I hate the fact that year after year, you can get a lot more for a lot less money, and that as soon as walk out of the store, what you bought is already becoming redundant. I'm envious - is that what you want to hear - IS IT????? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif.

Hell, that is the computer I have. Dell sux, they hadn't done a full install of everything when I got it, not even the resetbutton (I can't reboot it).
And man, Windows Me is just like 95/98, it just eats more ram... switch it and you'll have quite a monster http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Memnie Genie, if you haven't started yet using your new big toy, I would really really recommend you get rid of ME and install a good old W98 instead. Wish I had, when I got my new comp last year, with ME pre-installed ... http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I'm scared out Win2k will react to my computer. I hear it has issues with VIA chipsets and SoundblasterLIVE! software.

That, and installing a new OS with all the old crap I have is scary http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Memnoch 07-06-2001 10:29 AM

Just curious...why does everyone hate Windows ME so much? I read on CNET (and was told by slackerboy) that Windows 98 on a P4 will slow it down tremendously. I also read this article at www.cnet.com.

Is it really that sh!te or what?

Don't know about VIA chipsets (I have issues with them and every OS) but the SBLive is cool under 2k - Probably not worth paying for as XP is at RC1 now, but if you've got a "legal and licensed" copy I'd definately use it.

Moiraine 07-06-2001 10:39 AM

Memnie, I've got ME at home, and I find it's a multitasking OS that allows only one task at a time ! I have to reboot every time I forget to breathe slowly and try to do two things at once. I have to reboot everytime I let my comp idle for an hour and come back, even without using a screen saver or anything. I have trouble with almost anything I do, and what's worse is that, as far as I know, there isn't any patch available yet.
And, explain to me, if you can, why the 'Spider' Windows card game runs faster when I am connected to Internet ?!? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/No...ons/icon18.gif

And yes, Win2K is a much better OS, but it is more dedicated to professional environments than to personal comps. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif Though, all I have heard about it is good.

All the games I play run perfectly under Win2k (but then if they didn't I wouldn't play them!) - especially BG2. Even with the way I treat it, it is absolutely solid (couple of early driver problems though) - so much so that I even let my G/F use it http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

The Dell 8100 does not have a reset button. It has a powerbutton (which appears to work fine) and an E-button which takes you to the dell solution center software and provides online support options. if you feel the need to "reboot" try the start menu, or the Power button, As both work fine.

If you run a P4 system with win98 it will only run at 800Mhz.
besides as far as multi tasking goes, i usually have 15 - 20 things going at a time. i will often have BG2, adobe photoshop6, adobe imageready 3, 6 or 7 internet explorer windows, outlookXP and any other application which i happen to need at the time (plus the usual MSN messanger, Aim , or whatever)
If your having those troubles multitasking then i would suspect that you have something wrong with your system, and would recomend a reinstall of the os.

Memsykins... Moiraine is the voice of reason and sanity! My tech buddies all say ME is for the masochistic user... and darlin...you are anything but that!

Oh and CONGRATS! You will love the new pc! I'm not a major Dell fan either, but they are good with service (we contract w/Dell and Gateway at the Uni where I work). And I'll tell you this...improperly loaded software can happen on any system! LOL

My lovely new Gateway arrived the week before Christmas two yrs ago with a botched software install. Guess who spent her holidays after Christmas, wiping and re-configuring/reloading a 20 gig hard drive? I laugh now...but... ugh..

Anyway, ENJOY the new PC, Memsy! POWER gaming is in your grasp, BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Memnoch - nice system!!!!!

I would also recommend switching to Win2k. Yes, there were a couple of issues with the Via chipset, but they've got most of them resolved with patches, etc.

As far as gameplay goes, MS releases Critical Update packages on a monthly basis to help compatibility with programs and games. Keep your system updated, and you shouldn't have any problems. I know I don't. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Sounds like a nice computer Memnoch! But I hate Dell, they tried to rip me off last year big-time. Thats ok I like my HP.

SunSlip 07-06-2001 04:31 PM

I used to work for Dell, and I must say...
well, I thought they were a pretty good company. I'd never buy one, because I'm a build your own type of guy, but if you're not.. well... not a bad way to go.
Get rid of ME, though... good for backups, bad for game playing.
W98 is the way to go, I think... I've had W98 for a long time (first edition) and have been happy with it for everything from Unreal Tournament to Baldur's Gate to Wizards and Warriors to American McGee's Alice.
Had WAY too many horror stories at work with W2k, (uh, I get a VFAT not loading error after I installed Cossaks, what's up?) so I stick with W98 as the game player's platform of choice!

I have a funny feeling of deja-vu - Memnoch, I just answered your thread on the same subject over at Mithril Hall (Lady Nightshade's board for those who don't know). You are just gloating all over the net!!

Sounds a really good system, hope you enjoy it!

It would have cost an extra $400 (US$200) for the RAM, so I'll add it in later (from another shop that sells it for $250) if I find it too slow. I'm sure I'll find it an improvement over my Pentium Celeron 366Mhz IBM Thinkpad with 32Mb of RAM. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/noncgi/smiles/eek.gif

Grinch 07-08-2001 02:24 AM

Memnoch,
Sounds like a respectable system, advise that you get more RAM if you decide to keep Windows ME on the machine. I have played with ME and it is not too different from Win 98,but much more RAM intensive. Tried Win 2K for a while, but it lacks versatilty. Had a power outage once and could not get Win 2K to come back up, I had to install another hard drive that had Win 98 on it,do a backup and then format 2K off the disk. Win 2K was tried at my work place, but the head of my department got rid of it,said it had the worse qualities of NT and Win 98. Anyway congrats on the machine, I will stick with my home built Athlon T-Bird though http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Qrt 07-08-2001 03:16 AM

It's a pretty fast setup Memnoch (I only got an AMD 850) though I'm not sure your harddisk can keep pace, even with the fastest ATA. At these bus-speeds ultra-wide SCSI might be an option? More RAM! More RAM!!

I've heard not much good about Win ME's backwards compatibility. Your ballgame there mate. Any comments on Win XP anyone?

Your monitor (*sigh*) as I once wrote this really should be the most expensive part of your system (perhaps I'll write a small paper on that). Go for 19" or 21" of you can afford it and get a monitor from a class act company like Sony, NEC or Nokia.

Cordless mice! Cordless mice!! They are wonderful.

Ad as I said, drop the Dell mouse mat please.

Lavindathar 07-08-2001 07:41 AM

<font color="cyan">I think ME is good. My comp is faultless, and it never really has any problems.

It can be slow at times, but that is due to the fact I dont have enought RAM on my computer.
