An Aussie in the final 8 of the World Darts Championship. Considering how my good mate Donut was making great mileage out of the complete British domination of this sport, he is going to have to swallow a great deal of humble pie if the improbable happens :D . Just so as you know, Donut, I have pre-baked the pie, and it is currently drying out daily in the HOT Aussie sun. It will be very hard to swallow if we need it in a day or two .

These are halcyon days for British sport. Greg Rusedski has beaten Goran Ivansisvnananavitch and is in the final of the Heineken Open in Auckland. In squash Peter Nicol became the first man since janshir Khan to win the US Open. In cricket the mighty Australians are humbled by the lowly Kiwis in the cricket and play is held up for 10 minutes because people are throwing objects on the pitch.

Happy days Davros

Donut 01-11-2002 10:57 AM

I've just read that there were 22 arrests and 250 people ejected - bloody cricket hooligans! They don't like losing do they? ;)

Davros 01-11-2002 12:11 PM

Sigh - you start a perfectly good darts thread, because 4 days ago that's all they wanted to talk about - now the're back on the cricket. Constance thy name is Donut (NOT, LoL :D ). So you must let me know how our mighty champion gets on - here we go, here we go, here we go!!!!!

Downunda 01-11-2002 05:23 PM

to be fair to the aussies, the final ball didn't go anywhere near the bat as it passed to Parore's gloves

sylent 01-12-2002 01:30 AM

I saw the back cover of the local newspaper (melbourne style) this morning, which read "How did we lose?"
Considering the position Australia lost from, its probably a good question.

(Was this a cricket thread?) ;)

Donut 01-12-2002 07:08 AM

*Ducks the metaphorical bottles being thrown by Davros & sylent*

Glennis McGrath banned for one match for dissent! Youse Aussies will have to show some graciousness when beaten. :D

Greg Rusedski wins the NZ open.

Now, back to the darts. Aussie Tony David, a lifelong haemophiliac (it doesn't make him a bad person) has reached the semi finals of the Embassy World Championship. I feel there is something intrinsically wrong with Australians playing darts. You see the dart doesn't return to their hand when thrown they have to walk to the board and take it out. Stick to boomerangs old bean

I'd love to put a gang of hooligans against the Bloods in LA... now that would be a short gang battle.

Tony David is a haemophiliac ? Is haemophillia a part of Australia then?

I seem to remember Donut crowing that the top 4 darts players in the world were British (possibly he even said English). So which of those 4 pillars of the darts aristocracy failed? And ooooohhhh, the unthinkable could happen :D - that humble pie really dried out in the hot sun today LOL.

Downunda 01-12-2002 06:46 PM

Congratulations to Greg Rusedski ;)

What's Darts?

It's a bit like boxing really all the crap players couldn't win so they started their own federation, next thing you know you've got all sorts in the semis. They wouldn't live with the big boys

Durwyn 01-12-2002 08:17 PM

Hmmm, Dart Playing? Sound very intriguing, I are to try it sometime. I mean I'm quite European myself yet I live most of the time in USA, but Dart Playing, never heard of that. Is it an Asutralian-only sport?

sylent 01-12-2002 08:44 PM

From the sounds of it, dart-throwing is the pride of England...
Though I have never seen it played professionally. Most games seem to have a world championship of some sort, but like most things, Australia only hears about it if they are winning or hosting the event (ie. the soccer)

Davros 01-13-2002 04:41 AM

And the latest news is :

Australia's Tony David called on the memories of his painful childhood to push him into the final of the world darts championship.

The disability pensioner who has suffered haemophilia all his life continued his remarkable adventure when he won through to Monday's final with a dramatic victory over England's Martin Adams.

David raced to a 4-1 lead in the best of nine sets semi-final, but the English captain and World Cup singles champion fought back to lock the scores before the 34-year-old from Townsville hung on to win the final leg of the final set to win 5-4.

With the match in the balance in the last set, David used the same mental strength which helped him survive a childhood spent in hospitals and beat doctors' predictions that he wouldn't live to age 20.

He meets another Englishman, Mervyn King, in the final at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green just outside London for the STG48,000 ($A137,655) prize - almost 10 years worth of his pension.

Ranked 18 in the world, needing injections every couple of days and with one leg four centimetres shorter than the other, David has beaten the third seed, sixth seed and now No.2 in successive matches to reach the final.

No Australian had ever reached the semis before and David could become only the second non-European and third non-Briton to take the game's most prestigious title.

"The Aussies have beaten us in everything, but at least darts was one sport we thought would be safe," said tournament press officer, Englishman Robert Holmes.

Mwahaha - Donut thought the same thing as this Mr Robert Holmes. Hiding places are getting scarce my friend. Oooh, the irony, Ooooh the ecstasy - OOOOooooohhhhhh YEeeeeeeessssss!!!!!

Downunda 01-13-2002 07:07 AM

Aussie have just lost their 2nd game of ODI cricket in a row, to South Africa this time... is this the begining of the end for them? hehe

Davros 01-13-2002 05:07 PM

Is that right Lanesra - OMG - now you wouldn't joke about something as serious as this now, would you. Our news service isn't big on darts, so it will take a while to filter back here.

Oh well, Lanesra is a trusyworthy soul...., so, COME ON DOWN HERE DONUT. HUMBLE PIE IS READY AND WAITING - YOU HAVE TO EAT THE WHOLE DARN THING -

Davros 01-14-2002 04:16 AM

No Donut reply - how disappointing - maybe he is choking down that pie still :D .

No pie for me Davros - being the Embassy World Darts champion is like being the WUS heavyweight boxing champion. He wouldn't live with Phil Taylor. The people who run the Embassy won't allow their champion to play Taylor in a challenge match because of the humiliation. :D

Davros 01-14-2002 05:09 AM

C'mon Donut.....this is a league in which only 3 non-Brits, and only one non-European have won in like a million years. LOL, I just now heard the TV in the background hail Australia's latest World Champion - story to follow after an ad-break :D . It was one hell of an achievement, and there is no way you could have expected it. The timing could not have been better after your proclamation as to English Darts superiority a week ago :D .

Look, here, let me cut a slice for you, and here's a pint of Cider to wash it down with...... WOOHOO!!!!!

LOL, you sound so utterly dismayed that I have to wonder what managed to tweak your interest there Avatar ole mate - :D looks like words did indeed manage to escape you. Hmm, let's see, it doesn't appear to be the topic (sport), or the converstaion of two friends .... umm, wouldn't be the cakeshop would it - you know, all that talk of pies and donuts - OK, here, have a custard tart, now cheer up, life's too short as it is.

For your edification, Donut and I are not total opposites in all things - among other things, we both share a love of Cider and of the Arsenal Football Club. I like to stay in touch with my friends - he and Mouse are the only two that I have met from IW in real life. Vanilla slice anyone.....

Whoops (blush) - I am bloody repentant there Lanesra - that should have read, Donut and Mouse AND LANESRA are the only ones I have met in real life - a thousand apolgies and all that - hey, it was not your coat I spilt the Cider on - I resent that implication :D . How did Donut enjoy the pie (Davros is still chuckling to himself).

Oh, and what hapened to the "other post" - did he delete it, or is it back on the previous page?

Thanks for the words of support.

Oh dear Avatart, who rattled your cage then?

You see, it's not what Davros and I are saying to each other, it's how we are saying it. We are two friends fighting a duel and our weapons are words. It's called banter, and when you are less annually challenged and slightly less damp behind your aural cavities you will come to understand it.

Lost for words, surely not Avatar, you who brought us such eloquent threads as 'I am sooo silly'.

I have been told that these Aussie/Pom threads are like an alien language to some members of IW. I understand that, to many the ongoing war between the Aussies and the Mother Country which is thinly disguised as sporting contests holds little interest, but it is the only way that Australia can shake that chip from their shoulder. :D But who could fail to be impressed by the level of badinage between Davros and myself - only a fool.

Lost for words, surely not Avatar, you who can start a thread in the Role Playing Forum entitled 'The Fluffy Home World' - how the hell do you think them up so fast?

I rarely take it upon myself to state what people should or should not post. If you wish to post drivel which is totally devoid of humour, subtlety or profundity then that is your decision. If the discourse between other members is above your level then that's just tough.

Lost for words, surely not Avatar, you of the 'What kind of dessert are you' threads, or the 'Wow, we've got (insert number from top of the page here) members' threads.

IW is a big board so I am not concerned about what you post here - what I am concerned about is that you are over the voting age and may choose to exercise your franchise at the next election.

Donut: *sigh* words never escape me.

Actually, for the last 100 years Australia have been trying to convince the Poms that they can't play sport, but they never seem to learn, no matter how many floggings they go through. :D Kind of like this guy. :D

I'm loving this thread! Darts, anyone? :D

Hey - that's Davros to a tee, are you going to step in Nanny?

Just two words Memnock - LLeyton Hewitt. First top seed to lose in the first round of a grand slam competition since 1990. Gi Timbo!!

Stuff him, he's crook asnyway, we've still got the SCUD!! :D

Nothing on this thread that needs nannying, double-donut-seven. And btw, I wonder why Phil Taylor didn't enter the Embassy World Darts championship - perhaps he didn't want to lose...?

Lanesra 01-15-2002 09:02 AM

I see the 'home' advantage worked well in the tennis Davros, first of all Timbo and greg despatch two Aussie wannabes and then the home favourite Leighton Blewit crashed out in the first round but it's ok it was down to cramp Ahh bless him.Well never mind that pie is on a Quantus flight as we speak albeit a little soggy from the English rain should make it easier to swallow Maybe ironworks should buy us some some nice shiny shovels to aid us in digging these holes for ourselves

Hmm, intersting post Donut :D - showing off our typical eloquence again are we - nice points, and well made. Let's see - Lanesra, where's the acceptance of my apology , and I would expect that humble pie is only for those that make the boasts before the event (aka World Darts Championship :D ). I don't recall boasting that Mr Hewitt would carry all before him, his recent illness knocked that level of cockiness out of me. Still, you must remind me, my ancient history is not that good - last Englishman to win a tennis major was????

I will certainly accept my share of said pie, if indeed it transpires that the green and gold antipodeans fail in their efforts to snatch "one day cricket" glory.
