I am doing a paper on Global Warming for an Environmental Economics class and am interested to hear your views on a few points.

To start I would like to give a little background information

The earth’s atmosphere acts as a ‘large’ greenhouse. The heat and energy of the sun after reflecting off the earth’s surface is ‘trapped’ in the atmosphere by so called greenhouse gases -- primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These gases act much in the same way as the glass panes in a greenhouse.
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased nearly 30%, methane by more than 50%, and nitrous oxide by about 15%. The result of these increases is that the average global surface temperature has risen nearly 1°F. While this may not seem like a problem, just think about how sensitive the human body is to a 1° change in temperature, the earth is no different.
Proof of global warming can be seen by the fact that 1998 was the warmest year on record (global temperatures, on some scale, have been kept since the early 1600’s). Ocean levels have risen from 4-10 inches, due to melting of polar icecaps. And, global precipitation has increased by nearly 1 inch, due to increased evaporation. These are the facts from the last century.
Looking forward to the year 2100, it is expected that the average temp will rise by another 1.6-6.3°F, ocean levels will rise by 12-16 inches and global precip will increase by another 2-4 inches. While these effects will surely have no impact on us, they will effect our children, grandchildren, and all future generations.
The survival of any species on earth is due to the ability to adapt to new conditions. Unfortunately, we are changing the earth’s conditions faster than we can adapt and it is estimated that the human race will not be able to survive the conditions on earth past the year 2250, unless drastic and absolute changes are made.

Now for my questions. These are poll type questions and the results may be used in my final paper. Thank you in advance
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?

Who do you think is the main culprit of global warming
Consumers for their unwillingness to use ‘cleaner’ products because they cost more and are less available
Automotive and Oil companies for their unwillingness to change to alternative energy
Governments for their unwillingness to introduce and enforce stricter emissions laws

Thank you everyone for your answers!
I will post the poll results at the end of the week!

Moridin doesn't the earth naturally warm up and cool down over longer periods of time? Wasn't England and Europe much warmer than it is now. Of course we had the ice age eons before as well. I'm a greenie and totally agaist pollution and rape of the earth, but I also have a longer view of the earths pulse.

The annual hole in the Ozone is a problem, but the earth warming? Tell me if I'm wrong.

So I'm not panicking. However that said:

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
yes

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
yes, no

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
Of course!

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
Solar, Wind or Hydro doesn't cause Chernobyl. Bring on Wind farms.

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
I don't own a car.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
No. There is no reason why they should charge more for alternatives they should already be using.

It all starts and ends with consumers. However we only consume what is available. The chicken or the egg?

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
- yes but we still need stunning prove this is not the result of the fact there's more solar wind

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
- Not all of it

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
- as much as possible but my parents don't

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
- for but we need to keep it save
Coz if it is save we can produce a lot of energy without hurting the earth

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
- Yeah but honestly i think a hydrogen powerd car is actually cheaper in the end

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
- yeah

Who do you think is the main culprit of global warming
Consumers for their unwillingness to use ‘cleaner’ products because they cost more and are less available
Automotive and Oil companies for their unwillingness to change to alternative energy
Governments for their unwillingness to introduce and enforce stricter emissions laws
- i think the main problem are the companies as long as they only have these products the comsumers cannot choose something else
and the goverment can't handle everything

Thank you everyone for your answers!
I will post the poll results at the end of the week!

I want to add something
A group of scandanavian scientist tested some thing and come to the conclution that global warming could be the result of increased Solorwind blowing about cosmic radiation
thus on earth lesser clouds more sunlight hits the earth
I've seen the result and they are quite convinsing

Can't exactly recall, sorry. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...les/tongue.gif

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
YES

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For

Against, the potential risk is too great, we should seek alternative source such as hydro or solar.

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
Hmmm...difficult to quantify, but the price of hybrid should drop within the next decade......hmmmm (argh!! head hurts)

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
Depends on the price of the premium, but probably yes.

Tough question, but I think stricter emission standard is a good start.

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
ideally yes

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
no

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
normally, I do, but I don't do it as a strict rule

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
No, not yet. I am against it. As a power source, it should be controled, manipulated and tamed. however, I am afraid this fire human is holding is over our limit. We have only a glimpse idea of what kind of power we are playing with. not yet, not yet.

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
I don't own a car.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
No. and I doubt it is practical, while I support the idea, I'd like to see following things:
1. use purer enegery source:

what we are using today are still not 100% pure. while this is only ideal, we can achieve a state as close to that as possible, say 99.9999%. buring this kind energy source will mostly produce CO2 only. CO2 does cause global warming, but I don't see how it becomes a problem.

2. grow more greens

they consume CO2

3. putrify the waste from industry (so only CO2 will pass into atmosphere, not SO2, and SO3, etc), making strict laws and raise tax on heavy industry producing main polution.

this mainly apply to developing countries, who are doing their best to speed up economy. they normally pay little attention to the surroundings.

4. education, education! this is the root of everything

Who do you think is the main culprit of global warming
Consumers for their unwillingness to use ‘cleaner’ products because they cost more and are less available
Automotive and Oil companies for their unwillingness to change to alternative energy
Governments for their unwillingness to introduce and enforce stricter emissions laws
they are all responsible

Hey snap - I've got work to do on this aswell (and various other ways we're not doing the planet any good).
Here's my answers - hope they help.

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
Yes. - aswell as Acid Rain (the two are closely linked), and the enviroment in general

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption).
Yes - Kyoto treaty (more specifially Pres. Bush rejecting it).
(Also had several lectures on what causes global warming and what is being done about it).

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
As much as possible

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
Better than fossil fuels, not as good as hydroelectric, wind etc... So I guess 'For' for the moment.

If against, why?

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
Never bought a car, no plans to.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
No - If alternative power is available, maybe fossil fuels etc... should be taxed.

All of them - do what's best now, not for the future. I think it sould be the responsability of the government to push things along - so I'll go for them.

The earth does naturally warm up and cool down over time, however it does so over a vastly greater amount of time than what we have seen in the past 100 years. According to geological evidence, since the last Ice Age, the earth has warmed about .25 degrees a century. Compare this to a 1 degree change in this past century and an estimated 1.6-6.3 degree change in the next century.

The destruction of the ozone layer should be a major concern, but for different reasons. Ozone acts to block UV rays from reaching the surface. UV rays do not have any effect on 'global weather' but are harmful to humans. It can damage the retinas of the eye and cause skin cancer. This is why Australia (the closest country to the 'hole in the ozone' has the highest rate of skin cancer per capita

250-- These are great points, however I would like to 'clarify' one thing (I am not trying to be an a$$hole, just educating http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif)
There is a delicate balance needed in the atmosphere to maintain a sustainable environment for species on earth. Greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, and NO2) act to 'warm' the atmosphere, while Sulphur compounds (SO2, SO3, & SO4) act to 'cool' the atmosphere. The problem right now is that too many greenhouse gases are being released into the atmosphere and it is warming up faster than the sulphur compounds can cool it down. We need to restore that balance by reducing the emission of greenhouse gases so that the natural emission of sulphur compounds can 'catch up'.

well, you are not being an A$$hole http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gifhttp://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

anyway, just one thing to point out: SO2, SO3 dont cool atmosphere.
those are very strong acid (yes Accord, stronger than flail of agies) and they dehydrate water from air around earth. that was why Rain Forest suffered so much dmg from acid rain.
when SO2 met water:
SO2 + H2O = H2SO3

this is hmm...crap, i dont know the english name
and when H2SO3 met oxyegen, it will have further reaction to form H2SO4 which is...ARRHHH someone get a dictionary http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif this thing is very damaging, and devastating. but Adminante Golems are mostly immune to it... (err.. crap, I played too much BGII)

anyway, just let you know, H2SO4 is not only acid but also poison. it can be used for making gun powders (strong one)

anyway, i am sorry for my poor vocabulary in english, i hope it helped a little

250--
You are correct, SO2 does cause acid rain, but only SO2 in the lower atmosphere. SO2 in the upper atmosphere reflects sunlight away from the earth (back into space) and therefore acts a cooling compound. So it is kind of a double bind. We do need SO2 in the upper atmosphere to keep the balance, but we need to reduce 'unnatural' emissions to lower SO2 levels in the lower atmosphere to reduce acid rain http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
Yes

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
I don't recall, although I have read several article on it on MSNBC (where I check my news). Mainly about fossil fuel consumption and the growing ozone hole over Antarctica.

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
Yes. Actually, eating less beef does as well, as reducing the cattle industry leads to reduced methane emissions from the cows. I'm not kidding. Cow flatus is over 60% methane.

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
I'm divided on this one, but I prefer alternative, safer sources of power until they have either perfected nuclear fission or come up with another method for generating nuclear power (such as cold fusion, if there is such a thing).

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
Depends on the car, but I'd be willing to pay more for one. I'm not good on pricing.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
At first, yes, until it became readily accepted. I would expect the price to drop as usage increases.

A bit of all of the above. Trouble is, as I see it, it's a vicious circle. One won't change because the others won't change. Consumers won't use more expensive, alternative energy products, so the Auto and Oil industry can't find it lucrative to switch to that, even for the long run. It's a blinkered, 'short run' mentality that causes it, IMO.

Earth will be Mars 2 within 7000 years if we continue the way we're going:

Global warming is a threat, look at what is happening to Antarctica:

http://www.cnn.com/2000/NATURE/09/29/iceberg/index.html

http://www.cnn.com/2000/NATURE/05/10....02/index.html

And check out the book called "The Coming global superstorm" by Art Bell. Talks about how it could be possible for huge weather systems will change because of cooler waterways in the Ocean.

Also, one thing about just plain old littering.. When I drive, and see people flicking their cigarette butts out their car windows, it makes me crazy.. YOU HAVE AN ASHTRAY, USE IT! ya know? Anyone here see that happening? It's like-- the whole world is their ashtray http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif and I DO smoke (which I AM quitting, its a nasty habit), and I have never flicked one out the window.. (Feels special) http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Anyway, just wanted to rant a bit, and give ya those two CNN articles about the Iceshelf.. ALSO-- just 3 weeks ago, scientists have found the LARGEST crack in the shelf of the Antarctic EVER, and predict that it will break off this year. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif

Exactly my point adam warlock!
Most people on this forum are not useful in any way, shape or form! I took a few minutes and roughly counted the number of people that have made posts in the GD forum since this thread was started. I stopped at 32! But only 9 have responded to this thread.

The reason I choose to post this survey here, rather than ask friends/family/classmates in person is b/c of the global diversity and culture differences off all of the members. But I guess people would rather spend their time answering random threads about their age/sex/race/nationality/hair color/#of body piercings/what they ate for breakfast/what color is the sky/why doesn't my 17" monitor show 19" images.....than actually post something worthwhile and helpful!!!!!

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
-----Yes, in some degree, but definatley would be taken upå more seriously with the overall issue of world environment.

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
--Yes, One about global warming and the cycles of the iceperiods mentioned global warming being hard to judge and messure.

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
----Yes, both at home and at work.

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
I´m possitive as long as we recycle the fuel that can be done in a much more safe way and better for the environment and if coldfusion will be discovered soon, well no more troubles..

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
--- Don´t use a car, to expansive, but I could be able to pay a small amount but that is not up to me but the total worlds responsibility to make faster adjustments to alternative fuels.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
---No because they are as environmentally damaging as other fossil fuels but in another way, don´t solve the problems, only pushes them to another category.

All of the above, but people are sheeps, they follow the leaders, so the companies and governments are mostly to "blame"

OK, Moridin, i fhave done my due! Good luck friend!

I would have posted sooner, but I hadn't noticed the thread. I can only suggest keeping it near the top of the page by bumping. I found this with one of my threads, each time it got sent to the top, people replied, if it fell 3/4 of the way down the first page it was ignored. Hope you get enough replies to make some good analysis.

And we wonder why the earth is polluted and f---ed up? There's one answer Moridin. I'd write about that in your paper.

I buy free range eggs. Have done for over 10 years. I took it for granted that we all cared about ending battery hen egg farming until a major activist went on T.V. crying in frustration about how she was giving up because no matter what she did, people would not pay a few cents extra for a free range egg - and this was the only way to eradicate battery farming. Go figure.

I agree Yorick, but here in the U.K we aren't talking a few pence, the supermarkets use the free range/organic etc products to slap on a huge mark up. They knew people will buy these things if they are concerned about the environment, and so they use it as a good excuse to screw customers.

e.g. a Tesco's bread loaf 15p an Organic Loaf over a £1

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
I think it should - I find it alarming that the world governments do not realize we live on a planet that has finite resources. We can only pollute our backyard so long before it is no longer habitable.

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
Actually, yes. The Discovery and Learning Channels do a great deal on how the planet is changing due to our influence... and some of the programs specifially dealt with new ways of recycling, new ways of dealing with our garbage and how we can use the enviornment (specifically wetlands) to break it down, changing weather patterns over the last century, and hydrogen powered engines.

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
I recycle everything I can. We have a wonderful program here and my trash/recycle ratio is usually 1 part trash/3 parts recycle material

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
I am for fission - when it is viable. I do not like fusion because of the waste it produces and because it can be way too dangerous for us to deal successfully with.

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
I would gladly pay more for a hybrid or an alternative... if it could do what I do presently (long distance). Money really isn't an issue for me.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
Yes indeedy... used to have solar panels... would love to see more of that here.

Governments (specifically the US for not stepping up to the plate on the Kyoto Treaty) make me pretty perturbed in thier unwillingness to give up revenue from the big companies that pay the lobbyists. I feel my government in particular is the worst of the bunch in that it WILL NOT take responsibility for what it does and what it produces. We have a duty to try to cut our pollutants and tell our companies that they can't run the country - but that won't happen with Bush in office (no - I do not support him in any way, shape or form).
I take responsiblity in living green and buying things that are either from recycled material or will be energy efficient. Yes, I do spend more, but I think it is worth it.

Love this thread, by the way... you got me on one of my favorite subjects. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

That will be an issue in my paper. The biggest threat to the environment is people not caring! Too many people will say when asked "Do you think the environment is in danger and should something be done about it", will answer "Yes & Yes". But then when asked about issues like "Do you recycle?" answer a resounding "NO". To use a bad cliche, too many people talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.

I too only buy free range eggs, and also will only eat free range chicken and turkey. I am not against eating meat, but am appalled at the treatment of the animals. The thing that pisses me off most is this argument "we are only raising them to kill them for food, so why does it matter?" I want to take these people and shove them is a cage so small they can't move, have to sh** on each other, get limited amounts of water, and have all of their teeth removed!

Very true Moridin.

I loved planet of the Apes because it put you in the animals seat.

I started cutting down on the amount of meat I ate a fair few years ago. I didn't want to be a vegetarian and repress myself, but by cutting down I got healthier and felt better about the environment. It takes as much grain to feed one cow bred for say a Big mac, as it does to feed a village. The cows poo emits methane which contributes to the ozone problem, and in Europe (except for Sweden) the herbiverous bovine was turned into a carnivore and given ground up animals in their food - ala BSE/CJD.

We should be disgusted with our race the way we have treated it's other inhabitants. The capability is there. People love feeding cute animals.

I tried to only eat meat if I was hungry enough to kill an animal - I failed, because if I really had to kill a pig, I wouldn't eat bacon.(Smarter than cats and dogs, they, according to my wife who went to an Agricultural High School, scream on the morning they get killed.... they know.)

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
Yes.

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
Yes / No.

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
Yes ! As soon as it was available in France, I did. And made my family do so.

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
Against. First, we don't master all the scientific consequences of toying with nuclear power. And second, how selfish are we to leave behind stuff that will still be poisoning in centuries ?

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
Double, no prob, as long as I could be sure that the extra money goes where it is supposed to, and not in the car companies owners pockets ...

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
Yes - happy to.

Companies, no doubt. I think that alas economics rule the world today, and that the governments are quite powerless to compell big companies with money power to respect laws.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yorick, I don't agree with you, I think that the earth has a capacity to heal itself and restore balance from agressions, but only so far, and I fear that we humans, numerous as we are, are starting to meddle with nature in too many areas and with too less concern for balance for the earth to be able to handle the consequences - or maybe it will, but in a rather violent way ...

K, let me see how well I can answer this...

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?

Absolutely, I think that we're running out of time to make a difference in our planets future that might be for the better.

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)

Unfortunately no.

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)

Absolutely, as much as possible.

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?

For, but I think that more work needs to be doneto refins the provcess to make it safer and waste disposal is still a critical issue

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?

It would depend on the quality of the automobile, and the alternate fuel source

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?

Yes

Who do you think is the main culprit of global warming
Consumers for their unwillingness to use ‘cleaner’ products because they cost more and are less available
Automotive and Oil companies for their unwillingness to change to alternative energy
Governments for their unwillingness to introduce and enforce stricter emissions laws

I think all of the above, the public demands ease and comfort and is unwilling to wait for it to be done in an enviromentaaly sound manner, the Automotive and Oil companies will not give in until the oil is gone and unless we do something to change the public's dependnce on fossil fuels they will never have to.

Governments are almost corporate run at this point and will bend to the will of big business, so they will capitulate to them. Where this places blame, I don't know, but it is divided between the three...

HOPE THIS helps!!!

Moridin, Yorick, for a fair amount of people, it is not that they don't want to buy free range eggs (as an example), but that they just can't ! In our 'developed' countries, companies never stop trying to pay people less and less, and if they protest, the company just closes and goes away in a country where it can cut down salaries because people there have no choice.

I myself buy free range eggs, and am willing to pay more for stuff if it is made in a greener way, but I never forget that the fact that I effectively have this choice available is a luxury. I have had the luck to be born in France, the luck to be born in a middle class family, that gave me the luck to be able to pursue studies and get a good job and a good salary, but I will never forget that a lot of people around the world don't have that luck, and are not given choices. I fervently believe that foremost we must strive to create an economical balance between all countries, so as to lessen the power of today's big monster companies. Because if we don't, peaceful and humanist and green ideas will always get f***ed.

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
**yes

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact
topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)

**yes, the hole in the ozone layer and cancer rates rising in some parts of the world

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
**Recycling is mandatory in most cities around me,incl. my own, but I would do it anyway.

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?

**I don't say I'm for/against. They are here. Lets keep them as 'safe' as possible until or unless we can find a better, more earthfriendly way to supply the power needed. I would prefer the earthfriendly energy if it were available to me.

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline?
*** If I could afford it and it was a reasonable alternative to the cars we drive now, I'd pay quite a bit.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
**Considering de-regulation just jacked my bills up over 200% for the same thing I've always used...dunno. Aside from startup costs, why should the alternative methods of generating energy cost more?

Who do you think is the main culprit of global warming
Consumers for their unwillingness to use ‘cleaner’ products because they cost more and are less available
Automotive and Oil companies for their unwillingness to change to alternative energy
Governments for their unwillingness to introduce and enforce stricter emissions laws

**EVERYONE... it's not a black and white , cause-effect kind of thing now. We have locked into a circle of use/abuse.

I have to disagree with you on this Moiraine. I don't think the cost of organic foods is a real issue, at least not in the US. I shop exclusively at an Organic Co-op and my grocery bills are no higher than they were when I shopped at the large super markets. I believe the issue with many people is that they don't care enough about the issue and they have the impression that 'organic' or 'free-range' foods cost more! One example in my city: 12 'regular' large eggs=$1.00 - $1.15.......12 'free-range' eggs = $1.27! I could see this being costly if you ate hundreds of eggs a week, but for one dozen it will not break the bank (even on a budget). Also I have found that organic rice when bought in bulk costs less than regular rice at the supermarket!

I do agree however that we do need to strive for economic equality in the world!

Thanks for taking the time to answer! Hope you are enjoying your stay at your parents http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
Yes, but it isn't glamourous enough so it won't

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption) yes, it was from Saturn Dealership and it was on car pollution.

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions)
Yes, Cans are a favorite, but I also do newspaper and glass. And women, but that is for an entirely different paper.

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why? Not sure if we are ready for that kind of potential menace, and there are better ways. We just have to make them more efficent.

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline? If they were more efficent and cost less over the lifetime, I would probably pay a couple of Grand more. But they should be able to make them for as much or less than the bad boys of Detroit can.

Yes.

Moridin, in France, greener products ARE more expensive, and more, they cannot be found everywhere, or all at the same place. I have to buy my eggs and chickens and vegetables at one market, meat at another, cheese at again another. And I know for a fact that when you have to feed a family of 4 persons with a low French salary, you have to pay attention to the price of every product. I don't have an opinion on how it is in the U.S., but I know how it is here. The fact is that you have to make additional efforts to buy green stuff. For some it is a matter of choice, for a lot of others, it isn't. Here at least.

Alrighty Moridin, sorry I'm late in replying...

Do you think global warming should be a top priority for world governments?
Absolutely. We need to start thinking of ourselves as a global community and stop all the bullshit about national boundaries in re: global warming, pollution, biodiversity, stripmining, etc.

Have you read any news articles or heard/watched any TV programs on global warming in the past 6 months? If so, do you remember the exact topic (i.e. Kyoto treaty, fossil fuel consumption)
Multiple programs on Discovery channel, public television, the Learning Channel. Most recent was a show about global warming trends and the specific effect on the pacific northwest aquifers and marine species.

Do you recycle? (recycling reduces the amount of debris in landfills and therefore reduces methane emissions) Always. I also recycle by maintaining older vehicles rather than buying new ones. And before someone asks, I have retooled the engines to meet mid-90's emission requirements...best I could do with 30+ year old engines....

How do you feel about Nuclear power as an energy source? Against or For
If against, why?
For it with the caveat that we must make it safer and cleaner before we can use it.

How much more would you be willing to pay for a car that used an alternative power source to gasoline? Depending on the cleanliness of the power source, probably double.

Would you be willing to pay more for electricity if your power company used alternative energy sources (i.e. wind/water generation, solar power)?
In a heartbeat. we currently heat with processed wood waste and light with candles. Our two-month electric bill is about $75.00

Who do you think is the main culprit of global warming
Consumers for their unwillingness to use ‘cleaner’ products because they cost more and are less available
Yes

Automotive and Oil companies for their unwillingness to change to alternative energy
Yes

Governments for their unwillingness to introduce and enforce stricter emissions laws
Yes

As a footnote, check into the application of Chaos theory and Self-Organizing Systems theory as it applies to the current global eco-health situation. fair warning: The results are far more frightening than a Stephen King novel...

Sorry Moiraine, my last post did not exactly get my point across. I agree that organic or green products are not always available or cheap. What I was trying to say is that in some places (i.e. any city in the US) organic foods are available and they are not more expensive. Here people have the choice to buy organic, but choose not to, b/c of the misinterpretation that they are more expensive and there is less variety!

I like to use my sister as an example of this. I buy a soy based 'fakin' bacon that costs around $3.00/16 ounces. It has no fat and no grease. My sister buys pork bacon that costs around $2.00/16 ounces, but has an enormous amount of grease and fat. I tried to get her to buy the fake bacon and try it, but she kept insisting that it was too expensive. She would go through two packs of pork bacon a week (family of 3), but I finally got her to buy the 'fake' bacon and she only used one pack for the whole week. This is because it has no fat/grease and you only have to cook half as much to get the same amount of actual 'food'. So she used to spend $4/wk and now spends $3/wk. It is 'deceptive' pricing that prevents people from trying organic.

Does this make any sense whatsoever or am I rambling?

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear ignorant,
than open it and remove all doubt!

Moridin, in regards to the food issue: My wife and I recently made the switch to eliminate meats, eggs, and dairy products from our diet. In the last two months, I've lost 15 pounds, sleep better, have more energy, and just generally feel healthier. Our grocery bill is now under $250.00 monthly, and we're not consuming things that screw up the environment during their growth or processing.
O.K., bully for us....Here's the catch:
We can spend so little because the store we buy from, Trader Joe's, also sells high-priced gourmet items such as pates', prepared meats, cheeses, etc.. The fact that they make fat bank on that stuff allows them to sell the other food at a reasonable price.
We have the great good fortune to live in the strongest economy in the world, although I'm sure GW & co. will fix that soon... Anyway, the price we pay for our cheaper foods and greater selection is that the companies who offer these things to us usually also do the higher-profit but more damaging business also.
It seems that nothing is without a price, unfortunately.
