of it so that is not a bad choice [ 07-22-2002, 03:45 PM: Message edited by: Megabot ] |
If you want to try a bit of realism in your FPS then try Operation Flashpoint. It's very realistic and has 2 add-ons - Red Hammer and Resistance. Resistance includes upgraded graphics if your system has the power to display em (best have a fast 'puter and GF4)
After playing this game all the other fps games out there seem... flat to me (and I've played almost every game listed so far... to completion) If you like plain old brainless fragging... I recommend Serious Sam and Serious Sam 2, they're a lot of low-cognitive intensity fun. An honerable mention to a couple titles good for multiplayer fun - Unreal Tourney - good multiplayer action Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Single player was boring but it has a very cool Assault mode and some challenging multiplayer maps for it. If you decide to get the classic Doom or its sequel Doom II, get the Doom Collector's Edition. It's got Doom, Doom II and Final Doom (a Doom II add-on) all in one CD, and all for the price of just one game. Really worth it.
You may also want to get Totally Unreal. It's got the original Unreal (visually one of the very best FPS games around IMO), the add-on Return to Na-Pali, and Unreal Tournament Game-Of-The-Year edition all in one package, again for the price of one game. I can strongly recommend Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Half-Life is a must-have for any FPS fan. I also thought No-One Lives Forever was OK, but for me it stops running at one level for no particular reason...

A couple more recommendations.
If you want FPS games that are funny , try Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior by 3D Realms. You can get both for the price of one if you buy the single package East Meets West. They're among the best pre-Quake FPS games you can buy. Speaking of Quake, if you want to buy it, don't. Instead, get Ultimate Quake, which contains Quake, Quake II and Quake III Arena all in one package again and all for the price of just one of them. Good value! :D You can find all the titles I mentioned here. [ 07-22-2002, 08:43 PM: Message edited by: K T Ong ] |
get half-life and play the counter-strike mod for it. it is kick-a**, and widely popular. also, look into playing the rogue spear series. they are superb games as well.

Half-Life is truly superb when it first starts off; after a few levels, though, it starts getting boring -- it's always the same hi-tech/industrial setting. The countless instant-death environmental hazards and the total lack of interesting powerups to collect and use make the game extremely frustrating too IMO.
Red Faction may be a good alternative -- it's very much like a cross between Half-Life and Deus Ex, and certainly less frustrating, plus you get to drive all sorts of interesting vehicles that fly or go underwater. You can blast through some walls and go right through as well. This game's got a lot of communist propaganda, though. Ultimately, I think only you yourself can decide which game you really like. No one else can do that for you. |
I'm not a fps person (just thinking about 'em makes me feel ill with motion sickness), but what about those based on Tom Clancy's books - Rogue Spear & Ghost Recon?

The Quake games rock. But the downside bout the Ultimate Quake is that Team Arena doesn't come with it, so if u just want Quake 3 and Team Arena, get Quake 3 gold. Team Arena is the add-on to Quake 3. Eagerly awaiting Quake 4, but that is gonna be awhile. The just started making it.

I'd have to say, get Jedi Knight 2. Awesome game, especially when it comes down to lightsaber combat. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 are getting old, but are still good, most people prefer UT to Q3, because Q3 seems like it was made for people who were weaned on the earlier Quake games. Q3 caters naturally to the Quake 2 crowd, people who want an insanely fast, skill-driven experience, essentially the best deathmatch possible, and the most twitch-reflex game you've ever played. Nothing else comes close. UT however, along with all the mods, mutators and powerups is the most flexible and diverse FPS around, catering to every kind of experience, from Tactical Combat to CTF to Deathmatch. Some of the mods in UT are really pretty cool.
Then there's AVP2, which is scary as hell until you realise how to properly play the game, in which case its scary adrenalin-filled fun. Nothing like playing with other human beings, since nothing captures the mind of a wall-crawling Alien more than a very demented human being. Serious Sam 1 & 2 are excellent stress-relief games, Red Faction is an average FPS with a really cool game mechanic, Max Payne is just oozing class.. You're really spoiled for choice if you've got the specs to run these babies. |
i think most of the good first person games out there have been mentioned. other than them i can only suggest Blood II, command and conquer: Renegade and Kingpin. all of wich are good games.

Thanks for the suggestions. Wow I never knew there were so many! I'm a big fan of the Alien movies so maybe I'll get AliensVSPredator2 but I'll have to think about this, once again thanks for the suggestions.
