Before I leave ::sigh:: I forgot I wanted to post this pic of my neighbor's Magnolia tree. It is over 40 years old at least and when I took this pic (although you can't tell for the brightness of the sunlight) it was in full bloom from top to bottom.

Have any of you ever seen anything (knowing Magnolia blossoms and their fragrance) this magnificent?

Nicely proportioned tree! Yes, we have them around...I don't, they are very messy when those purrrty flowers fall, but they sure are gorgeous in bloom. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

IM-pressive!

I love magnolias myself...would have to, just about, raised in the Deep South. There are places in Louisiana where it is illegal to cut down a magnolia tree without special dispensation from the local government. People feel VERY strongly about those trees! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I love it when trees bloom up here! Unfortunately I don't think I have ever seen a Magnolia tree before http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

Right now we are getting 'winter' in June. We have three gigantic Cottonwood trees accross the street from our parking lot at work and when the wind blows it fills the lot with 'fluff', really looks like it is snowing http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

They are very lucky to have that growing in their garden, it's supposed to be good Feng Shui if the angel is positioned correctly. A tree in bad places in a different thing - but forget the theories: that thing is simply beautiful!http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

What a breath-taking photo Moni. Thanks so much for sharing it. I just love magnolias. We have quite a few here in Nashville and I love when they are in bloom.

CLoudy,
Lucky you!!! We have another one next door on the other side that no one takes care of. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif I water it now and then but it is still scrawny for being as old as it is. We just planted two in our backyard this spring. Babies from the looks of them LOL but they bloomed and filled our backyard with their lovely aroma for quite some time. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif For all that beauty, I don't mind the stuff that falls.

Saz,
That's cool! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Moridin,
My grandmother in AZ lived in a senior's mobile home park some years back and they had cottonwoods everywhere...I remember the snow effect LOL! Is actually pretty cool! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Yorick,
You're Very Welcome!
http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Wah,
Isn't it? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
Well I sure hope that we placed ours in good places! We walked around the yard and found places that felt right...where the trees have plenty of room to grow and where their scents will be accessible to the deck we are going to build...one on each side of the deck but far enough away to grow. I'd have to have a professional come see if it is all feng shui proper though because there are other trees back there as well. They look good though! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Lady Avalon,
You're welcome! I had never seen them until I moved here to Texas two years ago...I am in love LOL! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

DawnChaser,
http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Counterpoint,
No I haven't checked yet but hopefully if the colony gets too large, some of the elves can move into the ones in my yard. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif You'll have to come visit.

I kinda miss those trees here... they are EVERYWHERE in the DC metro area... alas - the real flowering trees are east and south! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Lucky you to have them so near! (Used to have one outside my bedroom window... loved it!)

Outside your bedroom window!
That must have been heaven!
I am planting a blooming Star Jasmine under grandpa's bedroom window tomorrow.
It is only about two 1/2 feet tall but has 5 or 6 branches coming out from it that are covered with blossoms. Right now, I get to enjoy it while it sits on the porch waiting...tomorrow, it is all for his pleasure. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I'm thinking about putting some honeysuckle under his other window which is around the corner of the house but I don't want to overwhelm him so I am still just considering it. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif He does not like change much and just within the last couple of weeks, I have painted his awnings, moved the dining room around, hung drapes in his room and told him we are putting an oven in the kitchen!

(funny thing about him not liking change though is that when Rex or his parents do it, he throws a fit but when I do it, its all OK. I don't do anything differently than they would either! I think that is because I, myself, was an abrupt change in his routine when I came here...one he could not keep from happening or make anyone take back and then he sees that all I do makes everything around him better and for whatever reason, as long as I make the changes around here, its fine.) http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I'm sure that whatever makes you happy will in turn be comforting for himhttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif. maybe its because you're 'you' - our Moni, the woman who has at least ten green fingers and a pair of wonder-gro gloves treasured somewhere.http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/ponder.gif

It's good to change for a while, I tore down everything in my bedroom a while ago and figured out that the blue shade was giving me depressions often.

I started do my own redecorating and bought several rolls of the "dragon-phoenix" wallpaper and then managed to redo the entire room, it was really fun as wellhttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif. Not to mention that I slept more (forget I said that!)

Anyway, I felt lucky today after what you said, and I planted a little orange pip beside dad's usual carrots and potatoes.

Who knows?
Perhaps I'll get lucky after all!http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Wah, your room sounds cool! Glad to hear you figured out what what giving you depressions! For me, here, it is the dark paneled walls and lack of light that can protrude through all the foliage and trees outside...it is like living in a cave with all the luxeries of the modern world. I keep doors open to the screens and curtains open as wide as I can open them all day long LOL...it helps until I get the courage to tear grandpas's wall paneling down! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

That's just too cool that you planted something today!
May it bring you luck for years to come!

Hugs!

Jafin,
You're very welcome!

I envy you and the lilacs!!! In Ohio, where I grew up, we had one in our backyard. It is a bit too hot year round for one here although I knew poeple in AZ that managed to keep them alive there. Last year we had limits on the hours we could use water during an almost drought in these here parts of Texas...I would hate myself if I planted one and then had to watch it die.

Hugs!
Moni

So what is the quality of an old Magnolia, stripped and sawed into planks?

Any opportunity to use a saw is license to use it based on the intrinsic merit of its use. Basically, my neighbors won't let me cut their trees down anymore so I need new material. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Actually, I wouldn't saw down a beautiful flowering tree. In fact I don't even own a chainsaw http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/disgust.gif (onthepequod hangs his head in shame). In reality, it is a beautiful tree and an excelent picture. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
