THREE TIMES NOW, he is playing on my bed with a 'fruit box' straw, and the straw fell off the bed, and he went down, found it, and put it in his mouth and jumped back up on the bed, and dropped it on the bed, and continued playing!! 4 TIMES NOW!! *FAR AWAY NOW* this time! Holy crap.. (Remember folks, he is blind). Totally FREAKING amazing.. he's done with with a twist-tie in the livingroom floor, but only to bring it 'to the middle' of the floor (so he has room to wig out)..
He'll do this again.. I'm gonna get my camcorder (if it still has a working battery) and film this and convert it to streaming video.. your jaw will drop. EXTREMELY high intelligence.. heh.. cool! :D |
AWWWW! That's amazing, Dan! He must have a great sense of smell!
Smoochies to Choc! He's a beautiful AND talented kitty! Cloudy |

Awe Ziroc that's so sweet. I was reading it and thinking gee Ziroc gets excited about some strange things, but then I realised that Choc's blind... ;) That is pretty smart . My kitty hardly ever plays, and she's only just turned one. She's more a hunter, which is a shame because she's not allowed outside, or actually a blessing really, I'd hate to think of all the wildlife she'd kill. She doesn't purr either... she's actually lucky I love her so much or she'd be back to the breeder for a refund! :D

Yes, cats are relatively unnafected by human breeding, and thus retain almost all of the intelligance of the wild variety. If they cant use one sense, they will improvise... this is one of the best examples of such that I have ever come across (if not the best)

Now all can see how cats are the superior pets!!!!!!!
[EVIL LAUGHTER REPO'D] Anyway, unfortunately one of our cats is getting alittle old, and rarely hunts, just watches birds from inside, or it may have something to do with the fact he is quite a large cat. Our other one though!! Now she is a huntress, we often see dead birds and such, she even chases off cats twice her size, and she's really quite smalll. |

Our 4 are all fed from tins... (we get the best available in our area for them ofcourse)... ignorance is bliss, they say... BTW- im interested in what type of cat everyone has... so can people post their cats breeds here ?? I think it would be quite interesting... Our 4... We have a Siamese Brittish Seal point (simaese are the ones with a deep miaow... usually. Brittish Seal point are those with brown and black/brown fur), a siamese Lylic point (she has a high miaow for some reason... Lylic points have off-white, and grey), a Ginger, and a pure white kitten. All of them are ofcourse, very cute. Ziroc- about Choc banging his head against the loungue... our siamese do that aswell... I think it may be the siamese personality... choc does look alot like a brittish seal point, possibly crossed with something else... with a tiny bit of the second breed showing through. Back on topic... I think it may be a cry for attention, such as a little routine added to rubbing against your leg. |

I bet it does make him happy, obviously or he wouldn't keep coming back for more . Sometimes I feel guilty that Tuppence and I don't play that much, but honestly she just isn't really into playing. Biting, though, she likes that ;) . My arms aren't quite so enthusiastic, they have scratches all over them, lol. She'll be sleeping, looking all sweet and I'll come over and pat her and she'll get this evil look in her eyes, grab my arm in her paws, claws out, and bite me. I tell myself it's love... ;) Oh bugs, Tuppence catches all the bugs she can. The other day she got this really huge moth, which was great because usually the small ones lie down and don't get up again however much she prods at them with her paw, but this big moth was flapping around for ages! She had a ball :D . |

Dan, that's sooooo amazing about Choc! *sigh* Makes me miss my Siamese...when I moved to Tennessee, I couldn't take him with me and my parents had adopted a couple of new pups who were bigger than Sam and they were playing a bit too rough with him, so they let my Aunt (who'd wanted him since he was born) keep him..He's still with her and just turned 18!!!! years old on February 4th. He's slowed down quite a bit, but still in good health and with all of his teeth. :D
Lennon: My current kitties are Sugar (mostly black, bit of white of the belly and white whiskers) and Maerlynn (read as Merlin) who is a Black and White Tuxedo. He's psycho and races through the house like a madman. Sugar is more laid back. But they both play (when they aren't trying to kill each other ;) ). I also have an outside cat who has decided I suffice to provide him sustenance and affection. ;) He's an unusual combination of orange tabby and Siamese. He looks like a lilac point Siamese except that his points are orange tabby. ;) And he's got the most BEAUTIFUL blue eyes!!! :D Let us know, Dan, when/if you get that video of Choc. I'd love to see some of his amazing antics. |
Pets are so fun! I wish my allergies hadn't gotten so bad that I can't have any. Some years back I used to take in strays I found. Two really good animals come to mind because they kind of ended sadly. Lady was a pregnant German Sheperd, and a male cat that looked just like Choc. Well, we managed to find homes for all of Ladies puppies It was a litter of 12! Two died shortly after birth. One because of birth trauma and the other was accidentally smothered by the exhausted mom while trying to suckle. She was a great and loyal dog. Well behaved, kind and loving. A good protector for the wife too. The cat was just a cutie who liked to curl up on laps. Unfortunately, they both had the wander lust that strays tend to have. The dog jumped the fence and the cat punched through a window screen. Both managed to find their way to the main road and get hit by cars.

She's a grey cat too, and though she's not of a pure breed she does come closest to being a Blue Russian herself All she does is make strange sounds almost all the time, probably because she dares not go out and hasn't seen or heard another cat in years and because she constantly wants attention and someone to point out where her food is, even though she knows, and someone to open the doors, even though she can do that herself, and get cat treats. Oh, and she always stands on her hind legs when it's dinner time for us, leaning the front legs against the table and looking at you like she's starving and really really needs the food you're eating, only to put her nose into it and leave it lying on the ground It's like she's telling us to be her loyal and obedient servants or get a headache ;) |
That cat deserves some high-ass quality milk im sendin some gold top man..yeah my cats used to be efficient assassins like two/3 rabbits or birds a day

and he'll conquer the household! :3

And here I thought cats just made handy moving targets...
Ok ok so I dont really use cats as targets, I used to like them untill they made me allergic to them when I was 15 |

I quite like cats, but really I'm a bird person - I have a budgie and a Senegal parrot, birds are the best! |

But the shape of the head and eyes suggest something in that direction too. Then one time she had six little kittens, two black ones, one black-and-white, and three in all colours. Definately not a pure breed We kept the only girl, multi-coloured and with an orange spot on the top of her head. She used to sit on the table as well, and contary to her mother we allowed it (even when she was older we'd still see her as the cute little kitten she once was ) Unfortunately, she was run over :( |
*acknowledges Choc as a prince among cats* *bows*
I didn't know Choc was blind !! In fact, despite being a devoted cat lover, I haven't heard of any cat that was .. Can I ask how Choc got this condition? I would be fascinated to hear more details of his day to day adventures, and how he compensates for his lack of vision. ( My own kitty Azrey'lle is a 12YO female abyssinian/tabby X. The most devoted and loyal furry4legsandatail companion I have ever lived with. She is sitting on her rug beside my PC, watching me, and purring softly ... ) |
Thats so cute Ziroc! Choc has a great sense of hearing I think and a good awareness of his surroundings! It is you know really easy to teach a cat to fetch funny enough. Not sure how you would do it with a blind cat, but with a sighted cat you just toss a toy, cat runs after it, you follow cat, pick up toy (or take it out of its mouth LOL) and place the toy under the cat's chin. Then put your hand behind the cat's front legs, and slowly guide it to where you were sitting when you threw the toy in the first place. When you get there, drop the toy on the floor and give kitty lots of lovins and praise (even though cat hasn't really done anything yet, it was all you). Just repeat the process over and over, you'd be surprised how cats will catch on and learn to bring the toy back to you. Although watch out, you MAY create a monster, wherein in the middle of the night said cat may decide it wants to play fetch, and will drop the toy in your face whilst you are sleeping, or worse yet, the toy will will end up travelling under the covers, and you wake up with it pressed into your spine and wondering why your back hurts, only to reach around and bring up a "mousy" in your hands!!! (not a real mouse LOL, ack the horror if it were!)

quote:
Originally posted by Pangur Ban:

I remember there was a poodle for sale in the paper a while ago that needed a special home since it was born blind. Of course that's a dog but I imagine cats are similar in that way. |
Z, I think I know why Choc seems to look at you when you call him... I dont think a cat can be completely disabled in one area... just severly weakened. They can still use their sight/smell/hearing/whatever, just not as well.
One of the four I described earlier- Minty, the pure white one- is deaf... she can hear some things though... she cant hear you yelling 'BANG' directly behind her head, and she cant hear the dog barking at her, but she can hear, for example, my watch alarm. She can here, i think, high pitched sounds... AFAICS, Choc's sight would be similar... he would probably be able to make out rough shapes, but not in as much detail as most cats can. Ofcourse, cats are very intelligant (sometimes i think theyd have to be more intelligant than alot of humans... (no i said HUMANS not POLITICIANS!!)) and so I think they would know that they were weakened in that sense, and so they wouldnt rely on it... they would thus develope their other senses just as would happen if they were completely disabled in that area. |
Either that or Choc simply turns his head just so his ears can pick up the sounds you make best.
|
Well, actually all male white cats with blue eyes are deaf, and if they have one blue eye and one another colour, they are deaf in the ear on the blue eyes side, it's a genetic defect in the male chromosone of that type, also, it's so amazing how animals compensate, I've seen a cat with three legs that could still jump up walls and such.
Also, they don't just need their eyes for that sort of thing, they can judge the distance something is from their face with their whiskers. Amazing creatures, aint they? |
How did you come up with the name "Choc"? It's short for "Chocolate" isn't it
