Hi

Has anyone got any tips on how to get past theses big freaks!

Thanks
Kim

Dundee Slaytern 05-23-2002 02:29 PM

Cloud Kill, Death Spell, Death Fog, meaner summons, meaner tanks.

Confusion Prevention: Chaotic Commands, Potions of Clarity.

LOL, Dundee, the few-worded man strikes again... :D :p

Anyway, as Dundee has come with good 'tactics', all I can say is:
welcome to IW, Kim!

Xero279 05-23-2002 04:11 PM

all you need to do is have a cleric or druid cast hold person or monster on it (i forgot which works, i think its person) then just beat the crap out of them! i did nothing special and thats how i beat them. Just summon a wood nymph and she should hold then on her own or if your low on fighter hold then gasses with good ole' couldkill

Loremage 05-23-2002 08:29 PM

How about... Hit them with that big point stick. Honistly! Umber Hulks, they SUCK. I had alot more trouble then most with the game. But Umberhulks?

RocketPropelledGrenade 05-23-2002 09:52 PM

one of the first things you should do kim as soon as you get into chap 2, go and fight your way in the slave sewers. It is a bit of a tough fight, depending on your level of course. but once you get pass the kobolds, you will find that there are four pipes. there are various items in the sewers that you need to find and then place in the pipes. Check a walkthrough for items and order, if you need to
anyway as a result of all of this wonderful labor your doing, you get Lilacor, the +2 talking sword that protects against illithid and umberhulk. combined with the suggestions that other people have made the weilder should be fairly well protected. Enjoy!

Dundee Slaytern 05-24-2002 12:21 AM

Lilarcor is +3 enchanted.

"Murder, Death, Kill. Murder, Death, Kill. MuWahHAHAHAHA!"

Man, that sword cracks me up.

Lanthir 05-24-2002 02:01 AM

Are you talking about the one in Nalia's little castle? If so read the spolier

Spolier

in the courtyard are 4 dogs kill them and loot the peices of meat rom them. Then go to the kitchen and put them in the oven one at a time when the oven is full click on it again and you get doggy stew. Take this nice stew and give it to a thief who is hasten. then go back down to the basement to the room with the trolls in it now before you opne th edoor with the hummber hlks turn off AI and back you characters up away from the door. then have your thief go to stealthmode opne the door and run to the first door to the right he opens that door and leaves it opne and runs donw to the last door on his right at the end of the hallway just befor ethe left turn. he goes inside and put the doggy stew into the pile of bones then quickly go stealth again and hed out takign that left turn and following that halway to the door at the end o fit he opens and the shuts that door runs to the first door he ran to ( now on his left and shuts that. You cna then bring your party into that big room.. The umber hulks woudl ahve gone to go eat the stew and are now stuck behind those doors You get 17500Xp for doing this if i remember correctly.. This is what that retainer talked about that you met ealier about how he made the dog stew to feed them and all.

theifprowess 05-24-2002 07:05 AM

death spell is most effective cause it kills them all immediately and doesnt have the area affect on your partymembers like deathfog

Glorfindel 05-24-2002 07:18 AM

Not sure if anyone has said it yet... but Chaotic Commands does a good job at stoping their confusion attacks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but having trouble with the UmberHulks means being at a fairly low level, otherwise, if you have progressed further through the game, isn't it likely that you would have better equipment and spells to deal with the Hulks?

And what I'm actually trying to say is, isn't it unlikely to have chaotic commands AND having trouble with Umber Hulks, because otherwise they would not be such a problem? All my chars have a mindshield from enchanted weapons and I'm still in chapter 2 doing all the quests.

Dos Vidanya!!

Dundee Slaytern 05-24-2002 08:04 AM

Assuming everybody is level 7( highly unlikely, but let us assume), then simply use the simple tactic of "Divide and Conquer".

Let us face it, the AI is stupid. I mean no disrespect to the game, but it is true, the AI has limitations. Send one party member to lure one Umber Hulk and lure it far, far away from the rest of the Umber Hulks. Bring it to some desolate room and beat the living crap out of it with everybody. Note, the Umber Hulk always cast Confusion before it chases after you, so equipment like Lilarcor( which is easily obtainable) should be used by the bait.

Chromatic Orb is useful against Umber Hulks as well. Depending on your caster's level, you can either stun or outright kill the Umber Hulk.

question, what are all the items that people know of that protect against Mind Flayers/Umber Hulks. And i got an amulet off a dead mordikaine's sword that says it is a greenstone amulet, but it is constant not using charges, so i bought/found a few of these spell scrolls cause i figure in the mind flayer city in the underdark they might come in handy, but the only problem is i can't kill the damn swords to get the amulets, could someone give me some strategies on how to kill the damn things

Rimjaw 05-24-2002 12:42 PM

Chaotic Commands provides complete immunity against any mind tricks. The Greenstone Amulet/Mordenwhatever's sword thing is actually a bug in the game. And it doesn't completely protect you from Flayers. Just have a cleric memorise a few Chaotic Commands. Cast it on your fighters and let them do the rest.

Erm... has it ever occured to you to use the Mordenkenain Swords against the Mind Flayers instead? They rank among the top three summons to use against the Mind Flayers, along with Skeleton Warriors and Invisible Stalkers.

In any case, they can only be affected by magic damage IIRC. So use spells like Magic Missile/Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, or Death Spell/Death Fog if they are hostile.

kim_castles 05-24-2002 02:12 PM

hi again

Thanks everybody, I lured them away with the dog meat and went on to kill torgal so I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself now.

Cheers
Kim

Umber hulks can cause all sorts of problems for tanks soloing, because they have low THAC0s and TONS of hitpoints. When a tank gets surrounded by 4 or 5 of these, they die fast. You can try ranged weapons, too. But, by far, Cloudkill and Death Spell work the best. Use Cloudkill wands (recharged at any merchant for a price) because they're faster and (heehee) bypass the MR that several low-level creatures have.

With ToB, Deathblow works great on them, and many others. (vampires, golems, trolls, every person in the city of Athkatla, etc.)

Loremage 05-24-2002 06:21 PM

AS someone was saying you'ld have to be REALLY low level to have trouble with them. What level were you exactly?

kim_castles 05-25-2002 01:21 AM

I'm a level nine fighter, I picked up the talking sword but thought I might be better protected with the sword I got from Irenicus ginni. To be honest I'm totally new to RPG and don't really get the D&D rules yet and am just stumbling my way through the game.

Dundee Slaytern 05-25-2002 01:47 AM

Use Lilarcor, aka the Talking Sword. It will serve you far better.
