Moni 09-04-2001 07:11 PM

In P.E. today we had to run 1.5 miles, or at least walk it...I ran half and walked half, switching off ever 1/8th of a mile and making sure I actaully ran at least half of it. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I haven't run anywhere near a mile in over twenty years and the only reason I did then was because I was being chased by a lightning storm! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...s/biglaugh.gif

I'm really proud, being a heavy smoker and having one of my lungs half collapsed (which I really felt about halfway through).
I won't say I wasn't ready to choke up the other lung when I was finished either but I finished & before some women at least ten years my junior thinking before we even started that I'd be dead last!

Sorly enough that is what happens when you smoke. Had a grandma that couldn't stop
even when she had to go onto oxigen from smoking to much. Just hope the other one doesn't collapse in your next run.

Ouch!
I should probably explain that it is not collapsed because of smoking...it was punctured with one or more broken rib fragments while it was full of fluid (pneumonia) when I got my chest crushed in an automobile accident.
(It opens up with an audible "pop" every once in a while and I get an oxygen high until it collapses again LOL...not today though, it just made me feel like I needed a new lung http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif )

I also have torn ligaments in my right foot...I didn't do too bad for a woman so out of shape (fifteen years out of a regular exercise routine) and pushing forty!

P.S. I had a grandmother in that same boat...sneaking smokes at the window of her hospital room while she was hooked up to an oxygen tank with emphysema. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

I am really hoping this class will give me incentive to quit...seeing what it has done to others just hasn't been convincing enough to make me not like to smoke...wanting to choke up a lung was a start. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Well done Moni, you show those young ones how it's done http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Fljotsdale 09-04-2001 08:42 PM

Um. Moni? Can't that lung be fixed? What reason is there for it to be permanently collapsed? My ex-husband had one of his collapsed on purpose for an operation, but after he healed it re-inflated with no problems, and he had had extensive lung surgery, plus the removal of parts of 3 ribs and the cutting of a major nerve. Is your lung too badly damaged, or is it the muscle tissue? Or what? Sorry to be so nosey! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Congrats Moni! You make us smokers proud http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Actually I don't know if it is just me or what, but I run about 8 miles a week (2-3 miles, 3-4 days) and I smoke 1 1/2 packs/day http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no.../hollering.gif

If I ever quit, I am frightened what potential I may have http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Anyway, if you do try to quit one day, I'll be behind you and supporting you http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

In all honesty Fljotsdale, I don't really know. I had a nearly impossible time getting any medical attention at the time the accident occured because I did not have Health Insurance and by the time I got any Dr. to see me, it was nearly a year later. I was more concerned then with getting my right kidney returned back to its proper place, thinking the lung would either heal and reopen or just remain collapsed most of the time.
I never have had the lung looked at or investigated for any further damage than was discovered initially...that it was punctured and the fluid level in it was the only thing that kept it from filling with blood (I did cough up blood clots for weeks though).
I am not overly concerned with it now since as long as I can breath out of the other one, I know I can survive. I know people with only one lung and even my younger brother is missing half of one of his due to cancer since he was 6 years old.

Moridin, LOL...you are the one who makes smokers proud! 8 miles, sheesh! Its a good thing you do smoke or you might fly! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

LoA,
Like hell I will! I doubt if I'll ever run unless it is life or death (or unless I have to in P.E.) LOL and P.E will only last through this school year...after that, I'll stick to the exercise, aerobics and weight training but run? Nah...I can walk ten or more miles with ease, no need to run when you can take your time. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

My legs (on the whole) are not the least bit sore today either...a little cramping in my calves and my right ankle is complaining a little but all in all, I came through it in a lot better shape than I had initially anticipated.

I am in pretty good shape for fifteen years of sedentary living.
I used to body build though...and do martial arts and ballet, among other things. That's one of the reasons I even lived through that wreck and is probably the only reason I can say (I found out) I am still in good shape. They measured our body fat too...I registered at 12.5 which put me in the same class as a fitness guru (LMAO) I'm just skinny. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Just remember as you get older, gravity is going to take over...if you want to be healthy as an older person, start now or at least by the time you are twenty.
When I was 17 I was walking 8 to 10 miles a day or bicycling as far. Easy exercise that pays off in the long run. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif Thank you!

I never lived in FL...I haven't even been in the state but that is not to say that the girl your brother hung out with could not be related to me somehow since that is where my grandmother's family is from and she has/had ten brothers and sisters, most of whom made the state their home, not to mention the fact that my dad spent much of his "off" time from our family in Ohio there and he has kids everywhere he has ever gone. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

When the urge to quit hits me I'll try the life savers...and sunflowers...and pistachios...and...LOL http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Her name was Monique too?! Well that is a bit intriguing isn't it!
My father passed away last year so I can't ask him how many children he has in FL...she could very well be a cousin or even a half-sister!

Indeed, I agree. I still remember the time where we ran around the Kiessee, a lake (pond) near where I live. It's 2.5 km. By the time I'd managed, I was so far behind the others that I couldn't see them anymore. I had never been to the Kiessee before and didn't know how to get back - I got lost http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/FRblush.gif. I took twice as long as anybody else. Well, sports isn't exactly my strong point http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif Nor yours I see Moni http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...s/biglaugh.gif No it is not!!! I am athletic, but not in any regard that requires extended stamina over long periods of time! I walk, I hike, I bike, I even rock-climb but these are athletic activities that allow me a physical workout without tiring me and if they do, I can always stop to rest.
