Football AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Helspanth 06-16-2002 06:40 AM

Yes back to football discussions I hope.
So far Germany,England and Senegal have made it to the next phase of the World Cup.
Coming up next today we have Spain-Ireland.
I really hope that Spain wins against the Irish. They(the Irish) play probably the worst football in the competition IMO.No offense to any Irish fans out there.Just my personal thoughts.
Should Spain qualify they play with the winner of S.Korea-Italy.
Anyway GO SPAIN!!!!!

Helspanth 06-16-2002 06:47 AM

Nice to see Spain supporters around!
Johnny how did the Netherlands manage to be eliminated from the qualification round?
I mean you are one of the traditional powers in Europe.I found it strange that you were not qualified.

Memnoch 06-16-2002 07:07 AM

I would hope that all ribbing and gamesmanship on this thread can be kept FRIENDLY. If you feel that someone is starting to get annoyed, be gracious and STOP the baiting as there is nothing to be gained from people getting into arguments over a sport that we all love. And finally, don't dish out what you cannot take.

VAMOS ESPANA!!!

i'm not sure but i think they somehow underestimated Ireland, 3 days before that match they beat England 2-0 and everyone was confident we would beat Ireland as well....and then the team choked. I still can't believe it. It's a shame Bergkamp isn't an international anymore, picture a frontline with V. Nistelrooy, Kluivert and Bergkamp and with Hasselbaink and V. Hooydonk as substitutes. They should blow any opponent right of the field. Ah well, onward to Portugal 2004, we'll be back. :D

Dundee Slaytern 06-16-2002 07:43 AM

Spain: 1
Ireland: 0

Helspanth 06-16-2002 08:52 AM

Casillias saved a penalty kick that was the referee's gift to the Irish.
The result remains 1-0 for Spain.

Memnoch 06-16-2002 08:53 AM

Ireland just got given a penalty (what a load of bollox that was ) as Damien Duff takes a dive in the box. But Casillas SAVED!!!! and Kilbane totally bolloxed up the rebound with an open goal at his mercy. That's what you get for ACTING!!! :D

As for Ian Harte who took the penalty...what a GOOSE!!!!!! :D

Helspanth 06-16-2002 09:20 AM

Ireland equalized with another penalty kick.

Memnoch 06-16-2002 09:21 AM

Ireland just scored a penalty with 2 mins to go, after Hierro was penalized for holding on to Quinn's shirt in the box. Hierro, what were you thinking?!?!?!

Helspanth 06-16-2002 09:22 AM

It is over 1-1 and now there is Sudden Death!

Ar-Cunin 06-16-2002 09:51 AM

And Spaim is playing with 10 men throughout (Albelda was sent off)

Helspanth 06-16-2002 10:05 AM

Penalty kicks.
Keanne scored,Hiero scored,Holland missed,Baraka scores!

johnny 06-16-2002 10:06 AM

rule number one: when your name is HOLLAND, never ever take a penalty kick. :D

Helspanth 06-16-2002 10:09 AM

It's over.Qualified SPAIN!!!!
YES!!!!!

Ar-Cunin 06-16-2002 10:09 AM

Penalties

Ireland..1..0..0..0..1
Spain....1..1..0..0..1

What a game by Casillias. Three penalty saves (+ one on the crossbar).

Spain win 4-3.

AzureWolf 06-16-2002 10:10 AM

NOOOOOOOO AND SPAIN MAKES IT THROUGH!

And there did fall Ireland...

Talthyr Malkaviel 06-16-2002 10:25 AM

Hmm, I'm not too bothered with that match- but I really thought Ireland deserved to win that, aside from the early goal in the first half by spain and their goaly doing a pretty good job, Spain just didn't put up the competition, Ireland were putting so much pressure on Spain that it's a wonder it was a draw up until the penalty, if it wasn't for Casillias I don't think it would've gone to penalty shoot outs, or maybe not even before that. ;)

Remember - they played with 10 men in the extra time

And they played superbly in the frist half - the goal that was disallowed in the 25. minute would have been the goal of the tournament - if Morientes(?) hadn't been just a bit to eager and avoided the off-side.

Memnoch 06-16-2002 12:13 PM

Spain played like a bunch of blind GEESE in the second half, they had the game at their mercy and went into their shells and let the Irish back into it, when they should have put them away. Camacho was LUCKY that he got away with his mystifying decision to pull Raul and Morientes off with a 1-0 lead. They should have kept attacking Ireland, rather than let Ireland resurrect themselves. Oh well...they escaped with the win, but numerous problems at the back.

Still...VAMOS ESPANA!!!! Commiserations Ireland. :D

Actually, he was injured, not redcarded - and Camacho, being the brilliant tactician that he is, had already used all three of his replacements to shore up their defence.

Still, they're through - I don't have to eat some of Donut's humble pie just yet. :D

so far there seems to have been an awful lot of luck in these matches. Too many victories because other team botched something

Nay, not luck, but an embrace of opportunity and exploitation of the opponents' follies.

Sorry - the TV-commentator over here said that he'd been sent off - and i just thought I'd missed it (I was swithing between the match and the Le Mans 24-hour rase)

Just goes to show - You shouldn't believe everything to hear ;)

Hayashi 06-16-2002 08:55 PM

What a pity. Ireland played magnificently, especially in the 2nd half. You would've thought that Spain were the minnows the way Ireland just piled on the pressure.
Spain had *2* goals disallowed due to offside.
The first penalty awarded to Ireland looked a bit dubious to me. Could have been a late tackle coupled with diving. But the 2nd penalty (where Robbie Keane scored [is he relate to Roy Keane?]) was a right decision - the Spanish captain almost ripped off Quinn's jersey, he held on that tight.

The Irish bow out of the tournament, but I think they did quite well.

Yorick 06-16-2002 09:23 PM

I agree, Ireland played sensational football. Duff in particular.

All this without the best player in Ireland Roy Keane too.

Kakero 06-16-2002 11:52 PM

Ireland could have won if not for that stupid first penalty save.

Could've, would've, should've...such is the story of this amazing World Cup. ;)

Hayashi 06-17-2002 02:12 AM

The US - Mexico match kicks off in about 30 mins time.

I hope the US wins, but my head tells me that Mexico will go through to the quarter finals.

Dundee Slaytern 06-17-2002 02:21 AM

I want Mexico to win, if only because I want an England-Mexico final.

Ar-Cunin 06-17-2002 02:39 AM

USA will have to change the trend if they want to go through

Good play against Portugal
'Medium' play against South Korea
Bad play against Poland

And it looks like they will - first attack => first goal

USA 1 - Mexico 0

Lanthir 06-17-2002 02:43 AM

U S A U S A

johnny 06-17-2002 03:02 AM

Well i'll be damned, the Americans are doing it again ! :D :D

Lanthir 06-17-2002 03:18 AM

half U S A 1 Mex 0

johnny 06-17-2002 03:29 AM

Hi Lanthir, did you here those folks in the stands ? A group of people is making the same noise as they do with the Atlanta Braves when they are doing that tomahawk chop thing. :D

Scholarcs 06-17-2002 03:41 AM

Still 1-0 to the USA at 53mins, and thats the 4th yellow card they've got!

Ar-Cunin 06-17-2002 03:44 AM

Mexico was just cheated out of a penalty

a clear handball in the penalty-area - the USA player knocked the ball away
