Ziroc has given us the word to start a new thread to avoid corrupting the old one. No Donut, that doesn't mean that you should take this as a "means of destroying the evidence" of past performances http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif. We all now that the "Decider" in the Rugby is this weekend, and that there are many many days of cricket to look forward too (isn't that right Memsie http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif ).

Actually Davros, it's the hole in the ground that the Lions must be wishing would swallow them up after squandering opportunity after opportunity in the Second Test. Does the phrase "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" seem appropriate? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Here's an article from Britain's prestigious Sun newspaper that I thought was very true. The comments are by England legend and famed cricket commentator David Lloyd. In it he compares the Aussies to Manchester United and England to Swinden Town. Gee, is Swindon Town really that bad? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

<font color="white">
LLOYD SALUTES WIZARDS OF OZ
By TOM MORRIS

DAVID LLOYD has hailed Australia as "far and away the best team in the world" after their thrashing of England at Edgbaston.

The crushing innings defeat inside four days came as no surprise to the former England coach.

He said: "It was predictable. It's no use bemoaning what we are and are not, saying it's all gloom and doom.

"In Test terms we are second or third in the world behind Australia and maybe South Africa but the first Test showed just how far ahead of the rest Australia are.

"This series will show us just how far we have to go to catch up."

Lloyd believes that to get anywhere near the undisputed masters during this series England "will have to play monumentally well to compete but that is no disgrace against such a great side."

"If Manchester United play Swindon Town they win because they are better. In golf Tiger Woods is the best in the world and there are some wonderful players who never get near him. It's the same in cricket with Australia."

Lloyd would not even use injuries as an excuse for England's poor showing.

He said: "It wouldn't have made any difference."

The former England opener was speaking at Bristol's county ground as he helped launch a crusade to encourage a future generation of England hopefuls to bridge the gap with the Aussies.

Hey Memmie,

So the gap is not as big as it could be then - the gap between Arsenal and Swindon would have been bigger http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif. And for good measure, we have an Aussie leading the Tour de France - is their no end to our collective sporting talents http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif (oh, and I won at golf this afternoon too - those links courses will be coming up in 5 weeks http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif ).

Hi Grojlach

What what what - NO CRICKET and RUGBY - argghhhhhh, pagans, we are dealing with pagans http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif. Seriously, I loved my all too brief visit to Holland a couple of years ago. Hey Memmie, I think perhaps a missionary tour with a few Rugby sides to Amsterdam - are you in??? We could even pop over the channel and see if Donut can beat us in a few drinking games - I think he could probably restore the tarnished British honor in that contest http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif.

Hey, I'm from England where Rugby and Cricket were invented and no-one really pays much attention to either of these sports anyway. If you were continually beating us at soccer you'd get more of a response.

Davros 07-12-2001 09:22 AM

Ho ho ho - is that the way you want to play Kinslayer http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif - well Davros can't resist rising to this bait, you have me hooked http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif.

Well the truth is we would love to have the oportunity to beat you guys at football, but unfortunately you don't seem to want to play us all that much. We did manage to beat France and Brazil last month - what are they, numbers 1 and 2 in the world at present. So what recent successes have you had against those sides so that we can do an efective comparison ROFLOLWP http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif.

here's an interesting spread bet available for tomorrow's game. It's called the Elton Jonny bet and is mainly based on the performances of Elton Flatley and Jonny Wilkinson. All the categories are named after Elton John songs.
An Elton Flatley and Jonny Wilkinson Special

THE LION KING -
25pts if the Lions win the match<
I'M STILL STANDING -
25pts if both Elton and Jonny start AND finish the match
MADE IN ENGLAND -
25pts if an English man is Man of the Match
ELTON JOHN AND KIKI DEE GEE -
25pts each Elton Jonny successful drop-goal
SATURDAY NIGHTS ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING -
25pts each sending off / 10pts each sin bin
GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK WALL -
10pts each Lions try

The spread is currently 75-80 points so I think I'll buy at 80 for £3 a point. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Going away for the weekend so I won't be able to gloat when we win.
(I actually think Aussies are still ahead for lots of small reasons, like 8 injuries).

Back on Monday to face or play the music.

Davros 07-13-2001 11:10 AM

Gee DONUT,

Think of all the GOLDEN opportunities they missed with the Elton Johnny thing http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

1) GOODBYE ENGLISH ROSE (no disrespect intended to Diana by the way, but how could you go past that title http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif ) 0.01 point per disappointed Lions supporter that walks out of Stadium Australia empty handed

2) DON'T LET THE (GOLDEN) SUN GO DOWN ON ME - 5 points for every time we manage to catch a Lions back at the rear of a ruck

3) DON'T GO BREAKIN MY HEART - 0.00001 points per disppointed Lions supporter watching the devastation back in the UK

4) SORRY SEEMS TO BE THE HARDEST WORD - 10 points for each time that Dawson says, sorry guys, I messed up again http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif

5) ROCKET MAN - 25 points for each time Joe (The Rocket) Roff waltzes through the thin red line and plants the ball over the line.

(Gee, I hope we win the game now http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif )

With a population of about 16 million and only .0001% being interested in cricket you have qualified with only 16 players. Fantastic achievement mate. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Thanks Donut,

Well I better get some sleep now - playing golf tomorrow. The good news is that Stuart O'Grady still leads the Tour de France, and Jarrod Moseley (local Mandurah boy) is doing well in the Scottish Open. Talk to you tomorrow - oh, that's right, you don't post on the weekends. That's you and Staraflur who both say you won't be about tomorrow. What's the betting that if the lions win, I find you both sitting right here on this thread waiting fo me and Memmsie to show http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif.

I'm in HEAVEN - I just watched the big match. Being in an Aussie Rules state, we didn't get it televised live - about an hour and a half delay http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif so I had to stay away from all the news sources that could have spoilt it for me.

So, 6 points up and the hooter goes. The Lions have the ball (ULP), and then Gordon Bray screams OVERLAP - Davros screams NOOOOOOOOO, GET HIM SOMEONE!!! Fortunately all ends well for the Antipodean World Champions.

Phew, I think I need a smoke after all that http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif.

So to all my British pals - DONUT, PSYCADELLIC BUTTERFLY, STARAFLUR - don't be shy lads, step forward and tell us all what you thought of the match http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS.... Oh sorry just celebrating a great two days of Australian sport. We beat the Kiwis in the league, as if there's was ever any doubt that would happen, then we beat the Lions in the rugby. But in all fairness to our friends in the northern hemisphere the Lions played one hell of a good game but were just beaten by a better side on the day.

------------------
Know thy enemy and know thyself and you will never be defeated in a hundred battles.

Memnoch 07-14-2001 11:19 AM

It was quite an outstanding game. The Lions would have beaten any other team in the world. Australia's composure in the last 15 minutes was just incredible. And we did it without Steve Larkham, too! I couldn't hear anything in the last 5 minutes.

------------------
http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/memnochsig.gif

Davros 07-14-2001 11:21 AM

Thanks for that Memmie - I have made comment before in the first thread about the contrasting sportsmanship of their impressive skipper Mr Johnston, and the highly insufferable prat Mr Austin Healey (after the ACT game). I have to wonder if he really said all that dribble - you would hope to be able to put it down to a press beat up, but with what he has shown us on the field, he really looks like an impressive little pile of putresence. He had the gall to berate Pat Rafter's sportsmanship - then again, I don't think he has the first clue what the word means, so he is probably talking out of context http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif. Gee, don't you wish you could find what bar he is drowning his sorrows in right now - there are a few things we would probably want to say to him.
