I was reading the morningpaper this morning, and there was a interview with 3 religious leaders and they were asked what was the meaning of life.
2 of them said of course that meaning of life waas to devote your life to god and such and such... but the third guys said the question was wrong, because the meaning of everything is life. Life is the climax of all creation... I just found it very interesting... and then turned to the comic section Anyway, I was wondering what you guys thought was the meaning of life? |
you really don't know what is the meaning of life. and that is not what is important. it is how you have come to the conclusion on what is its meaning... and this is by how you live it ;)
|
In the immortal words of Douglas Adams...the meaning of life the universe and everything is 42. ;)
|
There isn't any definite meaning of life. It depends on the person. For me it's happiness.

Keats wrote in Ode on a Grecian Urn (I prefer Chinese porcelain, actually :D ):
"Beauty is truth, truth beauty." -- that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. Make your life a pursuit of beautiful things -- not just in the narrow sense of the fine arts, but also in the more important sense of developing your inner beauty. That, for me, would suffice as the meaning of life. (You might also like to look at the Religion II thread started by Cerek.) |
If you think that your own happiness is the meaning (or possibly purpose) of your life then it is entirely external to society. What I mean is that as far as the rest of the world goes, if you achieve your aim then you might as well not have existed. I don't know if that is my purpose. I think this question is what makes me beleive in god - there is no answer to be found in humanity for definite. But if no one knows then - Why? Why everything, why anything... sorry, this is rambling a bit. Hope some of that made sense...

The meaning of your life is what you (and others) give to it.
The meaning of life in general is to remain alive. Or, in any case, that's what makes sense to me. |
The meaning of life is to let you know the inevitability of your death.

The meaning of life is: state of living beings, characterized by growth, repoduction and reponse to stimuli.
|
The meaning of life is to live life to the fullest.

Whoooooooooooooaaaaaaaa!! You put the quotation marks in!! LOL LOL Litereary critics have bashed eachother's heads in with big dictionaries over those two silly quotation marks :D (...) a friend to man, to whom thou sayest: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty.(") That is all Ye know on Earth, and all ye need to know(") Where do they go? Finding that out is the meaning of my life, heh. |
meaning of life??... that is the question ... but for me to live is how the way you wish to live it.

The Dalai Lama said something like this: The meaning of life is to achive happiness without having a reason for it (happiness). Sounds deep.
And biologists will say we exist in order to reproduce. |

I didn't know that! (The quotes were taken directly from Vol. 4 of W. T. Jones' A History of Western Philosophy, punctuation marks and all. )
quote:
Where do they go? Finding that out is the meaning of my life, heh.

If you really can find satisfaction in that, so be it. Actually I read somewhere: "What isn't the meaning of life? Everything is life." This is from The Myth of Freedom by the Tibetan Buddhist philosopher Chogyam Trungpa. He was quoting someone else with respect to this little piece of wit, though, and he also viewed this answer as being... too 'pat', too simplistic... [ 02-08-2002: Message edited by: K T Ong ]
|
