For those of you who doesn't know what it is, it's roleplaying, only that you dress up and more "becomes" the character you play, rather than playing it..
Then you go out into the woods, or something more suitable, a couple of days (or weeks) along with other people who live, and just role-play..
Fight, talk, hunt, steal, love etc..
I was thinking of start "liveing", because I have a friend who has been doing it awhile, and has invited me to join him..
So I was wondering..Does anyone here live?

Tarox 01-26-2002 07:49 AM

Haha
Is this for real??

OMG how uhmm *thinks of politically correct word* "unusual"

J'aran 01-26-2002 08:04 AM

I haven't done it myself, but I know someone who has. It seems like fun, although maybe a bit harder than PnP. It seems to me that you should have some acting-skills, or at least a bit of a poker-face to do it properly. And those are qualities I'm not particularly blessed with.

Legolas 01-26-2002 08:15 AM

Hehe, sounds like fun
Let's organise an IWday in -insertsuitablywoodycountryhere- and live

Neb 01-26-2002 08:32 AM

I've tried it, nothing really special about it, in fact I'd prefer a good game of PnP to it any day.

I did some LARPing long ago.

Normal LARPing (I always picked Warrior-Priest as Monks were on a short-list) was crap to be honest. The whole thing was munchkin-city and utter crap. I used Mace in one hand and used the other to block and parry (Martial parries against armed attacks is against elbows/wrists etc and the GM moaned when I did that)

I also did Vampire LARP. That was UTTER rubbish, it really was. I was looking forward to some RP as a vampire from an assassin clan but the rest were a collection of whingers and fat goths

Wouldn't recommend it to be honest

Sounds to me that you were on a "boffer" LARP (hope that's the english word for it ), that, I agree, sounds like it's more for teenage guys with an urge for pounding eachother senseless..
Apparently, that's one typ of LARP, and then there's the part of it where you only role-play, and don't fight that much..
That is what I'm supposedly gonna try.. ;)

Sir ReGiN 01-26-2002 10:28 AM

Oh and if you're interested; here's a site (swedish, but it shouldn't be a problem, just click the RED texts and you should be fine ;) ) with pictures from swedish live-roleplays..
Pretty interesting

EDITED due to those annoying URL's that won't work

There's a Vampire LARP near where I live every week after dark. I don't LARP, but I know a few people who do. I suppose it depends on the people you're with - like every RP.

Konfuzed and Zany 01-27-2002 08:00 AM

so how does lavitate work

Sorcerer Alex 01-27-2002 08:09 AM

I'm starting to feel really left out on this forum

I have no idea what LARP or PnP is. Am I missing something here? ;)

The town I come from (back in leafy Surrey) has a battle renactment every year from the English Civil War. I have always been tempted by that, people seem to get very engrossed in the whole thing. But it is still much more fun to watch - a group of guys dressed as Roundheads and Cavaliers fighting in the highstreet with fake muskets. But that is probably not the same kind of thing really.

debiler 01-27-2002 07:30 PM

I am still doing LARP once or twice a year. And if you´re with the right party, it´s great fun. Last time we went as an order of warriors, singing war songs when we charged into battle. It was just impressive.

<font color"yellow">I tried it, and I think personally is way too additctive.

My Uncle as an example, LOVED D&D, man that guy that was crazy about this stuff. He used to make swords wrapped around with some cotton in them and duck tape or whatever you call that thing hehe, get some friends together and well he wasted half of his childhood doing that which ruined his college and a big part of his life hehe. So its really not worth it if you're trying to persue your career. Living in fantasy is not too good, we're in the real world here guys ;)

I think you mean LARP, and not D&D?

D&D was, and still is, a table game (PnP) for the most part. LARP is actually getting dressed up and acting out the parts.

I guess any game can become too addictive if you get too involved in it, regardless of what type it is. I've seen die-hard table-top gamers that can talk of nothing else but the stuff, and SCA people who are in "character" even during their daily routines. Likewise, I've seen far more who treat it as a hobby and an important part of their lives, but not *totally* their life.

Cheers,

LennonCook 01-27-2002 11:18 PM

Ive never even heard of it before!! Then ofcourse I am VERY new to the ADND system, and have never even played PNP. Ill have to ask my brother about it next time I talk to him though (he lives in sydney so we dont talk too often), if anyone I know knows, then it will be him!!

Durwyn 01-28-2002 12:24 AM

Neg Saz , I meant exactly D&D, IE = Dwarfs, Trolls, the whole world of D&D is basically what I meant. So he basically played it with his friend. Dessed up and all, had like good 20-40 friends with him go to some woods, they had their plastic swords, all dressed, perfectly prepared for some quality time roleplaying and then they would clash like armies each consisting of 10-20 people and fight it out, not too harsh of course, but they actually had wooden plates of armor if you will, under their D&D-like shirts and clothes.

And in any case it becomes very addictive. Some people I heard even live like that, in a fantasy world, excluding the worries of outside world and well, being bankropts hehe.

On the "getting to commited" issue.
There have been a few deaths in sweden, were people who are involved in LARPhave killed themselves, as in described in their role/character..
Pretty scary, but those are the real psychos..

Warhammer players might be interested to know that one of the top figure designers (one of the Perry twins I believe) blew his hand off when LARPing. He was part of a cannon crew, using real gunpowder. You make one mistake...

But I think there is probably some happy medium between looking slightly sad and actually killing or maiming yourself. And the most common injury when doing this kind of stuff is usually horse related. If you are not used to riding horses remember to stay on the ground, as whatever you are dressed as it is going to hurt when you fall off.
