Hi, all!

First of all, I wanted to commend everyone on having resized the graphic portions of your signatures. Pretty much everything is in order there, and for newbies who come in with larger ones, the other members have done their part to alerting them as to the size restrictions. Thanks a bundle!

Now, to the next part. It has come to my attention (and I name no names here) that quite a few of you have signature lines that are WAAAAY too long. Although we have no hard and fast rule here at IW, based on the rules of Netiquette, the signature file should never overpower the message.

The maximum number of lines in any non-graphic signature should be no more than 7, and that's for a professional one. An example of that would be:

John Doe, Consultant
ABC Information Systems
123 Tile Forest Way
Anywhere, US 12345-6789
Phone: (111) 222-3333
Fax: (444) 555-666
E-mail: jdoe@abcinfo.com

Since there's no practical reason why anyone here would need a professional signature, and most of you have graphic signature files, I'd recommend keeping the total lines of text of the signature to 4 or less, including "smilies", blank lines, and what-have-you.

Here is an example of how 90% of the posts out there look with these mega-long signatures. This is what it looks like from my end:

<hr>
Hi, buddy! How'ya doin?

---------------------
<font color="#ffffff"> http://www.wizardrealm.com/images/fireworks7.gif
Who's da bomb? I'M da bomb!!!

Official party-animal of Ironworks
Lord High Master of the Known Metaverse
Beloved of Cuddlybunkins
Deadly Ninja of the High Muckamuck Clan

"Omigawsh, Maynard, I jest dropped mah pants!"</font>
<hr>

OK, that was probably a bit much, but you get the idea. ;) Can we all please try to curb our exuberance for adding more and more text and smilies to the sigs? I think most of what can be said can be done in no more than 4 lines. Try to design your sig to where it doesn't overpower your message, especially if you're fond of one-line posts.

Thanks! Once again, this is just a suggestion...but do give it some consideration.

Cheers,
-Sazerac

I'm totally in agreement with my fellow mod on this. Let's all just exercise a bit of restraint.

I'm in the agreement there... there were.... posts with too looooong sig that I really want to read the next post in the thread.

to edit: it figures that Saz swings his axe to cut the sigs LOL

Yeah i can agree there! many BIIIIG sigs here on the forum! :D

RudeDawg 07-10-2002 03:08 PM

Heard and obeyed !

Cut three lines off. Bet no-one notices, either.

Dundee Slaytern 07-10-2002 03:12 PM

Er... is my signature considered too long? I only use it either when I need to refer to it, or when my actual post exceeds the signature's length. By default, I do not use my signature.

Ach, you mean I can't bring back my signature of the many titles to torture romey with? ;) That was over fifteen lines, without spaces, smileys, or quotes.

Heard and noted, Saz!

Nope, you're fine, Calaethis...especially since you don't use a graphic.

johnny 07-10-2002 06:55 PM

I'll take out the "k", can i keep the "j" ? :D :D

Attalus 07-10-2002 07:05 PM

How about this?

Melusine 07-11-2002 05:21 AM

Attalus, your sig is fine I think, but just a suggestion: I think it would look much better and tidier without that long and ugly link - why don't you make a hyperlink out of the words "Galadria's Novel" instead? Here's what I mean:

you have:
Attalus, First Reader of Galadria's Novel, at http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/cg...c;f=5;t=002123

you could make it:
Attalus, First Reader of Galadria's Novel

Bahamut 07-11-2002 05:30 AM

EDIT: Forget I said that LOL!

I will resize it a bit :D

Only an idea i have here why not "disable" the sig after your first post in a new topic?

Only clik in the "Show Signature: include your profile signature" next time you post in the same thread? Then we only get your sig one time and maby the forum also would get a little faster here to! Only a suggestion! :D It can be a little annoying to se the same sig hundreds of times in the same topic!

Melusine 07-11-2002 07:37 AM

That's a good point Megabot, I believe it's already being done in the Roleplaying Forums. It would not need to be applied to all threads, but for topics like Cloudy's Cafe, where a relatively small number of people post a relatively large number of posts, I think it would be a great help - and it looks less cluttered too.

Good point Sazerac!

I have changed my sig length from about 12 lines down to 5. I also think the only having one sig pic per page is a good idea, and will attempt to comply.

Madman-Rogovich 07-11-2002 08:51 AM

i reckon mine should be in order what say ye?

Yeah, I just updated mine. Is it ok? I haven't tested it yet.

Sazerac 07-11-2002 10:47 AM

Hi, guys! The amended sigs look great...just wanted to give a big thumbs-up to you!

The "one sig per thread" is a great idea...I just don't think it's that realistic, though, in the long run. It will probably last for about 15 minutes, until everyone forgets to check off the little box before hitting "Reply" because, by default, sigs are enabled. When you're in the heat of posting, it's hard to remember to turn that off.

So don't worry too much about that. Try to keep the massive sigs down as much as possible, but don't lose sleep over it. ;)

Cheers,
-Sazerac (and thanks!)

Yeah is there any way you or Z can "disable" that "Reply" because, by default, sigs are enabled" ARE enabled? Only wondering! And it is working great in "Ironworks Online RolePlaying" but it is not so mutch people there as in GD but way not give it a trie Zaz?

I know *I* can't...that would be Ziroc's province, but I think it would require a complicated mod to the UBB code.

-Saz

Dundee Slaytern 07-11-2002 11:14 AM

I prefer the default last time, when sigs were not enabled by default. It can be a minor bother when you have to edit your post simply because you forgot to uncheck the radiobox.

Megabot 07-11-2002 11:18 AM

Ok Saz i shall "trie" to remember to turn of the sig anyway so let`s se how it will work out it seems that Avi and Mel and some other people here think this is great so lets hope it works to turn of the sig`s when we post! LOL :D Maby Lady Blue also follow this if she want! :D

I doubt i'll bother to uncheck the show sig button very often.
But then my sig is quite small nowadays.
I dont think its very overpowering.
It seems to me that when you have a bunch of text in your sig
you are just posting the same thing over and over again, in a way.
I know i for one dont read all that stuff. I may read it once, but thats it.

Sir Mandorallen 07-11-2002 08:15 PM

<font color="silver">Mine was huge, now that I really look at it.
Twelve lines total, not counting the picture.

So, I shaved off six lines from mine, but I'm not sure...

Is it still too big?? </font>

slackerboy 07-11-2002 08:56 PM

well here's how i see it.

was it really neccissary to say all of that? I mean, its not witty, or funny, or sobering, or particularly interesting. Does anybody really want to read it over and over again? What purpose does it serve? Is there really a great army in which you hold a high rank? I doubt it. Are we really going to be rewarded for joining? I doubt that too.
So in the end was all of that neccissary?
When i see your sig, i can see your picture.
I know its you, then i see a bunch of text
that i have to scroll past. Does it help
Define your character? Not really, Your posts
do that.
And hey, i'm not picking on you in particular. you were just the last post :D . i have nothing against you, lots of peoples sigs could be filled in just the same. Thats just how I see the whole sig issue.

Loumistro 07-11-2002 09:06 PM

Well I am not sure if this was suggested or not. But on the Wizards and Warriors Thread we only post our sig once per thread. mainly because reading and seeing the same thing over and over just gets boring.

Sir Mandorallen 07-11-2002 09:13 PM

<font color="silver">Very good point slackerboy! I agree wholeheartedly....

but, umm... there kinda is reasoning to my madness. :D The G.A. (Although, it isn't very likely to take over the world) really does exist. I have recruited on this forum and have several followers. I also have some people from other forums and alot from my home town. :D :D

The part "join now and be rewarded" is our motto, and the titles are simply titles. People who are on this site and are part of the G.A. have put in their own titles as well. Its kinda like a clan, (umm... in a way.) I mean, why put that you are a member of the suchandsuch clan. I already know that, why have useless titles like---

"big, badboy wizard of the crazed clan"
I don't need to re-read it a hundred times.

I would'nt have kept those things there if they didn't mean something to ME.
And maybe thats what is important. If your sig means something to YOU.

Or maybe I'm nuts... who knows. ;)

Oh, and slackerboy, don't worry, I'm not offended. :D You just used me and my sig as an example for a good point.
I hope I didn't offend YOU in any way with this post, though.</font>
