Ok, here is what I found out -- Talked with a guy that works at the server, he actually knew this site BEFORE he came to work at readyhosting!! Cool huh!!

Ok, What happened is we are transferring 40 GIGABYTES a month, so they had to 'cap' the bandwidth. He also said we were the 2nd busiest website they host!

He said that they don't do dedicated servers, but that he would talk with his boss and see what we can work out, maybe putting banners for them up (Where I run banners on Ironworks) or something else in return for no cap.

I DO understand why the had to cap it, usually any site that has 40 gig transfer costs $500 a MONTH! (I only had to pay $200 for a YEAR) so he said he would take the cap off and talk with his boss and for me to call him back tomorrow morning. -- also said I have 400MB Log files each day!! (HOLY CRAP)!!

This is one of the BAD things about being popular.. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

So post away!! we'll see what they say tomorrow, k? If they say no, I'll just move the site to my friends.. I've backed up all the files, so I'm ready anyway. we'll see! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Well, IMO, if they were "capping" you, the least they could have done was tell you they were doing this, rather than for you (and the rest of us) to find out by being hit with it in the face. (grrrrrrrrrr)

However, it sounds like we may have a workable solution here. 40 Gigs a month...gheeeeeez!

If we did that we would lose people. I would be one of them because if it was to be paid over the net I would not be able to do that because I don't have a credit card but if it was to be mailed in then I could.

Good point, Victor. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif I am not suggesting that the contribution be mandatory, otherwise of course we would lose members, and besides, among us, some can afford it and some cannot. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I would like to know the feeling of other members about this, though, because pooling a significant number of small contributions can sum to a fair amount, and ultimately help make a significant difference.

Maybe some of us who can and are willing to do so could mail Ziroc to ask for his postal address, then mail him a small amount of cash ? I already did send cash in a letter before, and the letter was delivered allright. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Hi Moiraine,
I'm brassic at the moment (translation - 'I have no money'), and couldn't pay a regular subscription or anything, unfortunately, but may be able to prise a few quid out of my bank manager's steely grasp for a one off donation...

Moiraine!

Several of us did send donations during that two week time of no server (shudders to remember NO forums at all). And that's how we ended up HERE when we did, so it's not a bad idea.... I need to look into how another forum of mine does it. Takes voluntary donations. NO one has to tell the whole board if they donate or not and how much, all done on board in special section. Now if I can just find time to go there.... http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Being that I work for room and board, I am always broke, but I do get rewards now and then for a job well done...when one happens to come along that is monetary (sometimes they are), I'd be more than happy to share it with you!
I promise I'll send it via snail mail and not have my friend deliver it in person LOL!

I, for one, am glad to join in with the others on a small donation. It would cost quite a bit for the hint book for each of these games anyway, plus here you have a hundred people dedicated to finding your answer.

You do accept gold pieces and Bejourils, right?

I'm not suggesting this by any means, but a thought has occurred (ouch)

I wonder how many people would donate cash if it meant their graphic avatar would go up a few notches? Problematic, I know, but it seems some are obsessed with the rank. Cut down on spam, increase cash flow, irritate the old-timers...

Wulfere 06-29-2001 07:45 AM

No problem here. I would be more than willing to donate to the betterment
of the site. Credit card would be easy, but I ubnderstand that it costs to recieve the payments that way. So a money order would be the best bet. For
those outside the US you can get International Money Orders, these would be safer than sending cash. Not to mention Zman wouldn't have to get it exchanged. Perhaps you could even buy a new 60gig HD Z! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Hi Moiraine! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I checked and my other board does it this way. There is a special page for Voluntary donations. It has the address for sending a check/money order and also instructions for transferring funds using paypal. Paypal allows payment directly from a bank acount or credit card. They suggest $15/yr as the average donation, but take anything. Again, it is strictly on a voluntary basis and anyone can use the forums there. They use the donations to offset expenses and keep the number of ads and banners down.

I think Z may have to check all the legal/business ramifications, but other than that, it might be a viable solution to our problem. I mailed him the details in case he thinks it could work. In the long run, I hope to see some system in place that keeps the board up and running smoothly and doesn't cause our Webmeister any headaches of financial problems! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Hey guys. There is another solution for sending Z money, if everyone is interested. I use PayPal quite a bit for paying for Ebay auctions, but I also use it to send money back and forth to friends. It's fast, free, and easy to use. And, you can send money from either a checking/savings account or a credit card, so it would allow more flexibility...

Anyway....it's just a thought...for anyone wanting to check out more information on it, here is the link:

Just a note: In order to send the kind of money in the quantities Z may get for the board, he may want to set up a special bank account and have the paypal funds sent directly there, rather than have to authorize each transfer from his email account.

In any case, IF he chooses to do this, he will need a Premium account of his own with paypal in order to accept credit card transfers that total more than $100 in any month, as I recently found out in my personal use of the service. This does entail a small transaction fee for all transfers of any kind over a certain dollar amount, but it's minimal.

Hey Z! Bet we're throwing out way more info than you thought you'd have to deal with on a Friday morning! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Paypal sounds promising ... http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

In the meanwhile, I will send Z. some cash, but if he is willing to implement the Paypal stuff, I will be happy to contribute later that way. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

OK maybe I am ignorant of money matters (I do work at a bank http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif) but how does this paypal thing allow us to send money? Would Ziroc set it up and then give us account information and we send the money or do we send Ziroc our account/credit card info and he deducts the money? Either way I guess that would be cool, in the meantime can I just send a check?

Someone mentioned it already and I agree, that this site has helped me more than any 'cheat' book or manual ever could so a donation of at least that magnitude is in order!

You can set up an account with Paypal online. You can use either a bank account or a credit card to take the funds out of and they get transfered to the person you choose. You indicate their email address or a specific account (paypal/bank). If the other person doesn't have a paypal account they will be asked to create one and can do one of two things, electronically transfer your donation to their bank account or ask paypal to issue them a paper check by mail. This works well for those not in the US as they don't have to mess with converting currencies and can do it all by computer.

I think you may have to have credit cards 'authorized' prior to using them for transfers this way and I know you have to verify your bank info by telling paypal the dates and amounts of small transfers they make to your account to be sure it IS your account.

Thanks Cloudy!

Sounds like an OK thing for me! I guess until the time it gets set up, I will just send a regular old paper check by snail mail http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Paypal is very easy to use and is how I transfer funds to people who don't want to give me their bank account. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
