I read an article that there is a fake meat being sold in Europe. This product is made out of fungus. As far as the nutrition it's about the same on the plus and negitive side. The US FDA has approved the sale of this product here in the US.
I'm willing to bet in 5 years one of those pointy headed "scientist" will determine that if you eat his product all your children will be born naked. |

OMG, I have tears of laughter streaming down my face! It's called Quorn, it's perfectly OK - I'm a veggie and I've been eating it for years! It's nice, absorbs the flavour of whatever sauce you cook it in. Heck, mushrooms are fungus you know, it's just a type of mushroom. The only problem is it's not OK for vegans because it's fed with egg protein. |
I've never heard of this before, but it actually sounds GREAT to me!
During the course of my diet (I've lost 70+ lbs so far with only about 20lbs to go), I've learned to love soy burgers! They remind me of the burgers from my school days. Other bean for meat substitutes fall short because, while they aren't bad overall, they taste like beans not burgers. This new product has me excited! |

If quorn tastes of anything, it is a bit similar to a very mild mushroom flavour. It might not be called quorn in the US, that's a brand name, because it's patented. And sounds like a great diet! Good on ya! [ 03-04-2002: Message edited by: Epona ]
|
Sorry to take you up on this Epona ;)
But this fake meat tastes exactly like what it is...a fungus substitute Having grown up in a vegetarian household I was put off being a vegan or vegetarian at a young age and now cannot go a meal without some kind of meat. It just aint the same |
Anyone have any data/statistics on food allergies associated with mycoprotein? I had a chemistry professor who suffered from multiple food allergies and had to have a very strict diet. Just wondering....

People come on!!
What is this world coming to? People eating fungus and soy instead of meat?? You got to eat meat, it's the natural thing to do. And it's so darn good! Please...support my cause here. :D Beef...it's what's for dinner |

I, personally, enjoy eating meat as well as soy products (soy milk is reasonably good if served cold and tofu must not be overcooked). My interest in quorn/mycoprotein is purely informational: nutritional content, any allergy complications, cost, etc. Try soy products and then you can enjoy the best of both worlds! :D |

*sigh* And yet again I can't say I'm veggie without a whole bunch of people taking me up on it. I'm not telling you what to eat, I merely expressed a liking for quorn - quit telling me what I should eat.

I was merely giving my opinion on the subject of the thread. Mainly that I think the substitute tastes like crap. |

If it's anything like soy then BEGONE evil fiend!!!
What heinious crime in their past lives are people who eat soymeat trying to make up for? |
Jorath, I'm not so keen on soya mince, simply because it has a very strong taste - that's why I prefer quorn, because you can coat it in whatever sauce you want and it just absorbs the sauce.
Strangely enough though, I find soya milk OK. |
Well I havn't tried Soy milk but my dad decided to be a gourmet chef and cut down the food cost one day and made a bolognese (mince and spaghetti with an okey sauce and pretty good if you use real meat) with soy meat I think I have never tasted anything worse... Id rather drink Orange juice after brushing my teeth than eat that again....
|
Quorn is very nice, it tastes really good, and I find it a good subsitute for the burgers and pizza I usually live off :D
|
Never tasted soya or quorn - but then I'm French, here food substitutes are a sort of religious blasphemy ... :D
|
Yes but the big question is does quorn increase/improve the texture and firmness of a bowel movement?
|
There's always one  :D

I don't seem to be able to post the whole thing up in one go so I'll post it up seperately ~grynz~ You've blatantly not had much exposure to real chinese food! Practically everything contains soya sauce! Breakfast usually consists of you tiao (kinda like the french eat croissants at breakfast) and soya milk (not the supermarket stuff you get in europe or U.S.A though I like that stuff too) the real stuff made from soya bean powder, lush! ~lix lips~ |

quote:
Originally posted by Ronn_Bman:

Then of course there's dou fu (better known as tofu) which is amazing when cooked properly with the correct seasoning! Great with fish or in soup! There's also a kind of tofu "skin" which I adore and can be made into all kinds of dim sum, delicacies *droolz thinking about all this food* The best would have to be stir fried fresh green soya beans! Gorgeous! They're the only vegetable I can eat a whole plateful of without feeling sick! Then of course there are all the other soya bean derivatives you get as snacks in China like "dou fu gan" which is basically seriously compressed tofu with soya sauce seasoning and is also exceptionally yummy! |

I think it's just a chinese culture thing. And it must be healthy! Isn't there a statistic somewhere that states that fewer women in china get breast cancer than in europe or america? But that chinese women in europe or U.S.A. have the same chances of getting breast cancer as european or american women? I think it's basically the diet. It's so much easier to be healthy and still eat tons of delicious food in china! There is a great variety of vegetables. Not to mention the great amount of time the Chinese seem to spend studying food :D I know because whenever I go back to China, I can eat twice as much food as I eat here (which is no mean feat) and STILL lose fat! The only bad side is the mosquitoes by the rivers ~grumbles~ |

heehee... I'll stop talking about how wonderful Chinese food is now. Not that I'm biased or anything ;) It's sad but most of the "chinese food" you get in europe and america isn't really chinese food. It's all been slightly altered to take less time to cook and to suit the western style more. It's westernised chinese food. |
