PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome for those who don't know) is a very real difficulty for many women. While I find all of these humorous, I hope no one is offended by them.

One thing I do want to say about it tho, is that just because we may be suffering from PMS it doesn't invalidate our point, whatever it may be!! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/tongue.gif
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How many women with PMS does it take to change a light bulb?

A: One. Only ONE!! And do you know WHY? Because no one else in this house knows HOW to change a light bulb! They don't even know that the bulb is BURNED OUT! They would sit in the dark for THREE DAYS before they figured it out. And, IF they figured it out, they wouldn't be able to find the light bulbs despite the fact that they've been in the SAME CUPBOARD for the past 17 YEARS! But if they did, by some miracle, actually find them 2 DAYS LATER, the chair they dragged to stand on to change the STUPID light bulb would STILL BE IN THE SAME SPOT!! AND UNDERNEATH IT WOULD BE THE WRAPPER THE STUPID @*!#$% LIGHT BULBS CAME IN! WHY? BECAUSE NO ONE EVER CARRIES OUT THE GARBAGE!! IT'S A WONDER WE HAVEN'T ALL SUFFOCATED FROM THE PILES OF GARBAGE THAT ARE 12' DEEP THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE HOUSE. THE HOUSE!! IT WOULD TAKE AN ARMY TO CLEAN THIS #@*$!#@! HOUSE!

I'm sorry...what did you ask me?

If I may point this out:
With a proper diet and a check on hormone levels, women don't have to suffer as seriously as some do. It is not necessary for women to suffer this in extremes.

I get mood swings maybe once or twice a year. I recognize when I do because it is so out of the ordinary for me to be irritated at little things. I take time to think (normally lol) about how I am going to react to anything that irks me.
I haven't had cramps but maybe half a dozen times (very mild cases) in over twenty years.
The men in my life would never even know it was "that time" for me if not for the tell tale sign of wrappers in the bathroom trash.
They have all loved me for it. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

For women who do suffer, I would recommend a change in diet...less chemically charged foods for starters. Iron and B-vitamin rich foods also lessen the effects.

Sorry to disappoint you Moni but that is just not true. In my experience as a GP and later as a Psychiatrist and from my reading of the research my conclusions are

1/. The emotional component of PMT does not respond to dietary treatment, and it is very difficult to treat when it is severe.
2/. Other psychitric conditions are derfinitely made worse by PMT
3/. The cognitiver effects ie memory problems, not being able to make decisions as easily etc do definitely exist and they also dont respond well to simple measures.

A little irritability is not a major problem, and yes I DO see the funny side of these posts http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif Been there, done that, poured the dishwashing liquid over husband http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif (and GOD it felt good!)

However there is a tendancy for women with severe PMT to be treated as if it is somehow their own fault, or it is just a joke. I would be sorry if this thread added to this.

Thanks for that post Kiwi, I could not have provided such complete medical evidence as you did, but I did think there was something not wholly true in that post... Monitoring your dietary habits doesn't work for in all cases and for all symptoms, and this is not only true of PMT but also of many other less accepted/examined illnesses.

Also, like Cloudy says as well, we mustn't lose sight off the fact that PMS can be a serious problem for some women... personally I have a thick hide and I think it's a funny thread, but only as long as it is funny/tongue-in-cheek, not when it results in insulting without understanding.

I have tried most things, diet, included. For me,at least, that didn't help. One thing that did (mainly for cramping) was extra calcium intake ahead of time. That helps a little bit. Hard to be in good mood when in pain! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif But as kiwidoc mentioned, the irritability and moodshifts were uneffected by diet/vitamins.

My apologies if my response offended anyone.
I know what works for me.
When I do suffer symptoms it is because of dietary insuffencies (sp?).
I fully understand that not all human bodies function the same and may not respond in a like manner to the same treatment.
I do believe however that diet makes all the difference in maintaining good physical and mental health.
It is a foundation.
There are variables in how people allow themselves to react to emotional situations nad how easily (or not) their bodies take in certain nutrients.

Just so you know, I thought the jokes were funny myself but I do feel for women who can't (or won't try to) control what their bodies subject to on a monthly basis.

Stepping back to avoid any further conflict...this is just my opinion from experience and I have sisters who suffer on a severe level but then too, they don't take care of their health and are emotional wrecks.

Great thread Bilqis! This subject, like many others is funny the stereotype itself is so outlandish, not because the root situation is humorous...
Having lived with severe depression since my early teens, I could easily become overly sensitive to anything dealing with mental health or emotional instability, but I recognize the value of humor in helping to keep your perspective. For example, spending the first half hour of your day with a pistol in your mouth trying to decide whether it's worth the energy to pull the trigger is definitely NOT funny. However, I can now joke about it, and that helps me to deal with it.
In any event, my way of dealing with PMS is to simply accept the fact that it's "my fault" for a week or so, and my wife agrees! Hehe.

Moridin 06-20-2001 12:22 PM

Two things did help my wife 'control' her PMS

A change in diet
And Multi-vitamins

The only way I can tell now that it is that time is when she sends me to the store for tampons http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif (of course this is now obsolete since she moved out http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif)

Moni - a couple of quotes from your latest post

There are variables in how people allow themselves to react to emotional situations

I do feel for women who can't (or won't try to) control what their bodies subject to on a monthly basis.

Sorry but this is exactly what I was talking about - making people feel that it is their own fault. The thing about losing control over your thinking processes and emotions is that you DO lose control.

I hope this doesnt feel like an attack. It isnt meant to be. Moni I know it is really hard to understand this if you haven't been there, especially if you have been able to make changes in yourself. Sometimes people just CANT help themselves. The more we find out about the human body the more we realise that lots of problems that were previously thought to be hysteria or failure to cope are genuine physical illness.

Kiwidoc and Melusine,

Thank you for your clarifications regarding your posts in response to mine.

I did not post that there in order to point a finger of fault at women for the natural effects of their cycles. It was more in an effort to offer help in lessening them.

Yes, I point a finger at my sisters but I can, they know better but get more attention if they are suffering. One of them completely feigns being lost to reality and everyone coddles her emotional outbursts...she enjoys the attention. In private with me, where she knows she can't get away with it, she portrays a very together kind of person...most of the time at least...there are periods where she gets weird and I have to call upon every ounce of patience I have...she is usually experiencing effects of her cycle during these times and asks for my understanding that she can't help it, which I do, even though I believe she can take steps toward lessening the effects. She won't...she would lose all the attention she gets from being coddled if she were to become mentally stable.

She, in no way, should be a comparison to what all women are like or that any woman would use this period of time to get more attention. I have been there and I know it couldn't be helped when I entered into it in a totally different state of body and mind that I am now.
I used to experience heavy cramps and mood swings but I also had a poor diet and was severly depressed. Having grown up with both of those aspects being prominent it could hardly be helped.

I am grateful that I took steps to ease the stress my life was filled with ( a severe change toward eating a much healthier diet and actually studying Psychology and applying more postive reactions to emotions that come to us naturally) and that in doing so, have lessened the effects of all the negative aspects in my life (not just periods).

If anyone does take my prior advice and it helps, even a little, than I have done what was intended...helping someone from suffering as much as they may otherwise.

*HUGS*

Thanks Moni http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
It is a good idea to change those things you can change. I just hope that they will come up with answers to help those poor people whose emotions come to them unnaturally. *sigh* There is still so much left for us to learn about the brain, hormones and emotions.

OK, just for the record, I have had terrible PMS since I was a kid. I understand what that is about. Nothing helps, not even prescription stuff.

Absynth, I really empathize with you. Since I was a child, I have struggled daily with chornic major depressive disorder. I know what you mean about getting up in the morning and the first decision you have to make is whether you are going to live or die that day. I know trying to explain to people that you are not just a little down, or blue, or sad, but rather you are in a black hole you cannot climb out ot. I know the fear, that even when you are doing well, of knowing that at any time you can crash and burn again.

BUT

I try to find the good and the humor in every situation. For me, humor is a survival strategy. I can and do make fun of myself and situations. I mean no offense ever, to anyone. But I try to not take myself too seriously, but I take other people very seriously.

This reply is NOT directed to anyone (except the part for Absynth), just wanted to share my views no matter how warped they may be.

Ladies, it is a privilege to know each and every one of you. I really do mean that.

Hey Reeka, thank you.
A couple of other thoughts on this, and I hope I'm not diluting Bilqis intent on this thread, (if I am, Bilqis, let me know and I'll restart another thread)
I feel that sometimes our overly P.C. sensitivities can get in the way of some tough lessons.
One lesson is that no matter what we want to think about ourselves, we aren't perfect, and to try to hold ourselves to some magazine-ideal standard is really sad and debilitating. In my experience with depression, i've found a considerable amount of social stigma attached to any kind of mental condition.
For example, I read some letters to the editor in a People magazine from women who were angry at an article concerning some starlets recent birth experience. They took offense to a line which read in part "Postpartum depression was not an option for Miss so-and-so". The general point was that women who suffer from PPD were not choosing the condition, and to present it as a chosen situation was extremely callus. It also reinforced the notion that if you have an episode of depression, then there is something "wrong" with you, as the really cool people, i.e. Miss so-and-so, don't have to deal with it. I think that contributes to people wanting to deny that they have problems which could be alleviated with help.
The other lesson is that it is okay to pull this stuff out into the light and examine it and understand it. And often, part of that understanding is to laugh at it. Not in a derogatory way, but as a way to take the fear away and cut the monster down to size.
Ummm, I think i'm getting a case of babble-itis, so I'm going to bail for a bit and get some work done.
Thanks for listening.

Wow Reeka, that's terrible! I really feel for you http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif
I really recognise what you say about humour being a way to survive/endure...that's maybe why I was being a little insensitive in my first post on this thread.
I said that I thought all women here could handle these jokes, but that is because I myself respond in that way...I make jokes on my pains and thus I lighten them. I should have thought of the fact that not everybody responds in that same way...

Actually, Mel, I was agreeing with you. You know what I mean of trying to see the humor in your situation and not take yourself too seriously.

No need of sympathy here (though it is appreciated), I manage, sometimes better sometimes less, but the important thing is I am still here.

Thanks!
Mel

Absynthe, don't worry about it. I am happy that everyone is able to discuss this so openly and with kindness toward each other. I posted those PMS jokes because I think they are funny, and like Reeka, I believe that if we can laugh at ourselves we can often lighten the load of our concerns. Sharing those laughs with others can be fun for everyone. That was my hope.

So, don't worry about off-topic. This has all been very valid and interesting.

Reeka, I know you agreed, but I was afraid that others had a different approach than us and would be hurt.
And I can't help but feel sympathetic http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I am sorry if I seemed ot object to the jokes. I don't - humour is a wpnderful thing. I just got a bit worried about things that implied that having PMS is your own fault and makes you an inferior person.

Hell I have had atrociuos PMS with my Cluster Headaches and there is NOTHING inferior about me http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Not even my sense of modesty which is amazing http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Kiwi, understand totally what you mean. Same thing with depression, some people act like it is your fault. If you were stronger, you need to buck up, everybody feels this way sometimes, get a hold of yourself. I've heard them all.

You were right to point out that it is serious. That needs to be remembered as well as the ability to find the humor.

You are right, a balanced approach is best.

Thanks, Kiwi!
