Yorick 03-25-2001 05:13 AM

In one of my classes here, a Mongolian student was impressed and surprised that my demonstration of vocal placement options sounded like a Throat-singer from her homeland in Ulanbataar.

She gave me a CD to show what she meant.

Boy am I blown away. This singer achieves the 'effect' of two notes at once with the use of harmonics and resonater movement. Incredible! Very similar to the Tibetan technique, but uses more range.

I feel like I've been shown a whole new dimension to the instrument. I'd heard about this, but never heard it for myself.

I love delving into cultures. If was wasn't here, I wouldn't have met the Mongolian and got a window into her culture (we talked for ages after a class about her country).

Man. Had to share it or I'd burst, sorry ("Midas has donkeys ears, Midas has donkeys ears...")

Er ... I read your post with a great interest, and I was very happy for you to have had a new wonderful experience, and for us that you had shared it - but I confess that I have limited experience in Mongolian music (shame on me ...), so I didn't know what to reply ... http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/redface.gif

OK, I will make very soon a trip to my favourite music store, and see what I can do to remedy to my ignorance.

Yorick... that sounds interesting. Could you post a sample or two at Stealthy's site on the Jukebox? Or is that too difficult from an internet cafe?

Glad you're having fun! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Far too often cultures we dont know or understand are rejected as outlandish or just "weird". But this just goes to show you.....

Sounds pretty cool Yorrick, try to post it somewhere. You might be starting a musical revelution! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Thanks Bilqis. Actually I've managed to get a computer to the house I'm staying in. It's got some recording hardware with it, so if I can get it up and running... http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/heee.gif ...It'll be business as usual!
Thus the answer may be yes!

Moiraine you went to "Hat Baby" I take it?

Oh no Jerome, this is weird alright, but that's the whole point. Mind you, make sure you don't include Marco Polo, the Beatles, Bilqis (re. Yemen), Moiraine (re. Aussie) or myself in that royal 'we' there Jerome. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Actually Yorick & Jerome, we have many many tapes of Yemeni & Egyptian music (ever heard of Um Kulthum?) I keep bugging my husband to get them on cd before they die the eventual death of all cassette tapes. We are fans of World music at our house. Why limit ourselves to the same old boring stuff that airs on the radio or MTV??

Yorick, I'll be very interested to hear your next cd. I'm betting there will be multiple cultural influences in your new songs. Am I right? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

And *YIPPEEEEE* to the possible posting of Mongolian music at Stealthy's. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Yes, Yorick, I went to the "Hatt baby" site - very weird indeed ! Especially while not understanding the lyrics ... http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Oh, Jerome, I didn't say that I 'rejected' Mongolian music ! What I said that, unfortunately, there are so many interesting topics in this world, and one can not, alas !, know about all, I didn't happen to cross into Mongolian music yet, but now that Yorick has kindly pointed how interesting it is, I will for sure !

I've been into some of the music Peter Gabriels "Real World" music label has put out for some time. Some has included Yemeni music actually. Also into Afro-Celt, which combines trad. Celtic and North African music styles and players.

World music definitely has a freshness to it for sure.
Not sure what the story is with 'Hat-Baby'. It's damn catchy though, I keep singing it in my head...arrrg!.

Very strange.

'Rejected' was fine Jerome. It was the 'we' that was the prob. I just try to avoid generalisations where possible. 'We' implied everyone in general, when in actual fact I know more people who are fascinated by other cultures and enjoy hearing/discovering about them. I came across one such person you were talking about, just the other day and it actually shocked me.

No worries http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

I just came home from the concert of Mongolian instrumental and throat singing I mentioned earlier - guys, this music is amazing ! I didn't know that a human voice could produce such sounds ! It goes from the foghorn to the singing of the hummingbird ! And the playing with the harmonics ! Extraordinaire ! And such power of evocation ! I will stop here, I am just speechless. Thank you, Yorick, thank you for sharing this wonder. I read your thread Monday morning, and then I had the immense luck to discover the same day that a group of four Mongolian throat singers would came here for an unique concert the next Thursday. Such a coincidence ...

Dublin Grocer 03-29-2001 04:43 PM

I remember being woken by a group of people practicing Himalayan Voice Yoga. I wonder if this is a similar thing. It was being led by a man named 'Ponderosa Pine' who belonged to an environmental group where each individual named themselves after an endangered species.

That was such an unusual week on a university campus. It was there that I played my first game of Zen ping-pong.

Epona 03-29-2001 05:44 PM

Hi Dublin Grocer - er... what an unusual nickname! Are you a grocer, or is it a joke that I am too daft to spot!! Is there a shortened version we can use, it's a bit of a 'handful' to type!!! (or would that be too familiar!! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif )

I have never heard either Mongolian throat singing OR Himalayan voice yoga in real life (other than the short clip I posted a link to the other day) so I can't answer your question. I must try to get to hear some properly some day, I'm now fascinated. How do they DO that?? The concept of zen ping-pong sounds fascinating too...
