Warning! Warning! This is a public service announcement!

News Bulletin:

Two days ago the woman sometimes known as Cloudy was spotted in a plant nursery in Northern New York! Eye witness accounts say she was feverish and glassy eyed as she ran from shrub to tree to perennial, reading tags, sniffing flowers, and touching leaves. One witness says the deranged garden-crazed CloudMinder towed a 3foot x 5 foot wagon behind her and tossed plants and flowers in with total abandon! If you live in the area, plan a trip to the area or have any connection whatsoever to this madwoman, be warned, she's now armed with annuals and considered dangerous! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

This has been a service of the public emergency broadcast system!

http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/admin1.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/admin2.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/admin3.gif

Teehee..I have snapdragons! Sweet and pretty and even PURPLE ones....and begonias and dianthus (pinks) and salvia of a red/white striped variety and geraniums, lots of geraniums! I have impatiens, LAVENDER ones...never seen them before, but I got my old standby pink and white ones too. Coleus! Never had it, but my other leafy choices weren't available....OH OH OH.. I have FLOWERS! *eyes start to glaze over*

Warning, warning! You are in close proximity to a Garden Fever case! Be prepared to nod frequently as she recites plant names and colors and to smile politely as she regales you with the care, sun and feeding requirements of each plant. Do not show boredom, hide your yawns! She will quizz you on those requirements! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif If you hold out long enough Cloudy will wander off into her yard, plant books in hand and sit, planning what would look good where, in what height and color and which will take sun and which need shade....etc.... and you can escape!

HAHAHHAHAHAHA...er it's late and er, I DID get flowers! TEEHEE

TEEHEE! Got me the American Horticultural Society's Encyclopedia! And all the Michael Dirr books I could get my hands on two yrs ago. Btw, Armitage's Garden Perennials is a good book!

Herb garden! Wow, that's great RD! I plan to have one someday. Still working the landscape. Went from bare clay to not bad in 4yrs but needs much more work! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif
What are you growing? Fresh thyme, oregano and chives are divine! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Oh and watch the chives, they seed EVERYHWERE! A friend of mine had a lawn full of chives! Smelled great when they mowed! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1orglaugh.gif

The darned things go to seed all over the place! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif Anyone know how to tell when they are ready to do it and harvest the seeds manually? I figured it was a container garden, Dawggie! Some say that's the best way to grow herbs! Let me know how it works, I'm really intersted in doing something with herbs next year, depending on my other efforts. Spent first few yrs working on lawn/trees/shrubs and my rugosa roses! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif Now I'm starting perennials. Had daffs and tulips already and some oriental lillies...I wish I could do this all the time..

Davros? What's the pay like? LOL Er, weeds...uh, I only pull em when I think of it! Which is usually when the weeds are bigger than the plants I want there! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1grlaugh2.gif LOL I'm sort of into laid back gardening...maybe one day I'll write a book, make a million and HIRE a weeder... teehee

Sunny, er, I mean Cloudy,
Congrats on all the new additions to your garden! Glad to hear I am not the only one planting and potting with reckless abandon! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

I am currently working on repairing and rejuvenating one of the windows in Grandpa's bedroom (on the outside of the house). I have a Star Jasmine blooming in a pot and waiting to be planted and trellised up underneath it when I finally finish and add a new screen so that he can open his window and enjoy the scent. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Rex's Grandma on his dad's side gave me and asparagus fern in a pot which I hung on the porch, next to the asparagus lace that grows under Grandpa's TV room window. I put that stuff on a couple of trellises after re-doing that window already. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

She also gave me some potted reddish purple petunias which I hung on the opposite side of the porch and a potted red bougainvillea that I hung outside my own bedroom window until I get the time to plant it out there.

She gave me a variety of polka dotted plant cuttings that I have potted and growing in windows and on a new set of wire shelves that I recently added to the porch and strung wayward queen's crown vines through. Between her and Rex's mom, I have every color of calancho growing out there too.

Rex's mom bought me the Time/Life Big Book of Flower Gardening. I am using it as a guide to keep from killing things that don't like a lot of sun and saving those that do lol! I also bought myself a book on pruning in order to learn how to maintain things since in AZ all I ever had to do was prune my roses, tend my houseplants and ocassionally weed my gravel yard. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif It will come in really handy when ever I start shaping up the backyard!

My annual bed got shaded by queen's crown vines and hasn't produced more than some tall sprouts. And I was so worried that the cats would squash them all LOL! I am thinking of trying to move the plants into pots that I can place in sunny areas, but until we actually get some major renovations done in the back yard, those places are few and far between...at least where we would be able to enjoy them.

When we took the bat up north, I snagged a baby evergreen off of the edge of their parking area where it had been getting trampled. It is doing well in a pot in my yard and as it turns out is a cedar tree. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Congrats again and happy gardening!

Caleb, Azurewolf...sigh ..NO NO NO! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1orglaugh.gif

Moni: well you are a busy bee in that yard! I love the look of asparagus fern but they can be messy when they dry out and drop all their leaves...er, I think they need water...yes, I'm quite sure that's what mine was missing...er before it turned all brown...LOL! I had one in college. Needless to say, it didn't survive.

I got pruning guides last year. Do I look at them before pruning my roses, winterberries, barberries or mugo pines? Nah! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1grlaugh2.gif So far everything is thriving. The rabbits did a whole lot of free 'pruning' for me on several of my rosesbushes (all mine are low maintenance rugosas)and all but ate two of the little winterberries to the ground!(deciduous holly for anyone who isn't familiar with it!) I started the winterberry as little seedlings from our Conservation and Wildlife group 4 yrs ago. Looked so silly, planting twigs in my clay mud...sigh..but now 7 of the 10 are at least 2ft high and almost as wide and 4 have berried!!!! Nothing so pretty as those bright red berries on bare branches in the winter snow! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Gaelic, teehee! My yew shrubs get the Holly Tone next! LOL!! *far off look in the eyes, muttering about slow drip watering, CB walks off to the garden shed*

Teehee! Did you use regular grass seed and fight off the hungry birds or that fancy hydroseed style patch system they have out now? My whole lawn was originally hydroseeded. Amazing process, spraying seed/paper all over my nice bare clay lot and a month later, I had WEEDS and some nice little sparse grass. Four yrs later I am ripping out lawn in big patches and replacing frantically with shrubs, trees and planting areas for annuals/perennials! Grass grew really well, incredibly well and I hate mowing the lawn! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Hey Cloudysniffler,

I hope you keep those plants alive for longer than you managed with your Wizards and Warriors party. Hmm, wonder what the average life expectancy on those annuals are (should I go for the obvious year, or will I get better odds if I bet on 3 to 6 months - what's the spread http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...s/biglaugh.gif ).

Sigh, can't afford a weeder anymore - may have to do some myself if the rain clears tomorrow (Davros does quick rain dance and asks Cloudy for a few more showers).

LOL CloudKiller http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
Grandpa planted asparagus lace under his window years ago and it has thrived on lots of water. Since it is said to be so hard to grow, everyone was afraid to touch it and it went wild eventually, working its way behind the window awning and up into the roof.
This spring, I tore it down to the ground and let it lay there while I did all the needed repairs to the window and house behind it.
When I went to put it back up, I was reminded of what a pain it is to untangle Christmas lights LOL!
I ended up losing about half the length on each vine because of the way it wrapped around itself and strangled the middle portion of itself to death http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif but it looks like it has survived my cutting, unwinding and threading through the trellises and there is new growth which is promising. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
The asparagus fern gets plenty of water lol, I have never had one prior to now but Grandma made me promise before she gave it to me that I would put it where it would get plenty of shade and plenty of water. So far, so good. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Wow! Your winterberries sound like a delight to behold! Congratulations on your successes! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I think I will need the pruning guide, lol...for the first year I was here, everything I touched died, much to my dismay as I had been planting and potting sucessfully for many many years prior to my arrival in Texas.
It took me almost two years to bring Rex's late grandmother's only surviving houseplant, a philedendron, back to life. When I was down to the last three inches of live stem with no leaves I was ready to cry if it had died. It now has three leaves and a brand new shoot sprouting up next to it now so I am sure it will survive me LOL! It was devastating to know I could possibly kill one of the heartiest plants on the planet!

I just spent the last couple of hours re-caulking the window edges and priming the aluminum awnings that I'll be putting back up after I paint them and figure out how to construct two new braces for one that had fallen apart from neglect. I am excited to get the project finished so that I can plant that jasmine and move around to the other side of the house where my own windows are and start on a whole new set of cut-out awnings...I am thinking of road runners and maybe coyotes over there. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

I would love to add a lilac to the grounds (i.e. under my own windows lol) but I am afraid they might require more water than we are willing to put out in the summertime...they are more northern plants after all but can grow sucessfully 'round these parts. I guess I can settle for the bougainvilea, which itself will require enough water and can grow wild all over the whole side of the house whenever I get around to getting it in the ground.

http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Moni 06-03-2001 12:46 PM

Hiya Bahamut!
It all depends on the type of plants...some I water lightly twice a day (the ferns) some only once a day (most everything else), some when the soil starts to dry out, and then I have two (I forget what they are lol) that only get watered once they have completely dried out.

I let the rains take care of my aloe vera and most of the trees in the yard.

Philedendrons can grow in soil kept moist or pure water.

Best bet for any plants you don't know about but know the names of is to do a search on the internet on them...you'll usually find at least one page dedicated to how to take care of them.

If you want storms you should pray to Talos, oh wait, we aren't in the Forgotten Realms, (thank goodness we aren't, I couldn't stand being on the same world as that damn Elmunchkin for a second,) pray to Thor in that case, he's a storm-god.

Regular old grass, my dog fights off the birds (and sometimes the grass). I keep checking on it every hour or so just to see if it's done yet, LOL.

In fact, I have to go water it.

UPDATE: Grass is wet and continues to grow. Dirt less visible with each passing hour.

Maybe a passing druid cast Plant Growth on his lawn? Or maybe a cleric of the Cow God Moooooh cast Manure on it.

I water as the plants need it, Bahamut! If we get a nice steady, soaking rain, I only water my flowers in the window box on the Shed porch because they don't get the rain, but all the others do. If it's really hot and dry, I may 'deep' water things once or twice in the week. Plants in containers dry out quickly and get watered daily for the most part.

If trees and shrubs are new, they get regular deep watering once/week or every 10 days or so for their first year or two. I tend to go with pretty low maintenance and native plants so I don't do a lot of extra watering and fussing. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

For some reason, my yard seems to stall the growth as long as possible, but then launches grass so quickly it would stab into your foot if you were standing on it. In a week I'll have no worry of rain runoff in the newly seeded areas. That means two weeks total time with seed on the ground.

I think it depends on the type of grass you plant, too. Some germinates faster than others. Mine is a northern mix of types.

Cloudy and Gaelic,
I just seeded a small area of our yard with grass...I think it was less than a week ago or just a week ago. The grass pkge (Kentucky Bluegrass) says it has a ten to fourteen day germination time, however, yesterday it sprouted out of the ground and stand almost two inches tall today! With the exception of the spots where some people tromped through it the day before, it looks great! The cats can't wait for me to stop keeping it moist so that they can lounge in it...they are waiting in line LOL!

I am as green as that grass with envy, Moni!

I am using a fescue. It's a hearty and fairly uniform grass that looks great when the weeds are clear. My problem is the clay soil. I have to spread a thin layer of topsoil to achieve any results. I also make liberal use of fertilizer, but I am careful not to burn the grass with it.

Gaelic,

Best thing for that clay is a mix of types! Kentucky blue, ryegrass, and fescues! Light layer of soil/sand on top of the clay and the seed on that. Takes about 2 yrs to fill in but WHOOO! Does it fill in! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I first put clay emulsifier down, then worked it in with a hard rake, then a light layer of topsoil, then seed and fertilizer. It is doing pretty well as long as I stay disciplined about watering it. After a while I need to spray weed killer a couple of times. In the early fall I am going to de-thatch it all and reseed. That should clear many of the weeds and get it looking great for next season.

I hope.
