Sir ReGiN 06-14-2002 05:51 AM

Last night at about 11 pm I came home from a four day vacation in the swedish archipelago with some friends.
I was feeling pretty exhausted after alot of sun and not much sleep so I went to bed quite early, about 12 pm and fell asleep almost immiediatly. So far so good.
But here's when it gets freaky, a few hours later I wake up finding my room-mate asking me what the hell I'm doing and behind him is a big hole in the wall.
It turned out that I had gone up in the middle of the night, and had kicked big holes in the wall until my room-mate had opened the door to my room and had woken me up.
Now the thing is I remember dreaming about being locked in a room underground and how I couldn't get out, so I figure I thought I had to kick the wall down to get out.
Now I'm really having some major troubles with this as I don't really know how to handle it. I mean, who knows what I might do while asleep!
Does anyone have an tips as to prevent sleepwalking? 'Cause I really don't want this to happen again.

PS. Let me just add that the wall in question was between the bathroom and my room, and was basically just made of cardboard, just so you guys don't think I'm some kind of superman ;)

Ironworks has been offline regularly this week. Maybe you are just trying at the times when it is down!!??

Daniel_M 06-14-2002 06:48 AM

Err, why did my post change name, and why isnt my question there, very freaky indeed....

And this has what, to do with kicking holes in walls while you're meant to be sleeping peacefully? ;)

Sorry Regin, apart from cutting down on your inhalation of a certain type of plant (sacrilige I know ) I can't think of anything. If you are truly worried I'd prolly suggest a doctor that specializes in sleep problems

Sir ReGiN 06-14-2002 06:56 AM

Geez, I hate it when this happens..
Sorry Daniel_M, I have no idea what happened to your thread :/

I used to sleepwalk when I was a kid. Its some freaky crap. My parents say I used to get up at night, open the front door, and when they asked me what I was doing I would say "nothing" and go back to bed...and not remember any of it in the morning. If you lock yourself in your room you will eventually stop since you will usually wake up staring at the door and go back to bed.

I had similar experiences as a kid. Except when Mum and Dad asked me what i was doing when I went out the front door I'd say "No no, it wasn't me. It was that bloke over there. he did it." Which was wierd since I was only 6 or 7 and I never spoke like that normally. My Mum is a superstitious sort and explained it with the whole past life experiences thing. My Dad is more skeptical though and said it must've been something I saw on TV. I'd have to side with my Dad on this one as I really can't rmember much else about it.

And Sir Regin I'm sorry but I can't offer much advice other than get your roommates to watch out for you and help you out if you ever end up kicking up a ruckus in the night again. Sleepwalking can become a big problem, but most of the time it just phases out.
Don't worry too much, the more you think about it the more it'll probably manifest itself in your subconscious. Or maybe thinking about it will get it out of your subconscious... Not sure which. I'm not helping am I?

Neb 06-14-2002 07:29 AM

With enough duct tape, you can solve ANY problem ;) Of course, removing it again in the morning might be a bit painful.....

Rikard_OHF 06-14-2002 07:45 AM

Neb's actually got a point here
If you can't move, You Won't move

Then again
There are better alternatives to Duct tape...

Sir ReGiN 06-14-2002 07:49 AM

Hey thanks for the answers guys, but I'm not sure if I wanna spend the rest of my nights tied to the bed ;)
Sigh, I guess I'm just gonna have to hope this won't happen again

I agree - just get your gf to tie you up in bed every night, Regin ;)
You'll be too tired to sleepwalk :D

Nah, seriously though - I can imagine that's pretty scary! Most people do grow out of sleepwalking, but if you notice you keep on doing it (ask your roommates to check up on it), maybe you could get your doctor to direct you to a specialist. Sleepwalking an sich is not too bad, but if you start kicking down all the walls in your house it's a different story.... :D

Heh, I'm actually quite tempted to try the first suggestion
But in the meantime I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it happens again.

Cerek the Barbaric 06-14-2002 09:29 AM

I would imagine this was a one-time thing brought about by your physical exhaustion.

Has anything like this happened before? If not, I would say the stress of the trip brought it on.

I agree you should just wait to see if it happens again. Hopefully it won't.

In the meantime, I would still have your gf tie you in bed - Just To Be Safe!

Deathcow 06-14-2002 09:45 AM

lol! even though theres a hole in your wall, its pretty funny

i wouldnt worry about it unless you sleepwalk again, though

Sir Kenyth 06-14-2002 01:54 PM

Did it as a child myself, only I remember quite a few of the instances. There's a part of the brain that cut's off your motor nerves in the base while you're in deep sleep (REM). Sometimes, for unknown reasons, this part doesn't function properly and can result in two unnerving situations.

1. Sleepwalking. People with bad sleepwalking have been known to do very dangerous things. Including trying to kill family members.

2. Waking paralysis. When you wake up, you're awake but can't move from the neck down or can only move minimally. This is quite rare as a clinical disorder. If it happens to a normal person because of being woken from a deep sleep, it usually only lasts a matter of a few seconds.

I've known plenty of sleepwalkers, but only met one person with the paralysis problem. Even then, she had only experienced it a couple of times in her life.

I sleepwalk occasionally, which annoys my dear wife no end. I notice that it's when I am very tired when I went to bed. Probably interferes with REM sleep.

the new JR Jansen 06-14-2002 02:24 PM

Only thing i can suggests is not having an open window in your room, especially when it's on the second floor or something. Otherwise it could make for a rude awakening.
Oh and tell your friends if they catch you again not to yell your name. I've heard some disturbing things when people sleepwalk and someone yells their name. Even if this isn't true, it's better to be safe then sorry.

MILAMBER 06-14-2002 05:41 PM

Sorry, no help here Regin but I do have a great story. Years ago, my youngest brother Michael (I think he was 10 at the time) woke up in the middle of the night, walked downstairs and into the laundry room, opened the dryer and proceeded to urinate. He then closed the dryer walked upstairs and went back to bed. I was laughing so hard I was crying.
