In his joint speech to Congress and the American people, I thought Bush looked different...older perhaps (I think we've all aged these past couple weeks), and I thought he gave a good speech. He new exactly what he was going to say and didn't have that surprised and scared look on his face.

I agree with you. Kinda reminded me of Papa Bush..liked him too.

The best thing about the new improved model Bush is that he doesn't smirk anymore http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif. It truly was an excellent speech, gave me chills.

Now that I think about it, he does seem to look a bit older. Probably not getting a lot of sleep either. He has a lot sitting on his shoulders right now, I hope he can carry the burdon balanced.

Methinks his speech writers have been working overtime for a week.
Methinks every word was scripted. Methinks he would not have spoken if this wasn't so. (I will admit I haven't seen it yet, but after watching his performance last Tuesday I don't believe him to be the best orator in the world. He may well have put the sentiments into what was being said, but he wouldn't have 'polished' it). EDIT - Sorry, this probably sounds a bit harsher than I intended. He probably said what he wanted to, but with a bit more eloquence than if it was just him writting it. ------------------ "The old law about "an eye for an eye" leaves everybody blind." --Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. [This message has been edited by Staralfur (edited 09-21-2001).] |

He definitely is not the best speaker I've seen, far from it. However it placed emphasis on the content rather than the delivery. THe contnet was chilling, inspiring and very very bold. Some of the best aspects were the message to Islamics. Highlighting the freedom of millions of them worshiping here, that his argument was with those who pervert Islam. Very very important.
At times in his funeral speech Bush sounded like a preacher, he was preaching the word. Here he was enlightening Islamics due to consultation with Clerics here. Very good. very clever. Here's hoping it works and we don't have a "West vs Islam" confrontation. I read a piece today asking why V.O.A. isn't braodcasting the truth into Afgahnistan. The Afgahnis aren't being told that Americas sanctions are because the Taliban refuse to hand over Bin Laden. Hopefully this speech will be translated and broadcast in entirety there. ------------------ I am the walrus!.... er, no hang on.... http://www.animfactory.com/animation...ing_lg_clr.gif A fair dinkum laughing Hyena! |

Sorry, I saw the same Bush that I have always seen, and the reason I voted for him.
From my understanding he wrote or dictated the speach, speach writers had little to do with it, they may have twiked it but it was Bush. ------------------ http://www.123imagehost.com/images/b...arrissig02.gif "the memories of a man in his old age, are deeds of a man in his prime" [This message has been edited by John D Harris (edited 09-21-2001).] |
John D, I heard the same thing this evening. It was a great speech! Probably the best he ever gave. Did he shed a tear at the end? It looked to me like he did. If you like polish, then listen to Bill clinton, but to me, he never seemed genuine. Bush on the other hand isn't as good a speaker, but he seems always to be genuine.
I agree that he seems older, but name a president that didn't seem to grow much older in office. Clinton seemed to age before our eyes (or maybe he just quit dying his hair). Who's watching the telethon for the victims tonight? Alos did anyone see that the Louisana Maximum Security Prisoners raised $11,000 dollars for the victim's families! I can't belive how we have all come together here! Unbelievable three weeks ago!!! To bad it had to come at the hands of a terrorist! That S.O.B.!!! ------------------ Sir Taliesin http://www.dabros.com/images/sigs/giant.gif If they take my gun can I still use my Axe? Bush definitely looks like he has aged quite a bit since January. That has got to be one of the most high-stress jobs there is, leading a country. Thankless, too...*sigh*

Sorry, I have to agree with Staralfur here.
Maybe it's the speech teacher in me, but Bush hurts my ears. Mind you, I consider myself a Republican and a Bush supporter. But when I heard him doing press conferences earlier in the week, he was just plain awful. I wish he'd take a cue from Reagan and know what the reporter's questions were beforehand. This speech was very well-written, but to me it definitely sounded like a speech writer or two had a major role in forming the speech. I don't consider myself an authority on the subject, but I did take a graduate course studying Presidential speeches. It depends on the president. Some use speech writers extensively, some hardly at all. Reagan used them a lot. Kennedy hardly at all. I'm not sure where Bush, Jr. falls in line. I'd have to research it to know for sure. ------------------ http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/bronze.gif Most Subtle Official Straightman of the Laughing Hyenas -- Grammarian Brigade. I agree with Sir T and John D (hey they ryhmes) . He seemed genuine to me. Bill Cilton or Al Gore I dont think would have done near a good of a job Bush is doing.
He seemed Severled Pissed off.
