i have this really wild idea that popped into my mind recently about banning and i know that this sounds frivolous or even wierd.

in this idea, i find that before banning the person, i think the person should have something like a court defense with his own personal lawyer and witness that could testify. a number of judges will be in order (like mods with Z) to debate on the matter and hand out the judgement. people could have thier own private thread that could be optional for private or public matter. it may even have thier own judgement area.

negative thingie about it:
of course it sounds very democratic, time-consuming, and very hassle to find a certain time for the mods to time it together. it will aslo hassle Z to make a new thing and Z owns this website therefore and his word is the law. he already gave a number of guidelines (laws) for us to follow and we are already given warning first before banning.

positive thing about this:
i honestly dont know that is why its an idea

so what do you think?

Thus, this idea would not realy be feasable because it would have no real use... but it was a good thought, and im wondering what the mods and Ziroc have to say about it... for all I know, they might adopt it! </font>

Umm.. Hark.. nice try.. but not likely! This is Ziroc's world and he makes the rules and punishes those that break them. We aren't a democracy where 'trials' are held. Sookma is right.. the admin here tries to be fair and impartial in things and Ziroc has the final say on everything. [img]smile.gif[/img]

The rules are there when people join up and are available for reading any time.... following them is simple enough for the vast majority of members and bannings are pretty rare, except for true trolls. [img]smile.gif[/img] We don't like trolls.... hehehe

And like the others said, here Ziroc is God and the rest of the mods are like demi-gods, so we have to do what they say!

I hear what you're saying, but absolutely not. ;)

Forums are NOT democracies...they are most often benevolent autocracies that are owned by an individual/s. That individual's power is absolute, and so it should be. Mods are people who the forum owner vests his power to to help manage the forum. If the owner has chosen correctly, the mods should minimize the amount of time he needs to manage the forum and maximize the time he has to enjoy it. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Most forum owners and mods are very fair and reasonable people who believe in freedom of speech and rights of the individual and are more than willing to let members have their say and act however they want (within very reasonable guidelines). When they do make a decision on banning or suspension however it is expected that those decisions should be abided by by all, as they would not have made those decisions lightly, and they would have done so in the best interest of the forum.

People tend to think that a forum is like a country where everyone has democratic rights when it is not...think of it as one HUGE and neverending party at the forum owner's house. If someone is misbehaving, the owner of the house is entitled to ask the misbehaving person to settle down, or ask him to leave if he refuses to do so. Know what I mean? ;)

I appreciate your suggestion, but it would be unworkable in practice. Besides, I think Z's the most laid-back forum owner I've ever met, and our rules are very reasonable, mate! ;)

I agree with Memnoch on almost all points although sometimes mods do have to indeed be on the alert of offensive and childish behavior to make the boards enjoyable for everyone. This sometimes is very hassling. arrgh. but overall i still like message boards and agree that the owners of a board should do what they like with their own board, those not happy with the owners methods should find another place where they are happy

Oh ye gods and firestones, not THAT old thing again!! MUST we consistently bring up such nasty topics such as banning here? The forum's not even been up for three days already!

What makes you think that this is a democracy? Do your tax dollars go to support Ironworks, or Ziroc's efforts? Do you think this is a publicly-funded institution? It is OWNED by Ziroc, and he sets the rules of conduct for this forum, and it is by his call ONLY that anyone ever gets banned. (I can count on one hand the number of bannings, not SUSPENSIONS, mind you, that have occurred here...out of over 5000 members.)

Do you have ANY idea how good this forum is? I've just dealt with a couple of hideously negative forums over the past three weeks, and let me tell you, Ironworks is a holy SANCTUARY compared to them. You don't want to go anywhere near them, mark my words...those people are NUTS.

Appreciate Ironworks for what it is, and quit trying to make it into something it's not.

There is one point you are forgetting. This board is NOT a democracy. It is solely owned and managed by Ziroc. We are just guest here. He can ask and ban anyone for any reason he chooses. To avoid being banned we all need to act like guest.

Um, Arvon.... this same point has been made by several people in this thread, some of them moderators. There's no need to rub it in, it was only an idea and Harkoliar has already agreed that it probably wasn't a good one.

Even if it WAS a democratic board, it would not be entirely feasible.

The offender's ability to opst would need to be removed until the decision has been made (much like disciplinary action in a large company)

To be honest, Z tends to give warnings to small offenders. He reserves bannings for major or repeat offenders [img]smile.gif[/img]

As for the rest of the ideas, as some of the more experienced mods have said (and I agree) IW is Ziroc's house, we are guests and must abide by the rules.
