Fellow members: the language on the General Discussions forum as of late has become deplorable. Everyone seems to be trying to "push the envelope" as far as they can as far as using off-color language goes. While some "colorful metaphors" are allowed, I think Ziroc has made his position on this perfectly clear. Ziroc has closed and deleted threads before that used foul or profane language.

As a general rule of thumb, these type of terms are to be AVOIDED when posting:

1) The f-word. I think everyone knows what I mean on this one.
2) Any blatant sexual or pornographic terms or phrases, including scatology.
3) Racist, sexist, or other hate-oriented terms.

PLEASE edit yourselves, guys! This forum is ONLY as good as you allow it to be. Even if you're angry, put in asterisks if you feel the need to "sound off". Believe me, the recipient will "get the message." This isn't private e-mail. We do have kids reading this forum.

To summarize: Ironworks is NOT the great cosmic TOILET. Stop treating it as such!

Thanks,

That will need to be addressed by Memnoch or Ziroc. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about it. **SIGH**

Sazerac I whole heartedly second your posts. Because I specialise in innuendo some people may think I am a hypocrite saying this. However I never post anything other than a double entendre and never use specific images or language. If you are responding to me, I would appreciate it if you keep to the same limits.

I "run" a few bars, and also mod and admin on some boards. I always come down heavily on anything that cannot be read by a 12 year old, and also on anything that is personally offensive. This might not be that obviuos as I tend to use humour to control the punters. So please no anti gay jokes, no rape jokes, and my pet hate - no mental illness jokes.

Sazerac 06-16-2001 12:48 AM

Thanks, Kiwidoc, for your support.

I have just finished cleaning up the "Collar" thread. Jabidas, there are still some rather compromising statements in your posts in that thread. I would suggest that you clean them up quite a bit and remove some of the offending material, including the slurs against Charlie. For the sake of the integrity of Wendy/LadyZekke's "adventure", I am NOT deleting those posts yet, but I will if those offending statements aren't "cleaned up".

There is nothing wrong with good-natured bantering, "double-entendres" and the like. The problem is when it strays beyond the pall of what any rational person would consider to be "good taste." We're all intelligent people here. I know there are cultural differences, but please do keep other's sensibilities in mind. We are a community here, not a "private" network.

Okay, I'm taking a break for a while. I'll be back on a little later before I head to bed.

Sazerac, thank you for saying that. I've been worried about this too. I think what I'm going to do is start suspending accounts for 2 weeks at a time when people do it excessively.. This must STOP! Stop being excessive, and used as common as the word "The" or something. If you can't talk without cussing, I don't want you posting here, period. It makes the forums look like some trashy place, and that's not what Ironworks is..

So those of you that HAVE offended this policy (You know who you are), take notice, I'm gonna start suspending accounts at 2 weeks at a time for people that keep it up.

Now stuff like 'damn' 'hell' and stuff are fine, and even sh** or in EXTREME cases other words when the situation warrants, but not as common speak.

It is unfortunate that some people have to resort to off-color language in their posts. It is rarely, if ever, necessary to use such language. If there are those who cannot or will not refrain from such word usage, then a mandated break for them to consider their actions is warranted.

You have my support in this matter.

If it's not too much of a problem, could we have a list of the words that are NOT allowed? It's just that sometimes you are unsure whether a word is allowed, like the ones Caleb mentioned.

Neb, any language that you would not use in mixed public company. This is all about commonsense and maturity which I hope most people would have. The type of language you would not use regularly in a professional work environment.

This is not so much about using a profane word once or twice, but about people using them over and over and OVER again. This is when it begins to become a problem.

Exactly what Memnoch said. I can't imagine that it will be a problem for anyone here to distinguish between language that is ok and language which cannot be tolerated.

BTW I just read the whole thread and I am wondering....is/was there a problem with the Magical Collar thread? I hadn't seen that one so far and I just posted in it without reading the entire thing...

Sazerac, I know I am being picky here, but I have noticed the term 'beyond the pall' several times so it is not a typo!

The phrase is 'beyond the pale'

The 'pale' (made of palings) was a fence surrounding something to keep what was inside safe. To go 'beyond the pale' was to go into dangerous territory. (This can be found specifically in Irish history). Hence the modern usage of the term.

Sorry to be so picky, but it irritates me hugely! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/tongue.gif

Anyway, this post will also serve as a BUMP!

IT all happened during my sleep period http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif but Charlie is also the name of an IW member too, so some people must have thought you were commenting about him

OK, that's enough. Do you realize which post you guys are starting to flame each other on? Or do you think that Saz types these notes out for no reason? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/mad111.gif

Cavern sniffer, the language you used at the BG2 Bar thread was not acceptable under ANY circumstances - even if you are defending a friend. Please don't direct any of that type of language to anyone here, censored or otherwise.

Jabidas, when people are baiting you or flaming you, try not to rise to it. There is more courage displayed and respect earned in not responding than in responding.

It's not about who can get the last word in. I will have the last word on this. I've had enough of all this, children, so quit it!
