Internet users shall no longer be forced to spend time (and money) downloading and opening junk-mail. In the future the consumer must have asked to recieve e-mails, before a firm may send them to the consumer.

The EU-Commision and Europe-Parlaiment have agreed on this in a new EU-direktiv on data-securiety. All that there is needed now is approval from the 15 member contries before it can be finally approved, but all 15 have given their promise that it will be implemented.

Firms will also have to have permision to use cookies to store personal information about people that use their web-sites.

This looks to be a good day :D

Only problem is the free email services, such as hotmail and yahoo... in these cases, "the consumer" would be the email provider; not the account holder.

It sure does

No more European junkmail. But I bet there'll still be a lot coming in from the US...

caleb 05-31-2002 03:42 AM

Not to mention Hotmail and Yahoo are based in America...

Any word on how they will prosecute offenders? Will the EU be able to extradite offenders from other countries with no such laws? The problem with making laws about net stuff is that no single nation or group of nations controls it.

Who the hell is the EU to decide what goes tho ppl's emails? Who gave *them* the right to impose their will on the rest of the world? in this case I actually agree with them, But I oppose them out of principle, purely because I feel that no single governemet, country or orginaiztion should have the right to impose their will upon others!

caleb 06-01-2002 10:13 AM

Because its the same as someone shoving a bunch of fetish magazines you didnt subscribe to in your mailbox.

Calaethis Dragonsbane 06-01-2002 10:21 AM

True but I was looking at the bigger picture; not this specific topic; after all, if they do this, what will they do next?

caleb 06-01-2002 10:23 AM

Get rid of fetish magazines being stuffed in your mailbox

Calaethis Dragonsbane 06-01-2002 10:29 AM

hahaha yeah i suppose; but waht about ppl who arnt part of the EU, them too? I dont like other ppl dictating how I ought to live my life, nor do I like junk mail, but when the choice is taken away what else is left?...think about that for a few moments, ;)

The EU decided on behalf of the comsumer that have to use download-time (and therefore their own money) to read a lot of unwanted commericials.

Calaethis Dragonsbane 06-01-2002 10:41 AM

Thats *not* the point I was making; what I was saying was who gave the EU the right to decide 'whats best' for the rest of the world.

caleb 06-01-2002 11:39 AM

Its NOT the rest of the world. Just countrys that are in the EU. Assuming the governments do the will of the people then europeans want this ;) If not then take up a picket sign and some friends.
