OK, I know there is a post about this already (ie the Ohno post), but I couldn't bring myself to post there. Just had to shout it from the tree tops - the topic just deserved a better headline didn't it :D .

Australia's first ever winter olympic gold medal - what a SHOCK!!!. Just heard his interview - "There were 3 or 4 better skaters out there than me. It's a rough and tumble sport - getting to the final was my victory. To do that I had to skate from the front and go for it. My strategy in the final was to stay upright, and hope for a bronze in the event of a crash. I still don't know what to think about it all".

HG and Roy will have an absolute field day tonight - that is hgoing to be a must see episode :D :D :D .

LC will no doubt be along shortly, so prepare for an AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE

Um, oh, the UK gold medal tally still seems to be... BLOT - a quick recount..ZIP - latest update... BUGGER ALL. Does it get any better than this :D .

Too right Hugh - now we just need a certain breakfast munchable (or his brother)to come forth and add to the conversation. Maybe he is in mourning after the pitiful effort by his cricket side against the Kiwi's. Still 89 wasn't too bad - they beat their worst ever 1 day score by 3 runs :D .

You better save that page for posterity Staraflur :D - I don't know how you fixed the rankings, but fortunately there are sane thinking people in the southern hemisphere who would struggle to believe your evidence.

Sorry if I'm invading the Aussie party...but I bring good tidings and congratulations!! I just read the story on Bradbury and the bad luck and injuries he has had over the years (life threatening, nonetheless!). Sounds like his medal is well-deserved, and that is even an added bonus with it being Australia's first winter Olympic gold!

Wanted to share this humorous tidbit out of a story I read:

Bradbury is part-owner of a company that manufactures speed skating boots, including those worn by Ohno. He e-mailed the American on Friday, asking Ohno if he won a medal to mention the company’s name.
“I guess I don’t need him to do that now,” Bradbury said.

LOL, how's that for irony? Speed skating is unpredictible, but that makes it all the more fun to watch.

Again, Congratulations!

The Assuies have a gold!! How cute!! ;)

It's not bad for a nation of beaches and desert with a population numbering less than ten percent of the US to win a medal at the WINTER OLYMPICS! Especially since our siblings (70 million of them) in that rainy cold island on the other side of the world, hasn't done so yet :D

Last count I checked Norway (4 million people) was on top of the gold medal tally with 7 Gold, followed by Germany (5) Russia (4) and the USA (3).

That means a nation of 280 Americans, most of whom have grown up with waaay more snow/ice exposure than the 20 million Aussies, have only 2 Gold medals more!!!

We all know it's about Gold medals. (That's what Aussie tallys have always been based on) Silver schmilver. Winning isn't everything. It's the only thing :D :D :D

Don't get me wrong GR, I wish yours, or any country every success at these games (well with the possible exception of the UK - that would give Donut the upper hand and we can't have that can we). The fact that your team has 16 medals is interesting, but is really rather irrelevant to the topic. Well done for you, but WE HAVE A GOLD!!!!! This isn't like the Olympic swimming pool, where our 2 nations are now so clearly the competing super powers. This is about some poor guy who was in the world top ten through the past 2 Olympics and (I believe) 10 world championships. This is about the guy who if anything good looked like happening managed to crash out or get injured in training. This is about an ASTONISHING run of luck that got him through the quarters, semis and finals and gifted him with a most unlikely gold medal.

You GR can celebrate your 16 or 18 and the many more to come. I will still celebrate the one that means most to me.

Lanesra 02-17-2002 06:08 PM

I think if the two blokeys from the curling had done their sweepy thing in front of the guy in second place he would have still won the gold I must say the long shot of the others trying to get up was hillarious reminded me of Donut and myself coming home after Botham won the ashes...SLIDE CHARLIE BROWN SLIDE :D

Grand-Ranger 02-18-2002 01:23 AM

Yes i know its irrelavant, and pretty good numbers there Yorrick.

But there off a little. Not everyon here is around ice. Alot of the southern states arent. And alot of south westeren states arent. Only New England and the Northwesnt, and Midwest.

I dont know why I put 16 and 18, it seems like I have heard those somwhere, hmm.

Oh yeah, what is curling? I tryed watching it and didnt under stand a thing they wear doing...

Well sure, but when you consider that the population of greater metropolitan New York/New Jersey Cities is 20 million - the same as the entire population of Australia, you get a clearer picture. The Northeast is very heavily populated.

Scholarcs 02-18-2002 03:20 AM

*sigh* has NZ not won anything? *sigh*

Oh well, you cant blame us. Most of us have never seen ice or snow.

Ah, who cares about how much the US or anyone else win (even though I'm American by birth I'm sticking with the underdogs here), as long as we've got more than the Poms (who are CLOSER to Europe and the Alps I might add). :D

Quite incredible that Australia, with a population of 18 million, do so @#$% well at sport, be it individual or team sports played by the rest of the world. Don't knock us for our two golds, we're ahead of Austria on the medal tally, and it doesn't even snow here (except up in the mountains). :D

We just got a SECOND ONE, by Alisa Camplin (below). Isn't she gorgeous!! I'm so happy for her.

True Campinio - no mountains.... but from memory you don't have many medals from the mountains. On the other hand, it is not unknown for the Netherlands to have a little ICE now and then is it :D . That might be more the link to your medals success ;) .

Nice piccies Memsie - she's a real cutie isn't she.
