What does the term Magyar mean then?
Hey, I might not be knowledgable, but at least I'm willing to learn ;) |
Magyar is just "Hungarian" in Hungarian :D like Deutsch is "German" in German.
|
Aha. Thanks for enlightening me.
|
Hm i could Say I'm from Hungary
But i would just be lying My uncle does live there though if that comforts you in any way |
Sorry Vask, don't think I've ever seen any Magyar/Hungarian people around here :( They may be lurking though :D
On that note, are there any Czechs in the house? We're doing a piece by Janacek in choir now and bugger those consonants are a mouthful! LOL |
Well, I'm not sure about Magyars but I'd sure like to know if there are any RUSSIANS around here :D .

He recently returned under the name Euronymous, but I haven't seen him in a while. Oh, and did you know Cloudy studied Russian language and literature and visited the country as well? |
Loser aka Fingofin (he really called himself loser)

'Hungarian' is what we call residents of Hungary - even though you guys call the place 'Republic of the Magyars' or something. Surrounding Euro states all have derivations of the name 'Hungary' too. 'Ungarn' etc. I'd say it comes from the Austrian Empire (Osterreich) days yes? On that name, it's interesting that we use a phonetic translation -'Austria' for 'Osterreich' - even though it literally means 'Eastern Empire'. Screwy naming once again :( Right Epona? :( |
Vaskez, I had a Magyar student once, a young man named Brock Tamasi. I think I've mentioned him before to you.
I've also been to Budapest. Nice place. Great, cheap wine. Friendly people. Still have some Forintz back home. Are you in Budapest? |
well
i'm not magyar but i am romanian so when are you coming to romania? |

I just posted this thread now cos I was inspired by Byronas' "Yahoo another Greek person.." thread. :D Hmm Austria....Osterreich...damn I never click that Osterreich was eastern empire, it's so obvious what with Ost=East in german and Reich I could've guesses from Third Reich or whatever :D Heh we call the place Magyarország which means Magyar country. To be honest, I'm not quite sure where the term Hungary, Ungarn etc. comes from ??? (shame on me :D ) any ideas Yorick? <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by Yorick: Vaskez, I had a Magyar student once, a young man named Brock Tamasi. Heh I was born in Budapest and have relatives there but live in England...haven't I told you this before? I don't think I could speak/write English like this if I didn't live here. :D Forints..yeah you mentioned that too..around the time I arrived here on IW in April or May last year. Hehe, bet the ones you got aren't worth much now...luckily it has stabilised in the last 2 years. |

No but I might be the first official American. With a ethnic ancestry of Polish, Russian, German, Italian, and Lithuanian I guess there just isn't enough pure blood left in me to call me anyone of those so I guess that leaves me with Red, White, and Blue flowing through this body.
Thank you, Uncle Sam |
Last bump in hope....
|
Vaskez,
I'm 1/4 Hungarian, does that count? My Grandfather came over from Hungary. I'm also Ukrainian, German and Irish... :D |
LOL nice heritage you got there....it is a statistical fact that mixing genes of different ethnic groups creates the best offspring...so are you exceptionally intelligent or athletic or something seeing as you have so many different genes? :D
Heh, that's one reason why America is so successful- due to the sheer variety of people there-such a huge and varied genepool. But the 1/4 Hungarian part must make you pretty intelligent :D . Guess you don't speak the language though do you? |
Hey is anyone Gibraltarian? (the room suddenly becomes quiet and all the occupants stare at the lone figure :D ). Sorry I had to ask.

Not Hungarian, no, but my wife and I spent three weeks in Budapest (with a few days in Kecskemet) this past September. We'd been there about ten years ago, and still feel Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities we've ever seen. Even if it has started added on Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken. ;)
We rented rooms in homes, attended classical and folk concerts (including Muzsikas), hit the museums, did a lot of walking, and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. |
