I'm a Bard.

While you guys are doing the fighting, I'm either confusing the enemy; or singing an aggression inspiring, energy boosting, battlerage inducing, confidence lifting, spirit focussing, mind consolidating song.

MagiK 06-07-2002 10:17 AM

We trained in M16's, M14's M60's and Modle 54 12gauge shotguns so we wouldnt need to do the hand to hand thing ohhhh they did do a half hearted Tae Kwon Do class too And I liked what we covered in the Kendo classes :D

Reading Yoricks post, I guess Ill be the Ranged fire support for the troop :D

Combative Tai Chi

With Yoricks' inspiration and MagiKs' fire support, IW could field an impressive battalion...

Bokken 06-07-2002 11:21 AM

Kung Fu and a great deal of weaponry but mainly in sword and bo weapons for the last 15 years. My personal weapons are self made consisting of two double edged flexible 60cm blades in 50cm half inch round handles. Can't go wrong with them by your side but I guess today is a more civilized age (or so we think) so training is the only purpose they serve.

Cerek the Barbaric 06-07-2002 11:49 AM

I studied Gung Li Do for a couple of years.

It's a variant form of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do.

That was too many years ago, though. Now I practice Ta-Ching. It's similar to Magik's version, only with semi-automatic handguns. (pull the slide back and it goes "ta-ching") :D

Moni 06-07-2002 12:00 PM

Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Jiu Jitsu...but that was long ago and far away.
These days its Sitstill and Dolittle.

/)eathKiller 06-07-2002 12:04 PM

Jiu Jitsu, Ninjitsu, and Sumo... ...hey it's very much like Jiu Jitsu! I got 3rth Dan in that too

Mexican Street Fighting as a kid. http://www.theunholytrinity.org/crac...grinbandit.gif

As an adult, I did a bit of akido. Just got started, then I broke my back. Didn't get a lot of practice after that.

Elif Godson 06-07-2002 02:48 PM

Ni Dan in Taizan Ryu Jui Jitsu, did some Aikido which I think
I like better than Jui Jitsu but classes got way to expensive.
Kendo and Iai Jitsu. Tsien Chuan(Mang Chuan) Kung Fu where
i learned how to properly cut a pig in two (eww I know)
I have studied a few to many styles and stuck it out in a couple
of them. But now a day';s it seems like most schools are in it only
for the money and not the quality of what they are teaching. I
have a friend who signed her boy up for a karate class and
she pay's 75$ a month for 3 classes a week, then there are the testing fees for the multiple ranks inside each rank i.e. white w/yellow sripe x2 yellow w/orange stripe x2 etc.... Just seems a wee bit excessive to me. I used to teach for 25$ a month per student
with test per rank yellow, orange, green, blue, brown etc..
and if you failed I would refund half the difference mostly keeping it on retainer for the next try. Granted I taught out of a rec center
which was glad to have me there.

By the way, how is Krav Maga ? Ive heard good things about it.

Horatio 06-07-2002 02:55 PM

When I was 15 I lived in a REALLY tough neighbourhood, and me and my friends were getting mugged at least once a week. So we all went to the local lesiure centre and signed up for every martial arts course we could find. We went out into the Big Wide World and woe betide those that tried to stop us.
Because of my background, I learned basic street fighting early on, but the martial arts lessons REALLY helped.

Redblueflare 06-07-2002 02:55 PM

Karate but that was way way back. I want to take Ji jitsu though.

I, not by my choice, went to one of the most toughest warrior courses ever.
18 years worth of 2 older brothers. Thats where I learned some major "crazy moves" that stun an opponent quickly.
I was beat, ganged up on, broken, bloodied, and setup. All free form, cheap shottish, and pure in its raw state ..

I'm Like The Few, The Bard. While People Fight, I Just Express Myself... :D

A Wise Man Once Said, He Who Fights And Runs, Is Wasting Valuble Running Time With All That Fighting...

Talthyr Malkaviel 06-07-2002 03:55 PM

Hey Conan, smae here, except since my oldest brother didn't really do it much the other takes it upon himself to make up for it.
Umm, I don't really practice a martial art, but I know where to hit, and some of the dirty tricks you pick up. ;)
Well, actually, I don't do martial arts, but I can do some proper wrestling, closer to greco-roman style, not the type which some of you might have thought of when I said that word.

caleb 06-07-2002 09:05 PM

Im surprised no ones mentioned the most effective defence.....the 100-yard dash ;)

Wulfere 06-07-2002 09:10 PM

I tried being just plain mean, then some Karate, Tae Kwon Do.
In the service...hmmmm...M16A2 and 9mm. They don't teach self defense in EOD, but you learn every weapon system made and how to take it apart. You also learn how to make your own from scratch.
When I went to the Federal Officers Training School we were taught some Akido and Judo. As well as M14, Remington 840, .38 special and .30 carbine.
My personal favorite however, is ranged combat with things that make big BOOMS.

Ah the good old days when I was sneaking up on unexploded ordnance...sigh...er...exscuse me I have to go wipe my eyes...

LennonCook 06-08-2002 01:20 AM

I know the art of the eel.
The most effective (read: only) technique is to tilt back the head, open the mouth and excercise the vocal chords such that a piercing scream eminates... "eeeeeeellllll!!"

SomeGuy 06-08-2002 01:25 AM

I'm training my self in the art of hitting things with a pointy stick.

Gammit 06-08-2002 02:08 AM

I used to teach Judo, I fought for my college team with Tae Kwon Do, and I've been studying (on and off) modern Arneis recently.

Horatio, that picture is HILARIOUS!!!

lroyo 06-08-2002 02:13 AM

I did a couple of years of Judo when I was a kid, followed by 2 forms of Karate when I was in my teens. I didn't get extremely far with either of them, but they were enjoyable and good for discipline and fitness.
