Seems everyones plugging broadband (cable or dsl) these days. It would be interesting to know what percentage of you use either or? I was on dial up for about a year and finally switched to broadband and can't believe I actually managed to survive with a dial up connection. Downloading demos and patches at 400kb/s on broadband sure beats the 4kb/s on dial up. If your not on broadband, why not?

Dunno, but it won't be long, this is too expensive ! :D

I`m on ADSL
Upload tops 128kb/s, download averages 490 kb/s... But I do still use a 56k sometimes... if I have problems with my ADSL, I can easily tell if it`s a line problem by switching to the dialup... if I have the same problem, it`s the line; if I don`t, then it`s 2 hours on the phone with telstra helpdesk convincing the computer illiterate person on the other end that no it is NOT a problem on my end... I have broadband, and the difference is amazing.
Trouble is you get complacent about it, and if you ever have to use dial up for anything on another machine, it is soooo frustrating. Plus with broadband it doesn't matter if I don't log out, or if I leave my machine on constantly, I only pay one price per month and I am connected permanently. Bliss. Plus I get 30mb of web space for my website, upgradeable to IGB I think. Seeya Lady Zidane |
I will be getting broadband on Monday - BWAHAHA

I already have Broadband MUAHAHAHAHA!

got dsl about a year ago, before that, from netscape v1.0 we used a dial-up. Main reason why we shitched so we could use the net and the phone at the same time and the price finally came down enough so we could afford it. Our connection rate is 256kbs up and down stream.
|
I use dial-up. But that certainly isn't by choice...

Average speed on 56k: 4kb/s
Average speed on my new ADSL: 16kb/s Much better, and the price is similar as well |
Whoa, if that's all you're getting on ADSL you have a problem. You should be around 300kb/s-400kb/s at the very least.
|
I have been using 56K for the past 3 year. I just applied for an ADSL connection, should be in any moment now... Sheesh, I really hate all this waiting game.

DSL won't be available for a year or so, where I live in the boon-docks.... , but we have it at work, course with 500 computers on the mainframe, even ADSL is slow when everyone is on the net at the same time.......

Ok 128kbs is 16k a second they do the measurements of internet speed in kilibites a second not kilibytes a second you have to divide the number by eight to get actuall k's a second as most are regulary looking at it, its a markiting play on the retailers part to fool people into thinking its faster than it really is just so you know.
|
Still on the 64K dialup - damn that blown hot water system - when I get back from my holiday (that's the other expense) I will sign up for 512K broadband.

I could get the one that is capped at 8megabits/s but for that you pay by the megabyte, and it would cost me a fortune! Like over $300 a month. |

Sounds exactly like our telecommunications company... half private; and the A-triple-C don`t care about the price hikes. Blame Johnny Howard... |
