OK - this is probably a stupid question but is there anyway at all that I could change my displayed name while keeping everything else the same.

The reason is that I didn't know what a fab community spirit there was on this board, so I just stopped by and registered without giving my name much thought. Everyone else (mostly) has the most fantastic, imaginative names and I feel very humbled my mine.

I would imagine the answer to my question is no - start from scratch but maybe there is a workaround.

Neb 11-03-2001 09:08 AM

Unfortunately I believe that the answer to your question is, indeed, no.

Sir Exxon 11-03-2001 09:10 AM

Dont say that my good Neb.
On the my profile button, you can change your display name but not your username.
This is a new thing after the upgrade.

Neb 11-03-2001 09:11 AM

For once I am happy to be corrected, thank you for doing so Exxon.

Dreamer128 11-03-2001 09:12 AM

Hey! This rocks!
Thanks Ziroc!
Dreamer128 just became Velkyn.

Rikard_OHF 11-03-2001 09:13 AM

AARG Velkyn
That's a Dark Elf Name
MURDER DEATH KILLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
er... oops
I'm a pacifist :(

Sir Exxon 11-03-2001 09:13 AM

No problem, Neb!
(I am writing a lot of things in bold now, cause I just figured out how to do it. This is also the upgrades work.)

You dare insult a Dark Elf, Rikard T'Aranaxz?
It would be wise to watch your back from now on!

Sir Byronas 11-03-2001 09:19 AM

Great!!! Now Paladins of Keldorn's Order can change their nicknames!! Do you like mine?

Sir Exxon 11-03-2001 09:22 AM

Wow, great idea, Sir Byronas!
I am doing the same.
(I removed the "Lord", cause it sounds stupid with Sir Lord Exxon!)

Sorcerer Alex 11-03-2001 09:34 AM

It's me, Sorcerer Alex (sooo sick of that name)

Tabitha Silverwill 11-03-2001 09:35 AM

Thank you very much Sir Exxon.

I'm glad that I asked the stupid question - obviously there were others who wanted to know but were too embarrassed to ask :D

I'm off to think up a good one.

Tabitha Silverwill 11-03-2001 09:48 AM

Now, isn't that better than willow2?

:D

Thank you to everyone who made it possible. Just need a nifty sig pic now.

Neb 11-03-2001 09:49 AM

If you wish to have a cool sig, make a post on the "Saz's Sig Shoppe" thread, asking for one.

Rikard_OHF 11-03-2001 09:49 AM

You stil got WILL in it ;)

Grojlach 11-03-2001 09:56 AM

Name changes??? I have a worrying feeling some people will change their names 3 times a day, playing "Who am I?" games. I am already waiting for the first person going to impersonate another member. :D

Memnoch 11-03-2001 09:57 AM

OMG. This will drive us mods crazy trying to work out who you all are now!

I guess this retrospectively changes your name as well, so "Dreamer128" never existed! ;)

Sir Exxon 11-03-2001 10:00 AM

Memnoch is right.
Therefor, I suggest that if you want to change names, just change it once.

I was thinking the exact same thing...
Please memnoch, remove or restrict this function!

Somebody had better not do this. Impersonation of another for malicious purposes is an offence here, and will be dealt with severely. IP addresses do get logged.

Change your name if you must, but don't impersonate others - ESPECIALLY mods or admins. ;)

Vaskez 11-03-2001 10:09 AM

Hmm I don't like this either...not only for the reason Grojlach mentioned, but because it gets DAMN annoying trying to work out who is who when ppl keep changing their names. I use this name everywhere and never change it and it makes it easier on everyone. Ok so unless it is already taken.

Perhaps not! Won't the member number remain the same?! ;) :D

Tabitha Silverwill 11-03-2001 10:14 AM

Oh dear. I think I might have opened a can of worms here. I can appreciate the problems it will cause. Promise not to change mine again - may I keep this one though, please ;)

Well spotted Rikard - I couldn't completely lose the Will/Willow link.

(BTW - I think I'm falling in love with you Rikard, just wish everyone would stop picking on you. Perhaps I could one day become maiden to your knight :sigh:. Bet you have a whole harem of admirers)

Moni, have you ever tried to remember 4000+ member numbers?

It would go something like this:

"Oi, #36, good to see you again. You won't bother the mods, will you? Hey, #1247, you're easy to remember - first the number 12, multiply that by 4 (numbers in your member number), equals 48, less 1, makes 47, so you're #1247. #4020, stop that! Only one name change per day allowed!!"

:D

I can just feel Rikard blushing here. Maybe we should call him Rusty Rikard? Or Rosy Rikard? :D

Dreamer128 11-03-2001 10:21 AM

Your right, this will probably get confusing.
But i've been wanting to change my nick to Velkyn for a long time. Its the name i use everywhere else.

Sorcerer Alex 11-03-2001 10:22 AM

Memnoch, would it not be an idea to make everyone who changes their name email one of you moderators, so that everyone knows who's who? Or maybe we could devote a thread to it? Just a suggestion

ROFL! You don't have to remember them if you have them listed somewhere. All you need to know is the username, which from what I understand from this thread can't be changed. For most of the older members, I would bet you mods pretty much know who is who already.
See, if I ever changed my display name, you would know it is me, simply because I mentioned the number thing. ;) :D

P.S. I made that post before I read your warning against impersonating other members...I see you have that part of it covered LOL.
I also think that if anyone cares that we know who they are, they'd mention the change too. :D

Moni, you're giving me too much credit here...I can see myself with a 40-page list of 4000 names saying: "...member #2784, that's page 28, who IS that?? Where are my damned spectacles...!"

;)

Sounds good. BTW, who are you again? Member #2773, let me look you up...ahh, Sorcerer Alex! You're a good guy...wait, you're #2773? Sorry...the good guy was #2774. You're listed here as "potential troublemaker". Move along now!

:D

I'm just kidding, btw...member #2773. ;)

LOL, Well that would only be necessary to know who is who if trouble starts which we all know is not a common occurence here.
(I edited my last post to add another comment in that regard.)

Well, could this feature be changed in a way that only moderators are able to change names, and that people are only able to request one change?
...On the other hand, that will give the mods a lot of extra work... Nope, I think disabling the entire feature is perhaps the best thing to do... :(

I agree. It could be too easy for someone who used to be in Clan HADB (May their laundry always smell fresh) to leave the clan without saying goodbye.

Other than clan business, I think that it would be very confusing for anyone and everyone to have the ability to change their names at will. I will stick with what I have until I am banned.

so mote it be

Let's give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Regular members will realize that it's in their best interest to keep their name as it's the only way others will recognize them. If they DO change, I'm sure they will let us know. Besides, most people have equity in their name once they've had it for a while, especially if they use the same name on different boards. I use Memnoch on all the boards I visit, so people always know it's me. I know Groljach and Vaskez do the same. Find a cool name and stick to it would be my advice. ;)

We'll trust these guys to do the right thing, as we always do, and only do something if they break that trust.

Hmm. I like the idea of having a shortlist of "Ironworks Infidels"! ;)

No worries, just having a bit of fun!

ROFL! "Ironworks Infidels"
I know you are just having fun, it shows and it is cracking me up. :D

Hiram,
Keeping the name you have until you get banned!
Funny!

Fljotsdale 11-03-2001 11:10 AM

Is there any way this could be made a 'permission only' function? Like it is switched off normally, but if you ask a Mod you can change it - at the Mod's discretion? Or would this be too complicated to do individually?

Sigmar 11-03-2001 12:06 PM

Cypher or Sigmar?

Neb 11-03-2001 12:06 PM

I vote Sigmar!

Maybe I can use numerology to find out who the potential troublemakers are. If the sum of your numbers end in an odd number...beware!! :D
