I'm concerned that this man is discussing with the FBI the best thing to do next. What advice should the FBI give him?

Given the fact that the girl passed herself off as 18+ (and he can prove it via chat logs of her and his computer) and if a reasonable person would believe that seeing her then I would say he did nothing wrong. Otherwise people would have to start carding their dates

What I find interesting is this bit here:
A senior British official said the case added urgency to legislation intended to outlaw cultivating sexual contacts over the Internet.

This is plain silly, depending on how broad they make it. No more internet dating services for the Brits!

Cloudbringer 07-15-2003 03:45 PM

I saw that story on BBC news yesterday. I didn't see a pic of the girl but supposedly she's only 12, so I find it hard to imagine she could look/sound 19.

If he did think (honestly) she was after meeting her, I wonder how he never caught sight of her passport which would indicate birthdate on it. She had to show it in several airports, didn't she?

I've know woman in there mid 20's that looked 12-14. My neice looked 19 when she was 13 (my jaw about dropped on the floor when I saw her.) And if he honestly did believe her way would be try and sneak a peek at her passport.

edit: actually if she had an EU passport and he had an American passport they would have gone through entirely different lines at customs.

Well, if he did nothing wrong, he might just as well return to the UK and explain it to the law overthere. I say this is a bit smelly, even if she "looked" like she was 18.

I agree that is does sound a little fishy but from personal experience (as noted in my previous post) it could have a very innocent explanation. My ex-wife look like a teenager (she was actually only 6 months younger then me). I used to get very dirty looks from some people when we would go out together sometimes. :(

But this is EXACTLY what the law is. Statutory rape is a STRICT LIABILITY crime. It does not matter if she lied to you, it does not matter if any reasonable person would believe she's 18. It's still statutory rape. And, you get to be labelled a sex crime offender forever. So, yes, when in doubt -- card you date. ;)

Then by all means do so! After all you have to show ID when buying alcohol even if you look like you're 21 (at least in "respectable" stores). I have never met a 12 year old girl that could pass for being 18-19. Perhaps they could have been able with their looks but not with their maturity and behavior. I find it very hard to believe. But then you believe what you want to. I believe that could explain a lot when it comes to this marine. ;)

As I said above, people believe what they want to. Or homines libenter id quod volunt credunt. Put her to the test and I bet things would have been different. ;)

Yeah, sent there by her step-father, who raped her when the whimsy hit him.

Animal 07-15-2003 06:39 PM

So when he found out she was only 12, why not turn around and walk the other way? The article indicates that they both dissappeared together. If it were me, I would be phoning her parents and shipping her back alone.

If it looks like a rat, smells like a rat, and sounds like a rat...

It's still for a court to decide and he's innocent until prooven guilty.

The Hunter of Jahanna 07-15-2003 07:45 PM

I think we should cut this guy some slack. Maybe the girl in question sent him some pics where she didnt look 12. Maybe she misrepresented her age, living situation and just about everything else about herself to this poor guy. I also have to ask, WHERE WERE HER PARENTS?!?!?!?! When I was 12, a snoball had a better chance in hell, than I had of laying my hands on my passport. Also, if they crossed any borders why didnt any pasport checkers stop the girl?? Is it a common thing in Europe for 12 yr olds to go to other countries without their parents?? Better yet is it a common thing for 12 yr old to travel without their parents , but with a man from another country?? This guy may or may not deserve to go to jail, but either way , I think that there should be a few other heads on the chopping block ahead of him.

</font>
Agreed it's possible that he was fooled. But looking at the photo of the spotty faced child that has been released he shouldn't have been fooled for long. They would pass through the same line at Heathrow but on arrival at Paris she would probably be waved through.

Of course he has twice been investigated by police in the US for alleged improper behaviour with children. He was arrested but charges were dropped.

Where is she now?

Once again we have the defence of the indefencible. It's everyone's fault apart from his.

khazadman 07-15-2003 08:13 PM

Right about now I'm sure this guy is wishing he'd kept is ass at home. If they catch him, they should send him back to the UK and let them decide what they want to do with him.

I never said it wasnt his fault. Just that it wasnt ONLY his fault. I dont know enough of the story to jump to a conclusion yet.

Apperntly she asked her Mother for her passport last week so she could get a pass to get her half price fares on the buses. Devious eh?

Anyway back to the poll. What juristiction does the FBI have in the UK and France?

The new legislation specifically relates to adults arranging to meet children and the 'grooming' of children on the internet for sexual purposes.

Latest update. He phoned his family, he's mad that she lied about her age and they are no longer together. She phoned her family, they are still together.

He has a piece of paper from her stating she 'has not been harmed'. Interesting wording!

Chewbacca 07-16-2003 05:01 AM

He should have turned himself in at the nearest police station by now, long ago actually. Screw the FBI, he is in France, so he should have gone to the nearest French police station with the kid. Something ain't right.

Either the kid and him did indeed split and she is being a foolish runaway and he is scared to report to the local authorities or something is afoul. I have a bad feeling about this, but that could be the dinner not settling well.

Donut 07-16-2003 09:13 AM

He's been arrested in Frankfurt in Germany, unconfirmed reports are that the authorities know where she is.

Moiraine 07-16-2003 09:42 AM

I don't seem to be able to think properly on that case. All that I can think about is, I have a son that just turned 12, and I can't imagine him dating aynyone that young ... :uhoh:

EDIT : Bugger. I meant, my son being that young.

What to do :

Get yourself a starving Pit Bull, slather his todger in tomato sauce, slap it between two hunks of bread and yell "Here Fido".

A bit extreme perhaps - OK - the Pit Bull should be on a chain that pulls him up inches short. That would scare the bejesus out of him at least ;)

khazadman 07-16-2003 10:16 AM

And now here's the kicker: in '98 Studabaker was accused of two, count 'em, two, counts of sexual misconduct against children under the age of 13. But they say they didn't have enough evidence to take it to trial. So I say let the UK do with him what they will. Unfortunately it'll not be a long enough sentence. this sicko needs to be put away forever. Foooreeeveeer!

I'm almost certain he will need to be charged first and then possibly a trial before the case is closed. Unless we can incarcerate him on the Isle of Wight! :D

BTW - respek to the FBI & the German police.

Bad idea Davros:

Tomato sauce sometimes upsets dogs tummies.

You know the guy was smart enough to get out of the last two instances that he was caught at; how many have not been reported? BTW - It was reported that the girl DID look at least 19.

You sure? I thought there was, and it applied to girls of 12 and under.

And yeah, i *have* known girls of 12 that could pass for 18. It seems to be a peculiarly British skill - our girls are good at wanting to be (and looking like) adults before they've even passed through the teenager stage.

Still, judging by the pics I've seen of her, she does *not* look 18+. Hell, not even 16+, so I think he would have been justified in carding her. Her looks would make me doubt her adulthood, and a good rule is - when in doubt, don't! ;)
