how do I start?

anyone who is experienced in this can offer any advice?

I am a newbie at HTML, but I want to make a neat looking website, any suggestions on what program to look into?

Ziroc, Avatar, Rikard (do you have one?) and other people, any help please?

Sorcerer Alex 09-23-2001 07:07 AM

I've made dozens of sites, and I recommend:

http://homestead.com/

It's free and easy to make a site with this. You just sign up and you're ready to go.

250 09-23-2001 07:40 AM

thx man! will look into all of them! appreciate ya help

Vaskez 09-23-2001 07:42 AM

Hey 250 just because you don't know HTML you don't need a host that has a site-builder facility. In fact I don't like homestead either with that huge thing at the bottom "BUILT BY HOMESTEAD" it's got "Can't do HTML" written all over it. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif
Nah the truth is that no one makes sites purely in HTML these days....it takes too long. They use software packages like Sierra Webstudio (what I used for my site http://vaskez.tripod.com ) and the most professionals aparently use Dreamweaver. For animations you can use Macromedia Flash which is a wicked tool and for nice other effects you can use java scripts but they are the most difficult to learn to make. So just get a web-design tool and choose any host. There are loads of free ones: Tripod, Angelfire, Geocities, although granted, those aren't the best ones. Try maybe worldzone or cjb.net? Look around, do a search for web-hosting.

I will recommand Netfirms or F2S
but both are FTP server so you need a FTP uploader first
Netfirms comes with a FTP tutorial
FTP is faster then uploading with browser but requeres a FTP progrom
doesn;t affect your site, only your uploading method
I got Leap FTP but my free trial will be over soon so I'll have to find a new one http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
also coffeecup is very useful as a webpage builder
If you want a easy but amaturic site you can use geocities

links:
http://www.netfirms.com
http://www.f2s.com
http://www.yahoo.com (geocities)
http://www.leapware.com
http://www.coffeecup.com

if you want good examples of sites
http://www.tgeweb.com

250 09-23-2001 09:16 AM

another thing, are there any free programs for web page building?

do I have to upload everything? because I am thinking if it is possible to work online, so I don't have to upload... or maybe no?

anyone? thanks!

Vaskez 09-23-2001 09:28 AM

LOL u can work online if u edit in HTML. But making graphics and stuff is done offline so u'd still have to upload the bulk. BTW even MS Word let's u make basic webpages. Just insert images and the text and save it as an HTML file.

whats a good program that helps making webpage? (free) you guys have mentioned those good programs, I am just curious, are there any free ones? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

adam warlock 09-23-2001 09:37 AM

If you are using IE browser right now, you should have a basic program called 'FrontPage Express'

I use Microsoft Frontpage2000 but you have to buy this package... http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

Hehe, there are loads of free programs if you are happy to use trial versions. Frontpage as mentioned, Sierra Webstudio, Dreamweaver, MS Word, and countless others....take a look at any computer magazine (non-game related) and it's bound to have some new web-design tool trial version on it's cover CD. Just install a new one each month and u have free programs for life http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

no worry, I will see what I can do about that...

Rikard 09-23-2001 10:41 AM

Try Coffeecup
they will give you a 30 day trial and in that 30 days you can build a website
AND while you make a website with coffecup you can see what HTML codes there are and what is usefull
so after those 30 days you don;t need it anymore http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Geocities provides a free webbuilder but it's kinda basic

is NetFirms good for hosting pictures?

I mean, they have a restriction that only 1MB file size is allowed for Free regeistration. does that mean each picture must be smaller than 1MB? or total size of the webpage?

Vaskez 09-23-2001 12:10 PM

Hmm I use Tripod. You get 50MB free and cgi-bin and everything.....there are 2 drawbacks:
- No external linking to images.
- A small banner on every page.

I started just last week building one, check it out now (not that it's super, but it's good) http://www.angelfire.com/rpg2/mirac I recommend angelfire, you have lots of link to other sites in which html programming is fully explained + alot of stuff to build one http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

No, of course it can host pictures. However, if you put a link on another website, say in a post on Ironworks for example, a link to a picture that is on your website, the link will not work. ANd if you try to display images on another site that are actually on your webspace on tripod, they will not show up. Hence no "external" linking. Of course, you can use pictures on your own site, which people can view if they go to your site. You CAN still give out links to images to ppl, but they cannot click on the link, they have to copy and paste it into an existing browser. It's not such a biggy....it's just annoying for people who wanna display sig pics in posts for example and the image is linked from Tripod - it won't show up.

thanks... sounds complex... I am using 50mega now, it works OK for rookies like me http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif
I just don't know one thing though, I created this newfile, and I edited in text editor, it showed up fine

but how can I combine it with "main" file? I mean, two files are completely unrelated to each other. do I need to put code in "main" such as read "newfile' ? please help, thx

Edit: nevermind, got it, thanks!!!!!

THANK YOU ALL!!!!
