This is something that happened in Sydney in a game of rugby league last weekend. Now I challenge ANYONE to tell me of a more bizarre charge being laid on a player - in ANY sport. It's getting downright dangerous to be a footy player http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

<font color="white">
JOHN HOPOATE was handed a 12-week suspension late tonight after being found guilty of unsportsmanlike interference by the NRL judiciary in a bleak evening for the Wests Tigers.

After a two-hour hearing, the panel of Royce Ayliffe, Mal Cochrane and Jeff Hardy found Hopoate guilty of deliberately sticking his fingers up the anuses of North Queensland players Peter Jones, Paul Bowman and Glenn Morrison in Saturday night's match at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

They heard evidence from Hopoate, referee Tony Archer, Tigers coach Terry Lamb and from all three North Queensland players.

Hopoate's defence counsel Bernie Gross QC contended to Jones that his client had merely administered a "wedgie" on the Cowboy in the seventh minute of the match.

"It wasn't a wedgie. That's when your pants are pulled up your arse. I think I know the difference between a wedgie and someone sticking their finger up my bum," said Jones, admitting that while both acts caused discomfort, they caused different sensations and he could differentiate between the two.

Jones claimed he hadn't provoked Hopoate and that afterwards he immediately expressed his "disgust" and gave the Tongan international a push.

Bowman said after tackling Hopoate in the 17th minute, he stood over the winger and "that's when I felt fingers inside my shorts pushing up my arse".

"There was pressure there. I know he wasn't doing it accidentally. He was definitely pushing.

"I was disgusted. I couldn't believe it. I know it's a tough game, but there's no room for that."

Gross argued that Bowman had been excessive in trying to slow Hopoate from playing the ball by grabbing the North Queensland captain's leg.

But Bowman maintained "if he (Hopoate) was a man, he wouldn't do that".

When pressed by Gross, Bowman became angry and asked the QC: "If I held your leg, would that give you the right to put your finger up my arse?"

In his conclusion, NRL judiciary commissioner Jim Hall described Hopoate's case as appalling.

"I must say in my 45 years' involvement in rugby league I've never come across a more disgusting allegation than I've had to deal with now," Hall said.

As North Queensland captain, Bowman protested against Hopoate's actions to referee Archer after the first two offences.

Archer said despite keeping a close eye on Hopoate for the rest of the game, he did not see the Wests player stick his fingers up anyone's anus.

I bet you nobody shook hands with him after the match - for more reasons than one. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

But thinking about it, in American football, the QB places his hands in the centre's crotch from behind, I always thought this a little "strange"

Actually, Memnoch, in American football the contact can be rather "intimate." Because of the shape of the ball, and depending on the style in which the ball is "snapped" (exchanged from center to quarterback), the contact made could get the gentlemen involved charged with "lewd and lascivious (sp?)" acts under any other circumstances.

Having played American football through high school and a little college, I can attest to this. Center is one of the few line positions I didn't play. Could not get used to those "intruding" hands. Each time the quarterback reached in there, I would "flinch" and draw a penalty during scrimmages... guess I was a mite homophobic at the time... LOL

Sir_Tainly,

Fortunately, I never had that problem. We did, however, have a QB who thought he was the second coming of Johnny Unitas/Joe Namath/Roger Staubach and Fran Tarkenton all rolled into one. He kept saying that it didn't matter that the rest of us sucked because he was great enough to overcome our lack of ability.

Well, during one game in November, just before the playoffs, we were standing on the sideline when "someone" (possibly an inferior lineman) suggested that, since we had the game well in hand, it might be interesting to see how glamour boy managed with no one blocking for him. Someone seconded the idea and a conspiracy was born. Next offensive play, we all made "turnstile" blocks and glamour boy got kinda buried... broke his collar bone... ended his season (obviously).

We went into the playoffs with a freshman quarterback, our injured "star" saying we'd never get anywhere without him. The TEAM won our state's championship, going undefeated for the first time in school history. We repeated the feat the following year with that freshman, now a sophomore, having beaten out our "star," now a senior, for the starting QB job.

Sir_Tainly 03-29-2001 10:52 AM

Our QB thought he was god too, but he could only throw well to the other team!
All our opponents wondered why we only ever did running plays. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Injuries we a speciality, since we played on astroturf we dished out them out wholesale to visitors. Strangely our worst injuries occured when we were away playing on grass.

"If horses can't eat it, I ain't playing on it." I hated astroturf.

I played both guard and middle linebacker. It seemed I could hit harder on grass. There were few things more satisfying than hitting a ball carrier hard enough that he would quit and just fall down when he saw you coming... hehehe...

By the way, a second suggestion for dealing with our original quarterback was to actually help the other team tackle him. This was vetoed in committee. Someone said our coaches might notice... LMAO!

Lifetime, orientation has nothing to do with. It constitutes sexual abuse and is a form of rape. (Penetration without consent) Hopa will wear it on the field from now on I reckon. Targetted big time.

Here's a newsflash on the John Hopoate Fingering Affair. Absolute classic!! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

<font color="red">
Controversial Wests Tigers winger John Hopoate was last night on the receiving end of a 12 week suspension after being found guilty by the NRL Judiciary of inserting his fingers up the anuses of three North Queensland players.

NRL judiciary commissioner Jim Hall said last night ‘The penalty needed to be harsh. Anything less would have cleared the passage way for this to happen more often. We need to plug up any holes that are emerging in our game as quickly as we can.’

NRL chiefs were poking around for answers for more than 4 hours before emerging with their verdict.

An internal probe has also been set up to find out if this act is a spreading trend amongst other clubs. ‘We need to remove this crap from our game any way we can.’ He added ‘This might mean a long and hard search into every player on the field.’

Wests tigers coach Alan Lamb defended Hopoates actions, saying ‘There is nothing wrong with getting stuck into the opposition, and if there is an opening anywhere on the field I will always instruct my players to take it.’

Peter Jones, who was on the receiving end of Hopoates actions, was unhappy with the verdict ‘The whole thing stinks. He should have received a lot more than a 12 week suspension, he should get as good as he gives.’ Hopoate is now hoping to wipe his hands of the incident.

On a separate issue, Ian Roberts has announced his return to the NRL ‘The modern game is now much more suited to my style.’
