Can anyone help me with this.

What is the missing number in this sequence and why?

1,7,11,27,?,107

the missing number is 51, the sequence is (x2)+5 and (x2)-3 for alternate numbers

thus

(1 x 2) + 5 = 7
(7 x 2) - 3 = 11
(11 x 2) + 5 = 27
(27 x 2) - 3 = 51
(51 x 2) + 5 = 107

Very good SirT. I'm usually good at these but this one had me stumped. I was looking at Base 8, base 9, base 12, periodic table and roman numerals.

Remember series are deceptive. There can be a huge number of potential answers.
Although this one gives the previous and after number, there still leaves many possibilities....

I was sure I posted the answer yesterday. It must have got lost somewhere.

It's to do with the number of syllables in numbers.

One - 1
seven - 2
eleven - 3
twenty seven - 4
seventy seven - 5
one hundred and seven - 6

I told her that I thought your answer was far more elegant.

No I didn't, I didn't even tell her that it was your answer. I took all of the credit myself. Well, I have to impress her somehow. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Yep same as adding 6 then 4, then 16 then 14, then 66, then 64
Not very good, but not different to Sir_Tainly!! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

That is cheap. You could take two hundred and seven for 6 syllables or one hundred and five for 5 syllables. Sir Tainly's is a lot more elegant. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/tongue.gifhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/tongue.gif

Apparently these are the lowest numbers to have the said number
of syllables.
