As the subject says: which movie reminds you the most of roleplaying games?

I would say Gladiator, even though it's not really Fantasy, it's more historical. But the whole "feel" of the movie was the closest thing that I got to RPG environments. I was hoping that the D&D movie would be good, but it turned out to be the biggest piece of shit that I ever saw.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Mummy Returns though.

Labyrinth maybe.

Shadowstrider 05-18-2001 11:43 AM

I thought both of my favorite movies were. Excalibur and Braveheart.

RudeDawg 05-18-2001 11:50 AM

oooooohhhhhh good thread... (Shouldn't this be in the polls forum? *ducks the mighty hand of Memnoch* )

OK... FANTASY and FAVORITE being the key here...

Highlander or
Hawk the Slayer <---- I bet NONE of you have ever heard of this one, but it was sooo much fun.

I know what the majority is going to vote for, though. "As you Wish" http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

I'd forgotten Hawk the Slayer - that was a BLOODY good film. That makes me think RPG rather than CRPG

Throntar 05-18-2001 12:10 PM

Hmmm...good question.

I'd have to say either of the Conan movies are the closest thing to a RPG that I've seen. I'd also say the 13th Warrior, for those of you who might have seen that short-lived movie. Lastly...maybe Willow...

Memnoch, I saw Mummy Returns a couple of days ago. Very fun movie! Not much of a plot, but very entertaining with unbelievable special effects. Not quite as campy as the first one either, which is a good thing IMHO. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Melusine 05-18-2001 12:30 PM

LS, Labyrinth was great!
I haven't seen many movies that give me a real RPG feel... I mean I liked Braveheart to name just one but that has nothing to do with RPG, except that the locations could be perfect for a D&D setting. I am really biting my nails in anticipation of the first LOTR movie though! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I wold also choose Gladiator, and the Mummy Returns is awesome.. I wonder just how many CGI effects were used in THAT movie?! I wanna see Pearl Harbor the Movie.. THAT looks amazing too...

PS: Some of the Conan movies looked RPGish.. and I agree (again) http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif that the D&D movie was a complete failure, and it's too bad. I KNEW the second I saw that Waynes brother that he would be the 'comedu factor' type guy, and that ruined it. If they went with a Drizzt type story, THAT would have been good. and now, we have that one kid in Lord of the Rings (ugh), I hope to the gods it's better. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Black Knight 05-18-2001 01:21 PM

Ok, Rudedawg, I do Love Princess Bride (As you Wish **falls down hill**) but it would not be the movie that is going to have the best feel. Everyone was Human, no elves, no gnomes, no monsters ...

I am Way looking forward to the Final Fantasy movie that is coming out this summer in the states. Should be really cool. As well as the Lord of the Rings movies ...

What about the old Return of the Jedi/empire strikes back. They have a very high rating of RPG content stuff, IMHO. You might not of liked them, but you do have to conceed the whole RPG aspect.

I really like a movie called
"First Knight"
It was more of a history thing, around the time of Camelot, but I really liked the feel of it.
Gladiator was really good too, Ridley Scott did a really good job on that one. I have seen a few other films, but most sort of lose that authentic feel because of pathetic acting and lame comedy (D&D)

Clearly Willow, I wouldn't have thought of Aliens unless Wulfere had mentioned it, the Alien movies could actually resemble an Alternity adventure set in the future, so they would actually get a vote from me as well.

WOLFGIR 06-05-2001 08:18 AM

Willow, most definately, Conan, Ladyhawk! (personal favourite, after that movie, everyone wnated to threw their greatswords! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif ) Kurst (not that good a movie..) King Arthur movies (there is lot of them!) Beastmaster, Labyrinth, Star Wars nd there are alot you either forget or don´t want to remember! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

(Reading back more thoroughly, I see that RudeDawg DID mention this movie, so "Hear! Hear!" to RudeDawg! The rest of this post still stands http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif )

Here is one not previously mentioned, but it embodies the Dungeons and Dragons theme (I also LOVE LadyHawke): Hawk, the Slayer

I fist viewed it on TV, and the cast of characters seemed so much like a D&D party that it immediately jumped to mind. There is even a elven crossbow (fast shooting) wielded by an elf, a dwarf with a hammer, etc. It is a great movie.

See this, if you can. You will agree. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/noncgi/smiles/elf.gif

Aside from that lousy D&D movie?
Maybe the 13th Warrior. Anything with good fight scenes really.

------------------
Why?

TraderVixII 06-07-2001 04:41 AM

Johny Nmonic (actually loosely based on the Cyberpunk RPG) Matrix (VERY loosely based on Shadowrun & Cyberpunk {and some anime that I can't remember}).

Ninja Scroll

Nightmare on Elm st. 3 (only because of the RPG fan http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif )

D&D was a complete failure but atleast they TRIED to stick to the Basic D&D rules.

Krull (if anyones seen it {though I doubt it *L*})

Split Second (with Rudger Houwer)

Conan the Barbarian (though no other races)

Fists of the North Star (anime)

Jumpin Jack Flash (odd yes but if you think about it and compare it to RPG's theres alot of things that almost fit)

DragonSlayer (even though the "dragon" was actually a wyvern)

Blade (think Vampire: The Mascerade (sp?)

That's about all I can think of off the top of the ole' noggin
