I was just wondering how people who live in countries that used to be part of the British Empire feel towards the British. I was especially interested in the attitudes of people living in India or Pakistan as we were largely responsible for the partition. I know it is unlikely that there is anyone on this forum that is from that part of the world but maybe there are some Muslims or Hindus (even Sihks) who can help me out.

I'm from Australia and I don't think that anyone truly hates Britian, or its people. You will be suprised to hear that a lot of assies admire Britian.

Another American chiming in!
I don't know anyone who thinks badly about the British. Most folks I've met from Britain, IRL and online, seem to be the best-behaved, nicest, politest folks I've ever met. I couldn't be offended by them, even if I tried. Keep up the good works. |

To put it somewhat mildly, I honestly don't like the Brits much as a whole after reading about what they did to us Chinese in the 19th Century -- not to mention what they did to much of the rest of the world, too.
That much said, I do think David Beckham is handsome. |

Totally wierd
Little did I suspect that a thread about Decolonisation could go so far off topic that the relative merits of minor London football teams would become entangled in it. Shame really, I was quite looking forward to reading how former colonial countries regarded their erstwhile masters. Any chance we could get this back on topic? |

There are actually quite a few major figures in modern English history for whom I have great respect -- John Ruskin, Oscar Wilde, Joseph Needham, Christmas Humphreys, Ralph Vaughan Williams, (Albert Schweitzer?)... But nevertheless, I just don't feel good as a Chinese when I read of what happened in the 19th Century. Hey, don't blame me, I'm human. Ex-masters? Sorry, I've got too much pride. As for Tibet, several centuries ago the Manchus conquered China -- and Tibet. Thus Tibet became part of the Chinese Empire through the agency of the Manchus, not the Chinese. Tibet was the first example to spring to mind, The chinese are no 'saints' either, but then niether is the british. ALl Im saying is dont pre-judge ppl coz of their race... I hate this old saying but it fits in well here; 'Dont judge a book by its cover'... I *really* hate old sayings... anyway, lets not get inot an arugment about this ok?
