The president when he heard this returned to the washington area to the presidential bunker built to survive a nuclear attack. Any thoughts on this?

First - do we believe that he's really in Washington? I'd have thought he'd be on AF1 tooling around at high altitude. Second - if he IS, bravo for returning to the scene of the crime, but - COWARD for hiding in a bunker. No one else got to hide in a bunker!!!!

It was announced just now that President Bush will not be returning to Washington.
His location when Air-Force One lands will not be disclosed.

That is not to say though that he did not actually head for the presidential bunker in D.C. God knows he can be safe there...screw us who are left above ground.

I'm digging the bunker for my teddy bear (his name is Furball and aspires to be part of the Ironworks http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/nibble6.gif ) right now! And I'm all the way in England where the grass is always green (why did I say that)?

it's not exactly cowardice that the president and the rest of the top government officials go into hiding. without them being safe we're a country with no governing body, which is a far more dangerous thing than anything that's happened thus far.

Avatar, just my 2c, this is NOT the time to be making politically-sensitive jokes. This is the third anti-Bush joke I've read from you. Your timing may be a bit off and I don't want you to end up getting flamed by others as a result.

You're absolutely entitled to express your opinion - we don't censor any of that here. But show a bit of tact. Leave the anti-Bush rhetoric for when people have calmed down and can respond to you rationally. It's just commonsense, I don't want you inflaming people here, ok?

In reality the President boarded AF1 and after that No one not involved with national security knows where he went. It only makes sense for the HEAD of a nation to go somewhere safe and well connected to all the communications devices available, there is no way he can help the nation take steps to recover and to get things under control if he does not go to a SECURE command center. It is a sure sign of ignorance of the realities of life if you think it is a sign of HIS or any of congresses cowardice to be in secure locations. I might ad that both the house and senate were evacuated and moved to secure fascilities before the prez even boarded AF1....I live in the DC area, and I have been associated with security issues in the past, things have been handled with a remarkable efficiency so far. so get off the prsidents back please. NOW is not the time for petty political potshots.

I don't want to get into a big arguement here, but they are not going into hiding. They are going to secure locations so they can handle the situation. The word Hiding implies a lack of intention to handle the problem. Why are they "hiding"? I would say because they would be prime candidates for terrorist attacks, and if we are going to respond to this attack, they need to be alive to lead the country.

This whole thread is a moot point anyways, because as Moni said, nobody knows where they are going to. The Secret Service wouldn't disclose that information.

Seriously, this is a time for us all to stand together against terrorist activity, not a time for us to pick apart our government and complain about why we don't like our president.

If anyone else were in charge, I would not be nearly as worried about what is to come of this but I'll attempt as well to hold my tongue about the man and how I feel about his leadership. I would rather be suprised by strong leadership than to see the fruition of what I can think he would do.

for my fav. Daily Telegraph (no writing but millions of colour pics)
for lefty Guardian (haha stocks go down)
for central Times (simple planes crahes...blah) very factual
for the tabloids which I love burning for warmth (Prince William....blah) they don't care about world news.

I apologize. I was way off base, but I just got so MAD at the thought that these terrorists (or whoever) could be planning even MORE destruction and there isn't anywhere any of US can go to be safe. We just have to sit here and hope noone bombs us. I know it's important for our government heads to be safe to try to figure out what to do. I don't blame him for that, really, I was just so distraught and needed to vent. I, in reality, voted for Bush and have been upset that everyone else bashes him all the time. I just got overwhelmed with the idea of them safe while everyone else falls under the category of "acceptable losses". I frustrated and scared. Bad combination for me, makes me go to pieces....sorry.

I don't think you need to apologise at all. I hate the fact that the average person is less important than others. But it is reality we face every day. We are all not expendable. I care as much about your life as I care about my wife as I care about every person in this country. We are all as important as Mr. Bush...never, ever forget that!

I would also like to stress that this situation has caused a lot of tension that has a high chance of explosion. Offhand remarks due to emotions are bound to happen. Look, nobody is saying people can't make cheap shots against Bush or whatever. We all have our political leanings. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif I won't censor anything people say, you're entitled to make your statements! It's a good idea to lighten up some of the tension with humor and flippancy. But I just think from a commonsense point of view, that maybe we might all show a bit of tact, knowing that some people feel strongly about certain issues at this emotionally-charged time. Just like you wouldn't joke about a deceased person's bad habits at their funeral. You might do it at the pub when you're all having a beer and trying to cheer yourselves up. It's a question of tact, fellow board members (saying this as a fellow member not a mod). http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

The purpose of terrorism is to cause political unrest, right? Look at what we're doing here. Political unrest is exactly what's happening. In a time when the entire United States (and for that matter, the world)should be pulling together against terrorism, we aren't; and do you know why? Because of political disagreements. We are criticizing our leadership before they have even done anything yet!! Lets give them the benifit of the doubt and judge after the fact. If you ask me, Bush Sr. didn't do too bad in the gulf, so maybe his son will do ok now. Colin Powell is flying back from Peru to help, and he's a man I completely trust as someone with no personal agenda.

I know we all have our beliefs and nobody is asking them to be changed or stifled. All I'm saying, is that it was AMERICA that was attacked, not just New York, not just Washington, but our whole country. I am on the other side of the continent, yet I was attacked too. Lets just make sure that all the attacking is coming from the outside.

I agree with you about having Mr. Powell here.

I am not against stifling my opinions out of respect for others. Its OK.
I felt the attack myself...I broke down and cried in my dentist's office in front of all the other people there watching the initial coverage. My dentist and his assistant held me and hugged me and offered me support.

I have a family member still unaccounted for in Washington DC. My first and favorite nephew, a man who twenty years ago I was a nanny to for two years...I potty trained him, taught him how to speak properly, I taught him how to read and write, among other things. I am his "Aunt Mick" and we love each other as much as is possible for a motherly figure and the figurative son that he is to me.

Even though I am not in the center of the destruction, it should not be thought that I have no heart or do not care or have any feelings about it because I refuse to allow grief to consume me right now. Maybe later I'll cry more, but for right now, I feel strong, I have faith in the people on the scenes who are there to help the injured. I have faith in my fellow countrymen to carry us all through this so that we can all live again.

Addressing the blood...people are literally lined up in the streets outside of NY hospitals waiting to give blood. Its awesome! I'm going to go down to the local red cross myself tomorrow(day off) and donate. Already called my congressmans office to find out where to send money to help with costs.

[I]Somehow this post was the beginning of something that screwed up this thread completely (it showed up in code with everyone's posts combined and garbled on this end) so I deleted it and am reposting what I had earlier so that my words to MajiK do not go unheard.

Moni, I don't fault you for not being able to donate, it is not your fault that you are anemic.

What I ment by you are old enough to know better, is that (in my opinion which admittedly doesnt count for much) You should not be taking cheap shots at any of our leadership in this time of grief and crisis and egging on a juvenile person to do the same. Sorry if that was not your intent, but being here very close to the pentagon, Im not in much of a mood to make fine distinctions of "humor" for people joking about the deaths of my friends and countrymen.

No it was not my intent to egg on any jokes, just to point out that Avatar, has a point in that we all need to lighten up a little. Your opinion accounts for quite a bit. I did not realize how close you are to the situation. Rest easy knowing that as much disdain as I may hold for our country's leader, I am being careful about what I say and that you and your friends and family are not going without my heartfelt support during this crisis.

I don't think any jokes made were at the expense of your friends and family or any victims for that matter and I apologize that you have been hurt not just by the tragedies that occured today, but by what you have read here as well.

I do love you and out of respect for you, I will be more careful about what I say about Mr. Bush.

Yeah. Too bad it took something so senseless and sad to bring me out and start me posting. Glad to be here nonetheless. *Smiling sadly*
