Moni 05-31-2001 11:30 PM

I'm sitting here at Rex's PC last night when I hear a new squeak coming from somewhere. After walking through a couple of rooms in the house, I determined that the squeak was coming from outside. Going out onto the front porch I tracked the squeak to the area behind a small cabinet where I keep my gardening tools.
It sounded like a bat but the only bats I know of that lived around here ended up being found "graveyard dead" in the neighbors yard earlier this spring.
I figured since the noise was eminating from an area on the ground, it must be a cricket with some problems or a new kind of bug I have yet to see (being fairly new here still) and let the matter go.

This morning, I went through my routine of feeding the cats and as I let them out the front door to feed the fish and bring in the paper, I saw "Tiger" throw something under my ferns and heard the squeak again. It was a bat. A baby bat.
Luckily, my cats are smart and obedient animals. I told Tiger to get away from that and he stepped away and sat back to watch as I picked it up with a paper towel. It was no bigger than my thumb and covered with mud (it had rained overnight). Poor thing looked like it was on the verge of death but I could not bring myself to put it out of its misery. I set the paper towel in a flower pot, placed it next to the trash can, and waited for Rex to get home to see if it was still alive by then, if he had the guts to kill it and throw it away.

It was still fairly alive when he got home an hour later. Rather than kill it, he talked me into trying to give it some warm milk. Lacking an eyedropper, I used the end of a Q-tip with the cotton torn off but only proceeded to get more milk in the babies nose than its mouth. It wanted it but doesn't like homogonized cow's milk lol.
While I came online to do a search on bats and try to find someplace nearby that could come get it, he tried to feed it banana which it refused.

I found a Bat Conservation Association located in Austin and called them and explained the situation. They referred me to a location in Boerne (about 60 miles north of here) that would take it in and pass it on to them.

So we made the trip to a wildlife rescue association near Boerne...easy to find and surrounded by some rather beautiful scenery (I had never seen "the hill country" before). We got to see a lot of peacocks, cranes and other types of birds in their large aviaries. They even had a dozen or so monkeys caged up near the entrance.

Anyway, as I feared, the baby did not fly into our house and fall, it was way too young, which means we have bats living in the crawl space of the roof. I found the hole where the baby had fallen out when we came home. I guess in a few months (when any other babies up ther are old enough to survive without their mothers) I will have the Austin based Bat Coinservation Association come and take them out alive.

If they won't do it for free, I wonder if Rex would mind if I just set off a fogger and hope they get out alive? I have no qualms about crawling up their to clean out any dead bodies lol, but I can't force myself to go up there knowing there many be many more than I am equipped to deal with that are alive. I know they are harmless unless they carry rabies (which I doubt they do but won't take my chances) but I have seen bats in the roof of a friends barn long ago in large numbers and getting them excited enough to fly around is frightening! Probably not, he is as much into saving creatures as I am and will no doubt give them money to save the bats. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

He nicknamed me "Snow White" long ago lol and today, when he would not kill the bat but would drive a 120 mile round trip in an attempt to save it, I labeled him Prince Charming. His parents get a kick out of watching us try to save the planet one animal at a time. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Well, for what it is worth, the baby was put in an incubator and will be fed properly http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif and then transferred to the Austin location tomorrow. I hope it lives, it had a rough night!

Moni: what a heartwarming story, luv! I'm so glad you tried to save the baby bat, and hopefully it will survive and have a good home at the conservatory.

I just lost one of my "babies" today...one of my rats, a dwarf rat that was my favorite, passed on. The poor little thing was having a series of strokes, I think, and although I know he's no longer suffering, it still hurt like h**l to lose him. Your story of the little bat has brought comfort to me, a symbol of the "Circle of Life".

Thank you, Moni, and bless you, for your wonderful heart.

To both the little bat, and to my Bernard, I place here the lyrics to one of my favorite songs by the band "Live", Lightning Crashes.

lightning crashes, a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door

lightning crashes, an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers
belongs now, to the baby down the hall

oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
i can feel it.

lightning crashes, a new mother cries
this moment she's been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pale blue colored iris, presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide, hide

oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
i can feel it.

Hi Moni! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/wavey.gif This is so like you, Moni! What a good story. I hope you keep a journal so all these wonderful stories may make it into some books in the future. We tried to save some baby squirrles in Florida a couple of years ago. They were so cute and we took pictures of them and also called around to see who would help them when our efforts were to no avail. We ended up taking them to a wildlife refuge, but they were too sick with the same thing their mommy probably died from, so said the doctor there, and they died after a few days. It was very sad and my granddaughter cried every time she thought of them for a long time afterwards. Funny how we get attached. Well, special HUGS to you for caring, http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Oh, how sad! Fancy rats are not disease-infested. Your poor mum probably has ideas of these red-eyed, snarling, feral rats the size of small dogs the way Hollywood portrays them in horror flicks. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...s/rolleyes.gif These rats are fairly small (little larger than palm-size), very fastidious, playful; sort of like big hamsters with tails (think of Boo with a tail!)

I hope you can get a rat someday. They are truly some of the most intelligent small critters out there. I guess that's why they're used in psychology experiments since they're so easily trainable.

Moni, it is wonderful to be able to help a tiny creature!
In Britain, bats are protected by law and it would be illegal to smoke them out. I assume that doesn't apply where you are! I would still advise against it though, they are lovely creatures, won't do any damage if they are in your roof and it is marvellous to watch them fly at dusk. (I take it they are not ones that could carry rabies, that is a different matter altogether).

I would let them be this year (if the conservation centre will not remove them) then after the breeding season block up any access to your roof with narrow gauge wire netting so they don't get in next year.

Moni, that was a great story! I saw a program not long aago about bats and people that were afraid and of people who cared for them. Bats are really cool and useful animals since they are real good at hunting down for example mosquitos and moths and such, though they can be a drag to have in your house! I also know that there is some kind of batnest one can builed for them if you would like to have them around that you can set up away from your home and make it a perfect place for them. Problem is still to get them to move.. hi Mr and Mrs Bat? I have a great apartmant for you here. onthepequod and Bahamut,
Thank you both very much!

Epona,
It is nice to know that in Britain, bats are protected by law. Unfortunately here in the US, people still view them as disease carrying "rodents" no better than cockroaches or river rats. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif
I will let them be at least until this year's babies are old enough to survive on their own. I don't relish the crawl space being filled with guano although I do want them around. The hole where the baby fell out is a place where water had leaked through right at the seam onto the porch and rotted out a three by 2 inch space in the wood. It would do us best to have it repaired.
We are actually scheduled to get the roof replaced soon after a freak hail storm did some damage not long ago. The insurance inspector is due to tally up the damages this afternoon. I would like to have them transferred before that happens in order to insure the workers don't kill them outright.

WOLFGIR,
We have a fish pond out front and the mosquitos can get thick if we happen to miss cleaning it before their larvae hatch. I also detest moths getting into the house and breeding in closets..ruining my nice clothing. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif It will be nice if we could get them moved to a nearby location.
I saw bat houses advertised online right alongside birdhouses...I had never thought it could be done but there they were! That would be cool if we could get them to live in the backyard rather than in the roof! As long as they don't demand central heating and air they can stay. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Hugs everyone!

Moni,

Good Job! You may not need to fog those bats out with poison. Just regular smoke will do. A lit torch of some sort waived about may help- check with animal control in your area. I know that my good friend's parents had a family of racoons move into their chimney and the wildlife people used a harmless smoke bomb to get them out. Then my friends parents had animal proof screening put on the chimney!

Cloudy

PS... Moni- look into making/buying a bat house (like a bird house!) and putting it just away from your house. Might entice them to live there instead of at our place! Bats are GREAT bug reducers. Especially mosquitos.

Moni, I hope that that little guy lives and comes back to eat all the biteing insects around your place for a long time! My Grandmother was just like you. Always takeing in orphans and wounded animals. Then nurseing them back to health and setting them free. They loved her to. So every time I would look out her window when I was small, I would ask her about every walking, flying, creeping, crawling thing I saw . To my surprise, she had a story about most of them.

Moni, loved the baby bat story! I do hope it survives! And that you manage to have the rest of 'em removed before you drown in guano, lol!

Just one tiny point, dear: Moths in general DO NOT damage clothes! There are, if I remember correctly, only 2-3 varieties of moths that damage clothing and soft furnishings (their caterpillars actually, not the moth itself) and they are so tiny you may not even notice them.

The rule for DISTINGUISHING CLOTHES MOTHS is this: If it is bigger than the little-finger-nail of a baby, IT IS NOT A CLOTHES MOTH!!

I know a lot of people are afraid of moths - I cannot imagine why, 'cos nothing is more harmless, but they are! - and want them DEAD, but PLEASE try not to kill them! Think of them as butterflies that fly at night - because that is pretty well what they are! They have (mostly) dull colours instead of bright colours, and some of 'em are fat and cuddly-looking, but if you look carefully at them you will see they are every bit as lovely as day-flying butterflies.

Sounds like my husband ! Two years ago, we had a wild cat coming at our house, at the beginning of winter. I fed him, so he kept coming. Unfortunately, he was a house cat gone wild, totally unable to retuen back to a tame life (he was really dangerous with my two cats and my kid and us), so, much to my sorrow, it was impossible to keep him. My husband at first wanted to kill him ! I said no, then he proposed to give him to the SPA (association for the protection of animals). I told him it was impossible, because there, if they don't find an owner to the cat, they kill him, so, as he was dangerous, he stood no chance. So, after MUCH grumbling, he agreed that we would feed him until the end of the winter, then take him in the car and release him 30 mile away in the forest. That we did. He was perfectly able to survive in the wild.

Lord Shield,
LMAO! You bet! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Cloudy,
more than likely, they will use ammonia bags (ammonia soaked rags in plastic bags) to encourage the bats to leave. They gave us lots of written information on how to deal with all types of native wildlife that we may have to deal with.
I will most definitely look into hanging a bat house out back. I see no harm in keeping them well fed and out yard as insect free as they can keep it. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Conan,
That is totally cool! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Fljotsdale,
I am well aware of the types of moths whose larvae damage clothing and do nothing to harm the varieties that know enough to stay outdoors. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
I'll even rescue the nicer ones if they ever happen to get indoors, which has never happened yet. I love butterflies and moths myself and would never do anything to harm them.
Rest easy friend, they are safe. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Moiraine,
sorry you had to get rid of the cat, but you can rest easy knowing that he can fare well for himself in the woods.
When I was an infant, my dad's cat had kittens and I crawled in with the babies. The mother refused to feed two of them after that and my dad raised them on eyedroppers and baby doll bottles.
They took to living in the woods up the street from our house when they got older and would come home once or twice a year to see my dad. They lived to be 12 and 15 years old and never looked liked they were hungry. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
It was pretty sad the day we last saw the older one...he was crippled with arthritis and had gone grey. He crawled home to see my dad one last time and then crawled away, back into the woods, never to be seen again.

Hugs,
Moni

Moni,

I really couldn't keep the cat. Believe me, I tried. But he was totally wild, didn't let anybody get close, bit and scratched when anybody get closer than 2m. And it wasn't a warning, mind, he did it full fight. Aimed for the eyes. And he was way bigger and more muscular than a ordinary house cat. My own cat was terrified by him. And it didn't get better after a few months. We really couldn't keep him, I was afraid for my kid. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif Anyway, we gave him anything he needed to survive. Released him in the wild at full strength in Spring.

Here in Minnesota people like bats. In fact our nature trails (within the metro area) have bat houses placed frequently alongside. FYI, bat houses look just like bird houses except the hole is in the bottom. These little structures are courtesy of the Minnesota Department for Mosquito Control.

If it weren’t for bats the Minnesotan’s existence would be dismal at best. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/disgust.gif FYI, mosquitos are considered the state bird by many.

Oh I believe you about the cat!
My sister brought home a kitten of all things from out of the woods one day.
He was the sweetest thing and loved to be petted but without warning, he would climb up our arms in a fraction of a second, clawing, scratching and biting...going for our faces in the end.
We gave him to our dad who broke him of the habit and he lived at dad's house for some 9 or ten years but we still had to be careful around him. He would not bite dad but anyone or anything else was fair game.

My present cat is a nasty piece of goods, too. I had him as a tiny, beautiful kitten from a woman I knew slightly. She kept asking me for ages how he was and was he alright, with a rather strange tone in her voice. I thought maybe the parent cat was sick and she was worried the kitten might be sick too. Not so, however. I discovered that the father cat was a truly nasty, savage animal. A stray who went for everyone and anything. This lady gave his kittens to people who had children, and said nothing!
The kitten I had was lucky. Still is, lol! I'm a pretty tolerant person and have never been afraid of cats and he knows I am the boss! Even so, I have been badly bitten and scratched from time to time. The only times I have ever hit him! I have had to. There is no way I could let him get away with that behaviour. I think practically any other owner would have got rid of him in pretty short order!
I'm kinda fond of the old b**ger, though! He IS the most beautiful cat!

That was decent of you Moni! I have bats in my backyard too, and i'm not proud to say that i'm as scared of them, as they are of me. Besides they are kinda cute! (If you look at them hard enough!)

Thanks Redblueflare! LOL Well I am frightened of them flying around my head but a helpless baby was easy to pick up! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

They really are rather cute creatures and very useful as insect control! I think more people should be better educated as to how beneficial to our environment they are!

P.S. I still have not gotten back to your story yet, I was playing with sigs while I was taking breaks and my PC up and crashed. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

Rex just got up and is in the shower, I am sure he will ask me to kindly remove my butt from his chair when he comes out lol so I am going to go check on the progress of things I have going outside, feed the animals and then tell Rex that my PC is down again. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

I should be back on here when he goes to work later. There is an hour span between him leaving and my usual bedtime. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

An Update of Sorts LOL!

Last night, when I walked Rex out to see him off to work, we both saw a HUGE bat flying around the mesquite tree in our yard! I have never seen a bat so big!! So, chances are pretty derned good that I have bats in my belfry, er I mean, in the roof of the house that I live in! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../hollering.gif

Anyway, I just remembered that and called the Bat Conservationalists in Austin and asked about the baby...The lady who would be able to give me the info on the bat is out of the office until Monday but I have her name and extension to talk personally with her about the baby and how it fared since we took it to Boerne two weeks ago!

The man I talked to is sending me information on how to perform the removal ourselves at a low cost with items we probably already have around the house and also information on where bat houses are available locally so that we can hang them before we get them out of our roof in hopes that they might stick around. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Will post more on Monday if I can get any news on the baby.

Moni - I am looking forward to an update!http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

In Maryland I had a couple of birdfeeders... well, once the birds caught on to the fact that I kept them fed... the varieties that showed up were truly incredible. I really miss that now - but I remember how the birds would show up after I refilled the feeders ... like they were waiting for me! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I love wildlife, and certainly appreciate it more now than before I became interactive with it... but isn't that always the way? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/ponder.gif

Charean,
http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif
I have two feeders in the backyard that I keep full...the birds are lined up in the mornings just waiting!

Haven't seen my squirrel friends still. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

Hoping they just found a better place to hang out although I don't see how, seeing that I hand-made them their own tiny little peanut butter sandwiches every morning!
(one sandwich cut into 6ths) http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

I miss being able to hand feed them like the family of squirrels that lived under my shed and used my back yard as their nursery in AZ.

Maybe someday it can happen again...I am hoping.

I was getting to that point.. I fed the squirrels so well, that when winter was over they were still chubby!! Poor little things could barely run! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif Once Spring really hit, and it was time for breeding, they lost the weight.. but I was worried about them getting hit by cars on the street 'cause they were so slow! LOL

My uncle has squirrels trained in his yard to come to him for food...it is really cute... he has done that for years... sometimes for a few squirrel generations... they almost get tame! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Yes, during my seven years in my house, I saw seven generations of squirrels take their first peek at the world in my backyard, and there, learn all the finer aspects of climbing and jumping around the railings of my porch.
You could actually say that the mother and one of her oldest daughters were friends with me. The males, well they liked me but something in them remained a little too wild to ever become so comfortable that they would sit with me like the girls would.

DawnChaser, LOL! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/noncgi/smiles/485.gif Too True!

Counterpoint, Oh yeah! We even have geckos and chameleons!
This year I saw more of a variety of butterflies in our yard than I have seen in ages! Most unfortunately though, the cats like to make playmates of these creatures and play just a bit too rough! This year was a hard one on the lizard population since I removed the decades of debris in which they found their safety, but alas, quite a few remain living to re-populate the grounds.
http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Here's to hoping that the cats won't like playing with elves!
I'll supply you with a weapon of choice against them just in case...dog breath spray. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
