I said this in another thread, but I think they will probably handle it like they did Iraq. Tactical strikes at military targets. I doubt the public and the world would tolerate intentional targeting of civillian targets.

1. Identify the perp.
2. Find the perp. (This very difficult.)
3. Put him up in front of a court, like they're doing with Milosovic.
4. If found guilty, there are a number of options.

I can understand that many will find this completely unacceptable. But we HAVE to have some kind of legislative way of dealing with terrorists, human rights abusers, dictators and so on. We've made a start with Milosovic et al. For a start, the evidence has to be clearly seen by all, that the person or persons identified as the perpetrator is in fact the perpetrator. This is IMPORTANT!

If you are just going to kill everyone who the government identifies as being guilty of the crime of murder, be it mass murder, serial killing or the murder of an individual, WITHOUT trial and off the cuff, then we might as well forget that concept called civilisation right now. Proof has to be public!

Look people, if it's revenge you want - to be honest, (assuming bin Laden is the guilty party) the worst thing you can do to a man like that, who is used to absolute command, who never sleeps in the same place running two nights in a row, who is used to everyone adoring him, admiring him and hanging on his every word, is to put him in jail for the rest of his life. In fact, I would say the death penalty might seem rather tame compared to that, if you'll excuse my saying so.

Not sure about the torturing thing. So you want to adopt Saddam's methods, and the methods of others like him. No, please not! Let us not act like them! Then we become what we most hate, and all distinctions are lost. From there, it's downhill all the way, it seems to me.

Killing the perpertrators would make a martyr of them,this would just make everything worse. Also the idea of torturing someone is a sad old one that gets dragged out everytime something bad happens,it is very immature and regressive.
What the perpertrators have done is to inflict suffering and pain upon many people. To torture anyone would to be doing the same thing on a smaller scale. To imprison them is the only option as it go's some way towards neutering their status and makes them look weak and foolish.
And while it may be considered an act of war etc, the USA goverment has been supporting or wageing many wars around the world that in some cases have killed more people than in this tradgdy and have been just as evil.

Personally, I'd like to see the person behind this publicly executed to set an example, but I must agree with those of you who are saying it will make him a martyr and that they aren't afraid of death. Lock him away where the sun will never strike his face again. Do not let him out for exercise. He can pace his tiny cell for the rest of his rotten life. Let him(them)after a just sentance rot away in a prison, and get your lives back to track and show him(them) that you are not going to fall his(their) tricks. Show him(them) that the rest of th world went the other way, united and has put his(their) goals and dreams in a bag and tossed it over the shoulder.

As for the Martyr aspect, I am not so sure that he would be any less of a Martyr if he was imprisoned. Seems to me that in such a situation people could rally to the name of the great hero being held by the Infidels. I doubt it would make much of a difference either way.

Whoever is found to be guilty,could not be held in prison.The other inmates would kill him/her.Solitary confinment for life would be deemed inhuman treatment.Multiple attempts to free that party would happen and cause further loss of life.What do you think the result of holding this person captive in the heart of the devil (as they would put it) would be?Do you think it would not be more motivating for someone with those belifes to continue attacks,in order to achive either his/her freedom,or at least let them die for the cause?Additionall it would seem to me cut and dried that the penialty for killing a police officer,(or ordering the death)is punishable by the death penialty.I might be wrong but I am pretty sure it is the sentance in New York.
