(Sorry to the ToB ppl--I accidently posted this over there)

Why are female leads limited to the ultra-insecure and annoying Anomen for romantic involvement? Not that Jan or Keldorn or Minsc really do anything for me, mind you, but if you guys have three or four to choose from, then why don't we? Hmmm???

The Jabberwocky 05-25-2002 03:14 PM

Waaagh!!! I don't knoooow! ::wails:: (The first thing I ever posted on this board was the same complaint. :D ) We have to make some Mods or something. :D I personally think - and I repeat - that BlackIsle should make a CD with just characters in it, a CD with character interaction, some returning BGI NPCs, extra romance options, etc. ... But that'll never happen, so ... oh, well. :D

Memnoch 05-25-2002 03:15 PM

Short answer? Bio didn't have time to create more than one romance for women, so they went with Anomen. They predicted that the male:female customer ratio would be about 3:1, and guess what - they were wrong. They know better now. ;)

There's actually a bit of dialogue and scripting for a Valygar romance in BG2 already...that was in the pipeline, as was a Haer'Dalis romance. I heard that David Gaider, the senior designer on the BG2 team, was putting together a Valygar romance in his spare time, but I don't know where that's up to.

There is a third-party Solaufein Mod Pack available if you're not too fussed about going out with a drow. I haven't tested it, so it's take at your own risk - nobody seems to have had any problems with it, though. These modders seem to get better and better. There's also

Below is a description of it.

The Solaufein Romance Mod Pack adds the many optional components to BGII. You may install any or all of them, your choice. The mod pack includes work by Gebhard Blucher, Kensai Ryu, Xyx, Ishan, Beige Tangerine, Sarkyn, Spork.
Solaufein of Ust Natha becomes an NPC who can join your party.
He's a Chaotic (Good/Neutral) Drow fighter/mage.
He has "plenty" of dialogue.
He will banter twice with each other party member.
He will attempt to "romance" the PC regardless of race, gender or other loved ones. If you don't like it, just tell him to go away.
He can still Dimension Door (don't abuse it!).
He can be abducted by Bodhi (watch out!).
Three Solaufein-specific challenges (one requires ToB).
Two Solaufein-specific rewards.

Solaufien is a good mod. There's also a male sorceror mod (Kelsey, I believe his name is), that's supposed to be decent as well, and he can romance as well IIRC.

Loremage 05-25-2002 05:26 PM

It's obvious. There's much fewer female players, so they made less female romancses. I do think there should be more then one though.

Xero279 05-25-2002 07:51 PM

did the creators of BG think that maybe male chars play female chars if they get bored with male? hehe i dont but im sure some people do. theres nothign wrong with it

Charean 05-25-2002 08:27 PM

I posted the links in my thread - if you have been through BG2 at least once... I listed mods for NPC in there. :D

Jerr Conner 05-25-2002 11:20 PM

I didn't find the Anomen romance so bad...(I'm one of the guys who got bored with male characters so I created a few females)

However, Solaufein Mod is a good mod. His romance basically doesn't equal psychology, from how it's described.

The only problem with the Sol Mod would be the extra tactical encounters, but only if you install those. Those encounters are optional though. Plus, if you want something extremely challenging, they'll work out for you.

I haven't tried the Kelsey one, seeing as how I've uninstalled Baldur's Gate 2 for Icewind Dale...*Dodges the rotten fruit being hurled at him by people screaming "How could you!?"*

The Jabberwocky 05-26-2002 05:10 AM

I used to play mostly guy characters. The first game of BGII I played, my main character was male. I did NOT know ANYTHING about the romance options!!! I had Aerie in my party, and I was nice to her everytime she complained. And then, resting time came, when Aerie approached me with...

Aerie: I would like to show you my body, CHARNAME!

Me: ::SCREEEAAAMM::

The End. :D

Well done memnoch... you copy+paste skills are excellent ;) (Either that or you have a very good memory )

The Jabberwocky 05-26-2002 06:14 AM

There is nothing Memnoch doesn't know! Of course it was all from memory! :D :D :D

Helspanth 05-26-2002 09:30 AM

There is also a valygar romance on the works.

jcompton 05-30-2002 12:06 AM

Gaider is no longer working on the Valygar romance. Its writer, Silrana, had said she would do the technical implementation herself, but I haven't heard from her for a fair few weeks now.

eLLithid 05-30-2002 01:51 AM

The Jabberwocky, do i sense an aura of SUCKING UP? lol.. juss kiddin!
So the drow guy can romance with everyone nomater the gender...lol
that is really good for homosexualz!!!

PEACE

Garnet FalconDance 06-01-2002 04:48 PM

Maybe I'll give the drow and the sorceror a dl and try out. It's just really annoying that we only have one choice when the guys have several. ::pout:: I play male chars as well, but actually prefer to put the females in trad male roles--paladins, for instance. Maybe they were afraid a pally chick would be too threatening to a male npc ;) .

Lioness 06-01-2002 05:14 PM

Total agreement here Garnet. *proudly shows Anti-Anomen badge*

Does anyone besides me like Haer'Dalis? :D

ROTFLMAO!!! Well, it's true. I was too nice!! I had Aerie in my party the other day with a male main character, and she WHINES SO MUCH!!! AHHH!!! It makes me wonder how I tolerated it all and didn't start yelling at her after the first one or two dialogues...

Edit: Oh, BTW, my new male main character Tiax... his stats are identical to Tiax's (With a few points here and there), I even have his voice patch. ... Which is so WRONG if you think about it... Aerie hitting on a crazy evil gnome...

Well, with the addition of Kelsey and Solaufein, you now have as many options as male PCs had out of the box--3. Depending on how you look at this, the guys are still in the lead, with Aerie, Jaheira, Viconia as the originals, and Tashia, Arnel's Nalia, and Solaufein available to them through mods.

Wynne 06-01-2002 11:27 PM

Kelsey is actually a great mod. He squabbles with Anomen over the PC, much like Jaheira/Viconia/Aerie will do over a male PC, only I personally think the comments between the two men to have far more bite; they're hilarious! Particularly the part where Anomen says, "How much do you know of my Order of the Most Radiant Heart?" And Kelsey responds, "Let me guess, you founded it and sculpted the columns with a butter knife?" :D Priceless! They both get in good shots, though; don't take that as an indication the writer didn't make the mod balanced. He went to great lengths, and the results are gorgeous.

The coolest thing about Kelsey is probably the fact that he actually respects a female PC as leader! He calls her 'boss' and 'my favorite heroine' and such. True, he doesn't go for chicks with beards or tusks, but you can forgive him. He has some very nice dialogues. Give him a chance.

Like I keep saying, Kelsey was the best thing that ever happened to Anomen's reputation. I've actually had people chide Kelsey for the fact that Anomen accepts rejection (when the PC is forced to choose) better than Kelsey does. I swear, I can't win.
