ABC editing of "Jesus" Causes Controvery</a>

NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC says it edited the word "Jesus" out of a recent broadcast so viewers wouldn't be offended. For many, it had the opposite effect.

The bleeped Jesus on "The View" has drawn the ire of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, some conservative media watchdogs and even the women whose on-air conversation was altered.

"It is political correctness run amok," said Elizabeth Swasey, spokeswoman for the Media Research Center.

On the May 23 edition of "The View," Meredith Vieira noted that the daily weigh-ins of her dieting co-host, Joy Behar, had ended.

"Yes, and thank you, thank you, Jesus, is all I have to say," Behar replied.

Her words were aired live in much of the country, but when ABC broadcast a taped version of the show on the West Coast, "Jesus" was edited out.

ABC spokeswoman Julie Hoover said the use ran afoul of a pretty clear standard. The network has no problem with Jesus' name if it is used in a "prayerful and respectful manner," she said. (ABC's Peter Jennings anchored a highly rated news special, "The Search For Jesus," in July 2000.)

But ABC does not allow Jesus' name to be used in an exclamation.

"Under the circumstances, we were concerned it would be offensive to our audience," Hoover said.

Sheesh. That's terrible!!! What the heck are they thinking? [img]graemlins/confused5.gif[/img] I'm not religious at all but have never found anything wrong with the word Jesus. Maybe that's just cuz it takes alot to offend me. I must say tho' that I'm more frightened and offended by political correctness than anything that is usually said while ignoring it.

Utterly ridiculous! The only thing that usually gets bleeped on TV are curse words, so now Jesus is categorized along with profanity??

and abc wonders why their ratings are in the basement?

Um I think most of you and othres such as Farwell are missing the point it is not the Name Jesus they wre concerned about. They wre worried that the way it wsa used as an expletative ( in their minds) was what was bad and that it shoudl not be used that way. They wree afriad it would offend christians to hear it used that way. What happen though is Farwell needed an issue to get his name back in the lime light so her is tryigg to turn it around and make it look like they do not want any mention of Jesus.

i am a Christian and the sitch. can be looked at two ways.one as ABCs evilness or what her name useing His name in an offensive way towards Christians. Either way its sad.

Well considerign all the programing they do concerning Jesus and the bible I realy do not think they are being evil. I think they did it for the reason they stated.

Jesus (the name) is pronounced Hesus - so perhaps it doesn't count ;)

Well of course not. What are you thinking? Only people who love Jesus are hurt if his name is used as an exclamaition.
