Last night I went to one of my universitys various May balls, and had a fantastic time. The result this morning is not good; lets just say I'm not feeling at my peak (small understatement). Anyway, could people post their hangover cures, I am willing to try almost anything.

Ps please don't shine any bright lights, or make any loud noises in this thread, thankyou.

Epona 04-27-2002 06:30 AM

er.... More Beer??? :D :D

Staralfur 04-27-2002 06:33 AM

Predicted result of more beer ->

LennonCook 04-27-2002 06:33 AM

Cold Showers are said to help, as is Black Coffee... water can also be good.
Although having no experience with such a situation, I cant verify the legitimacy of these cures. :D

Epona 04-27-2002 06:57 AM

On a more serious note, I am an old hand at this (it's no secret that I like my beer lol!)

DO NOT drink coffee - the main thing you feel during a hangover is dehydration - that's what causes the headache. Coffee dehydrates you further, and what you need to do is rehydrate. Drink lots of water. Sometimes fizzy drinks can, for some reason I find, be a bit of a miracle cure - I usually find cold coke or sprite with lots of ice does the trick - but you need to drink a lot of fluids.

Also hangover prevention - eat before you start drinking, and when you get home drink at least a pint of water if you can do so without puking. If you wake up in the night (you're gonna if you drank a pint of water before going to bed lol) then have more water.

Take it from me, I'm a pro - although after Phil McCavity and SomeGuy's 'What the heck is going on' thread, I don't think anyone's gonna take me seriously any more :(

Fresh orange juice is great for a hangover. Also a big fry-up really does it for me.

Jorath Calar 04-27-2002 09:36 AM

Lie in bed, watch tv... Works for me

Black Knight 04-27-2002 09:37 AM

Eat/Drink whatever sounds good to you - but Epona's right - you are mostly dehydrated - Gatorade/Poweraid or some sports drink works for me...

BTW - that was not at all the thread content I thought I was gonna get from yer title...

Sage advice Epona - both here and on that other thread ;) . Drinking the water just before you collapse in your bed the night before - that's the real key. As it's already happened - go the fry up (I wanna find out if it stays down :D ).

johnny 04-27-2002 09:55 AM

drink a beer, just one. This may sound weird, but it always works for me

Talthyr Malkaviel 04-27-2002 10:24 AM

Ugh... I hope you were joking about the big fry up Arledrian, at least not with too much butter on (and this is from a recent experience.)
Water's really good, especially since there's no point drinking something which actually has much tase to it, because almost anything that does tastes absolutely disgusting the morning after.

I certainly wasn't joking, my friend ;)

Seriously, that's generally the only time I eat greasy/fatty food, I don't like it all that much normally, but there truly is nothing better than sausage, egg and beans when you wake up with a hangover.

Give it a try

Epona 04-27-2002 10:27 AM

Actually I agree with those that suggest the fry-up. Done it many a time myself and it does help a lot.

One thought occurs to me, will I still be doing this when I'm 80? Or does there come a point when you think 'enough is enough' and quit with the drunken nights out? Actually, if I ever feel like quitting having fun, just take me out back and shoot me...

I have to agree with this, and with Epona.

Drink tons of water. I also drink OJ. Some folks like sodas (Sprite or cola, like Epona mentioned.)

But, a big fry-up will work, usually.

In Mexico, they use a lot of Topo-Chico, a brand of carbonated mineral waters, with different flavors. THESE WORK GREAT for a hangover.

and the surprise cure for a hangover, used throughout a country known for parying (and about to have another Cinco de Mayo blowout) is MENUDO!

Yup, this greasy, tasty soup made with various ingredients is a sure bet to cure a hang-over!

On a sad note, :( I had to quit drinking after the diagnosis of diabetes. Mixing it with my medication would put me in a come.

Rudy, that's terrible! :( I'm sorry to hear about the diabetes. I understand about the drinking, though, because I had to pretty much give it up when I had Pancreatitis/gallstones. Now I just have a little sip at parties now and again (like a 1/2 glass of champagne at New Years). Now that I have my gallbladder out, I don't really have to worry anymore, but I'm still cautious.

who says you have to drink to have fun.i gave it up when i got tired of all the empty spaces in my memory.
and yes,you must rehydrate.so drink water before you go to sleep.

Grind a dried up lizard to a pulp, mix it with a raw egg in about a teaspoon of brandy and drink up. If its a real bad hangover replace the dry lizard with a freeze-dreid scorpion... preferably madagascarian...

Ryanamur 04-27-2002 01:02 PM

Since "hangover" is caused by dehydratation, the solution actually work it's best when taken before you go to be:

Take one 8oz glass of water for each ounce of Alcohol you drank.

So, if you drank 25oz of Rum, you drink 25 glasses of water

1 beer = 1 oz of hard stuff
1 glass or wine or spirit = 1 oz of hard stuff.

Also, depending on what you drink the night before, you might want to be carefull as to what you drink the next morning.

If you had mixes with O.J. stay away from O.J.
Rum and Cokes... stay away from coke...

The only exception: Beer, you can have another one in the morning, it helps.

Staralfur 04-27-2002 06:23 PM

I normally try to drink at least a pint of water before I get to bed, unfortunately last night I was so tired I went to bed as soon as I got home. Also, I was mixing drinks all night (beer, wine and spirits), my fault, but a lot was included in the ticket.

BTW Dehydration isn't the only part of a hangover; excessive drinking lowers your blood sugar level (as well as many vitamins), so eating/drinking something sweet helps. Also, your the sodium/potassium pumps in your nerves get unbalanced, which doesn't help either. Bananas are ideal for solving both of these, however, actually eating one when you feel that rough is another matter.

If I'm really bad (ala this morning) the cure I normally use goes something along the lines of; water/squash followed by a glass of milk (helps settle my stomach). Then a couple of slices of toast with loads of honey on it, followed by more water and finally a nice cup of tea :D . This generally gets me to the 'managing a fry-up stage' (or at least a bacon sandwich) within an hour or so.

Another alternative is a Prairie oyster, which consists of a raw egg (with yoke unbroken), a dash of Worchester sauce with a sprinkling of salt and pepper. I get the feeling that if you can actually drink this, you attention is taken away from the hangover, though I've never tried it (and only know 3 people that have).

Yeah, milks supposed to be really good, also it's a good idea to drink some milk before you go drinking because it lines your stomach, and of course you don't want to drink on an empty stomach because food partially absorbs the alcohol, making you not feel so bad later.

Thanks for the indepth analysis of Hangovers, I didn't know all that. However, I know that my Blood sugars don't drop that much. In fact, they tend to go up (my wife is a Type 1 Diabetic) so we test mine once in a while

You actually scared me when you started talking about prairie oysters... where I live, they are little bulls (caft s/p) balls which are fried once the bull is castrated... euk!

Well, I got my drinking days over with in college, don't do much now and rarely to the point of being falling down drunk and getting a hangover. I think it's been almost 10 yrs since I've done that. Guess you do 'grow out of it', Epona! ;) I remember orange juice and water helped. These days I don't need 'remedies' since getting 'tipsy' on anything but wine doesn't tend to give me any probmlems the next day.

Rikard_OHF 04-28-2002 06:37 AM

I am in those days now, so I guess I have some sort of an excuse. :D

LOL Ryanamur, I can see those being an addition to the 'classic fry up', infact I get the feeling they would make things worse.

BTW another tip I've up; in general the darker the drink the worse it is for hangovers - so vodka is much better than, say whisky.

Katherine 04-28-2002 07:58 AM

lol- your hangover can't be that bad- look at all these posts you're making!

When I read the topic title, I was hoping for some juicier content, to be honest. Could you make up some sordid details of the night before? Please?

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the topic was: RU486, the morning after pill.

MILAMBER 04-28-2002 08:40 AM

Welcome to my life!

Eat some bread, drink some water, pop an asprin, then have a couple more beers. Swear to God it will help. Especially the having a couple more beers part. I know they might seem like the last thing in the world you want, but they really do help.

I'm drunk as hell right now and I'm going to be right there with you tomorrow. Hell, I can't even type now.

BTW, I thought by the topic of the post you meant you woke up next to somebody who was only attractive when wearing beer gogles. Consider yourself fortunate that's not the case. When you wake up under those circumstances AND you feel like you described it's infinately worse.

LOL, well, I'm sure that seeing one of those Farmer Prairie Oyster, let alone eat it, would cure any hangover.
