I've set up the latest version of this forum software (v6.01) and it's a 'fresh' install, no mods, no changes made to the layout or colors, just a fresh install, if you would like to look at the new features, check it out at:

http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/cg...ultimatebb.cgi

It has lots of new features built in. one is private messaging, link to a photo of yourself in 'profile' 'sex' and age profile fields, and lots more!

I don't know if I will upgrade to this YET, I just set it up as a test 'The Great Escape' forum for now. This release IS finally worth the $200 bucks I paid on the licence http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

PS: If you want, you can log on as a new user.. just to see the options and stuff.. but remember that this is a test forum, and if I plan to upgrade to it, nothing from that forum (messages or users) will be saved).

This new version can easily be installed 'over' this version and converts the messages and user databases with ease.

Z, does have a lot of bells and whistles. Black Isle Studios recently upgraded to V6. It has some amazing features.

I tried it, but it went all wierd on me - the same effect I get when I try to use the graphics library - the images on my monitor all get messed up and sort of overlay each other - that's the best way I can describe it.

Not sure about the personal message thing - can this be overseen by the moderator? I would hope so as otherwise it could open an avenue of opportunity for flaming/harassing individuals for unscrupulous users.

Also I think personal messages could generate cliques with private conversations overtaking general spamming!

Rating each other seems to me to be a bit of a popularity contest - don't like this feature. Also prefer to have the first post at the top of page 1 with subsequent posts underneath.

Sorry Ziroc, I will have a bit more of a play with it if I can get back in, but initial reaction is thumbs down in a number of areas IMHO. Please someone try to convince me otherwise, I don't like to be negative about new stuff, it's not really like me!!!

Hey Epona, some of those are good points ! The private message thing could take away the spam, but should also be controlled by someone. But anyway it will be very difficult to read ALL the private messages that people will send. And about the order of the replies, its true that its shocking now, but i dont think it will be very hard to get used to it.

But the board has other goo features, like the "instant" features that allow to insert smilies and hmtl easyly. I also like the fact that the public nickname can be changed, unlike here (rikard should be so pissed about this now http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif)

You should be able to have private messages switched off if you don't want to receive any.

Also, you can choose to hide the ratings.

I think a lot of these features are customizable. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Memnoch, I should have made my point more clearly - I'm a NOSY OLD SOD! and I would worry that everyone would send private messages to each other and not to me and I would be missing out on stuff! (Don't worry, I'm not *clinically* paranoid - at least not yet!) My main worry is about feeling left out as the Moon's Hope threads disappear into 'privatemessageland'! I would hope that people wouldn't use it to create an exclusive clique though.

I realise that it is probably a bit daft and not particularly well thought out for me to feel like that! Sorry!

http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...s/birthday.gif Epona! I know what you mean, but if people want to IM each other, it isn't like there arent alot of ways to do it already, maybe it will keep some of the http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...les/repuke.gif cyber-slobbering out of threads so things like the inn do not get so clogged with it. NOT that I have anything against 2 consenting people slobbering all over each other, cyber or otherwise, I just do not like having to wade thru it to talk with othershttp://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif
you can turn off the IM, and the ratings, or just block individuals if you so desire, but boy do I agree with Rikard and Memny, it be a bit harsher on the eyes than the current soothing scheme, but boy I likes it alot! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

I just looked at it. I couldn't get on because I don't know what my "location" is. I do share some of the same concerns that Epona has. The popularity thing I don't think is good. Some people are very sensitive any and feelings could get hurt. We just got that post from Memnoch reminding us to be more inclusive. I really worry about people feeling left out. And the personal conversations. I agree that it could degenerate into little clicks. I already have personl messaging set up with a few people on the board anyway. Of course, I know we want something that can handle all the posts. I just feel that everytime we upgrade there are good point to it and bad point. I don't wantto see us loose that "community feel". Maybe the problem is we really need custom-designed software, since we are unique.

And if someone will tell this "technologically challenged person" what her location is, I'll try it out.

Ok, I held off on my opinion initially because I was curious as to how people would see it.

I'm picking up a lot of negative feedback about the color scheme. Don't worry about that, colors can easily be changed and customized. It would be a bit of a change moving from brown to white, just as it was a change moving from blue to brown, right? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

I agree that the latest-to-earliest post sequencing is confusing but this can also easily be fixed. Black Isle use exactly the same UBB v.6.0.1 and their posts are sequenced earliest-to-latest.

The interface appears to be a lot easier to use, with a lot more buttons to use smileys, UBB etc. HTML is currently switched off, but could easily be switched on if Ziroc decides to do that.

The private messaging thing appears to be a concern for a number of people worried about invasion of privacy and I can understand that. However, I'm a bit puzzled - isn't this essentially just the same as sending someone an email? I think there's an option to block all private messages to be sent to a user (the same as not displaying your email on your profile on this board).

The rating system does have the potential to drive wedges between people. We've already had a couple of issues involving people wanting to leave/thinking of leaving because of feelings of being unloved, unpopular, etc. I won't go into that as it's been given more than enough airplay in my opinion. Rating posters on a scale of 1-5 will probably only reinforce feelings of inadequacy in people who have a low self-esteem and get rated low (or not get rated at all).

However, we also need to think about how much easier this forum will be to run and manage. Maybe Ziroc can give us his perspective on that! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Just my thoughts.

Hey Z! I briefly went in last night. Had some trouble with one thread showing odd symbols (no, Mems, not Simbul! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif) instead of the text. Also got a IM while not in the board- gave email notification but when I went to the board couldn't see anything nor find a way to answer such messages. Duh, was I just missing something? Or can't you reply if you are not on the forum at the time? I've seen other IM setups where the message can be clicked as a regular dialog box even if you aren't actively in the forum screen.

The white background is annoying...but maybe it's a customizable feature for our Webmaster? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Most recent message first is more like email, but I do NOT like it for the forums at all. Small problem if you want to know what the whole topic is about and how it progressed: you have to scroll down (eeeff...in a thread of 200+?? YIKES) to the bottom and read up-awkward at best. Could be a spoiler problem too. Suppose I see a topic I think I'm interested in, go to it, and the first thing I see is someone's answer to the thread that includes spoilers? Maybe if I'd seen the whole first post, I'd have realized the questions/topic were going to spoil me and not read any more? Just a thought...not really enough to say yay or nay the whole upgrade, mind you.

Epona: I've been on a few boards where IM is used. Memny is right, you can usually choose to not accept such messages. In fact on one board I used to frequent, you could choose your list of people that you contact frequently (like an address book) and could further choose to accept ALL IM's, or only from that list. Z? is there a feature on this one that allows 'stealth mode' or 'lurk mode'- ie: you can choose to be in the forum and NOT be visible to others (for IM)...well unless you post, of course!

I see IM as a boon in a few ways. Like last night I needed to check if someone had seen my email. That really wasn't something that added to the thread I was in, "Did you get my email?" ends up being a whole post, along with "yes I did" or "no I didn't". Those things can me sent as IM if the other party is online. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif Epona, I'm as nosy as the next person (gee, why is everyone laughing?), and I understand your concerns. I do think that if people want private communication now, they manage without posting to the forum (email, ICQ etc) so I don't think that will make as big an impact as we might fear.

Can somebody tell me: isn't IM geared for one-to-one? If so, it would be impossible for a small group to have a separate chat that way as opposed to going to the Inn, or somesuch.

I too have doubts about rating each other. Considering our 'spam for stars' problem with newbies who see some members with titles or stars they envy (yes there are some out there, even now..grrr), I can't even imagine the "ratings wars" that might erupt from something like this. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif Bad for a whole lot of egos and that spells disaster for some members staying around.
Note, you are getting that little 'concern' about the system from me, Z! You know I'm the last one who'd worry what her own rating would be. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif I do worry about less effusive and prolific members not feeling welcome/wanted. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

I didn't spend a whole lot of time testing the upgrade board, so I can't give much more feedback today. Will go in again and play a bit. It's always a bit awkward breaking in a new setup...still I will say this current one seemed so 'user friendly' to me when I got here during the open testing. The upgrade seems to need more 'work' on my part to navigate than the current board.

Ok, there you go..my 20 cents worth http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Ziroc, once again, thank you very much for your tireless effort to improve the board. <smile.gif>

But, things I do not like:
1. the rating system
2. the inverse order of the posts
3. the new autoformating features are cool, but why can I only use them at the very end ? whenever I go back to insert a new paragraph or smiley, the autofeatures will stubbornly force me back to the very end of the post. <mad.gif>
4. The current software allows to load the editing window with posts posted by others. That is a great educational tool, because that way you could just check how others had done a formatting, smiley, etc you wanted to use yourself. The new software won't allow that.

How does the private messaging system work ? Where do they show up on the addressee's end ? Do you need to have special software installed ? Forgive me, I completely ingnorant with respect to these things.

Have to add my two cents worth (of course http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif )

If I understand this correctly, upgrading to this 'new' forum would esentially be like upgrading your version of Word or Excel or anything else...is this correct? It would basically be the same as before, but with a few more 'bells & whistles'.

I am a little 'lacking' in my knowledge of forums and bulletin boards, but is are the new features of this upgrade worth the time and effort involved? Also, has this upgraded version been tried and tested on other forums? Like when I upgraded my MS Office I didn't do it right away but waited about 6 months to make sure the latest 'bug-free' version was released. I didn't want to install it and then have to download patch after patch. I know this would not really be a concern for us users, but just a question.

Don't know if I am making sense....maybe I am just babbling and should stop now http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Ramon, (HI!)

The ratings system can be converted to the one Ziroc is using now in this board.
The inverse order of posts can apparently be reversed (confused yet, I am?)
The automating features probably take some getting used to, because I had similar problems and I can't believe the program won't let me go back and insert a smiley or something!

Re your 4th point: You mean like when I quote you here I can see how you did your post? Or do you mean like when I just click 'edit' on anyone's post and can see how it was constructed, even though I can't do anything but look? Or both? I didn't experiment long enough with the upgraded version to run into that problem last night.

The IM system- well I didn't actually play with this one last night. But on other boards I've been to, you usually see a list of who's on the board at the time and you can choose to send an instant message (software is all part of the board, no dl needed) to someone. They should see an indicator or the dialog box to know a message is being sent and from whom. Then you should have a choice whether to answer or not. Also, the other systems I've seen and apparently this one, allow a person to choose not to receive such messages at all (or in some systems to limit to specific nicks which ones you accept).

Hi CloudEducator http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif ,

Thanks for helping. Re the 4th point: I meant the second of the two options you mentioned, the one involving the editing function. But come to think of it, your question might already contain the solution as you should also be able to gather that information via the quote function, which is still possible with the new software. Point 1 or 2 have also already being answered by the Great Ziroc himself, but point 3 is really annoying, as I use to jump back and forth when writing my posts.

On the IM system: I sent a message to Epona, it looked like a regular posting window and on the main board window/interface there was no extra dialogue box or alike to be seen.

Btw, I love your current signature, but I always imagined you a lot, uh, "pinker" and the virtuous Bk a lot "bulkier". http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

ROTFL! Ramon, you are always in fine form, but today, Wundebar! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Yes, the third point would be an unpleasant drawback, if not fixable. I too, go back and forth when writing posts.

Are you in the new board now? I may come in and try some things. Can we IM? ooooh, that sounds a bit 'kinky' doesn't it? LOL

As for the sig, thanks! I've had the jpg a while, just finally got it hosted last night. 'Pinker'? LOL...well, dear Ramon, this is not the ONLY sig I'll ever use from now on, but most likely a perennial favorite. I'm collecting jpg and gif's for a nice variety. Far be it from me to settle with ONE!http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif Kind of like names, you know. teehee And as for our 'virtuous BK' ...uh...I'll let him discuss his er, 'bulk' with you, himself. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif ROTFL!

Well, I've been reading everyone's posts and have to say the following:

1) If the rating can just be our regular stars for posting and titles.

2) If the newest posts can show up first. (I'm like Cloudy, I don't have like to back track through pages and pages).

It would be OK. I just don't want to see anything drive people away.

My opinion for what it's worth.

Thanks, Memnoch, for the location thing, I'm a little dense

Reeka, a woman that has studied a zillion languages cannot be dense. See above,
I was being dense when I did not realize that I complaining about nothing, because I did not realize that the "quote" function would do the job as well.

And, please do not get mewrong, could it be that you, like some people, especially some women, are simply a little afraid of technical/computer stuff ? (Before you start shouting at me, ladies, reread what I have written). I am not talking about actual ability here, but the hampering effect of a lack of self-esteem in a certain area. Fortunately, with regards to computers that problem seems to be declining with each new generation. I am lecturing again http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif

Great! Sounds like it's ideal, then Z. Any reason why you might not like it then? Sounds like you'll have a new 'toy' if you upgrade us! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif
And not more work than this one, I hope? Maybe easier?

Hey, what's with the Spam Master title, you fiendish ranker, you? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif Gee, can't a girl have a PRETTY title when she achieves fame and stardom? LOL LOL ROTFL

Okay, CloudSeductress, let's meet on the new board to do something kinky - like sending each other IMs. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Ramon! No, you are right in that used to the way things were for a large number of people, not just women.

As usual, Cloudy is unusual...ok, no false humility runs here..I enjoy technology. I'm quick when it comes to learning things computer-related. And love the challenge of solving the problems that arise. I'm not a hardware person, but I'm learning a bit here and there as needed. Don't always understand everything but I am always willing to give it a go. In fact, for software, I often have to teach myself, then teach faculty (male and female) how things work.

That said, I'm going to make you feel good, Reeka! I was momentarily stumped by that "LOCATION" listing too! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif
