Loved Cloudy's post, and it made me think about early pc games (1990 era)
I remember when I got my first IBM PC, it was a 386/16Mhz, with 1MB ram, and a 40 MEG HD!! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif I remember getting my first PC game, and it was Eye of the Beholder-- Before the IMB, I always had a C-64 (well, it was a C-128, a newer model), but graphics on it were not hot, EGAish.. so when I saved up for this IBM, I remember buying Eye of the beholder before I got the PC, and I took it to radio shack and acted like I wanted to test the game out and acted like I wanted to buy their pc's http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif I didn;t know what C:\ was, what install meant, or how to even INSTALL this game (1990 again), heeh, I learned fast with help, but do you remember the first game you ever played; that 'feeling' you got? Kinda like innocence (in a way). I wish I could 'feel that way' about games now.. Why? Because now, when I look at a game, I know if it's OpenGL, or Sprite based. I know the code, and can tell what type of 'engine' is used, and what res it'll go to, ect, ect.. I can unpack, hack, and more to these games, and it ruins it in a way.. (sigh) I still enjoy games, but I always look at my old games with a sence of fondness, and can kinda re-live that feeling in my mind. (This sounds freakish, I know!) http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif Am I crazy, or does anyone else feel this way?? Ziroc |
I'm not as smart about all of that as you are Ziroc. I am only just learning some of that stuff -- very slowly -- so it's still kind of exciting to me. I suspect it's something like creating films and/or animation. My husband has done both (as a hobby) and now can't watch a movie without spending part of the time figuring out how they 'did that'.
Innocence lost - it's one reason we have children, so we can recapture vicariously the excitement of first discovery. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif NOT that I'm recommending that you go out & have children... no no no. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/hihi.gif ------------------ http://www.paulbunyan.net/mnssc/redcelticdragon2.gif Having abandoned my search for truth, I am now looking for a good Fantasy. That is so true Bilqis, It'sl ike when you know how a magician does his tricks, his performanc is no longer entertaining. I wonder if this is why people need to believe in things that scienc can't (or at least hasn't yet) disproved?

Well here let me get this back on-topic. Come to think of it we're really not off....more like expanding with our own experiences........sorry.......
I got into this late, mid 90's, the first game I ever played on a PC was Sim City. Back then that was the game to get. All my friends had it, then I saw this box on the shelf......It was calling my name, The Gold box set, the D&D pool of Radiance set. I think it was 4 in one, or maybe 6 in 1. Titles included: Secret of the silver Blades, Pool of Radiance, Pools of Darkness, Treasures of the savage Frontier.......anyone, anyone. After that it was all downhill from there... ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/rpg/wildleprechaun/merlin.gif Feel My Power [This message has been edited by Gray Mage (edited 03-06-2001).] |
Just think about the first CRPG I played. It was called Phantasie on the C64. My friend was already well into RPGs and so he had a few others I forget their names now. One one I remember playing was Hilsfar. Good but moving between locations involved a sideways scrolling minigame with a knight on a horse jumping over hedges (Steeple chase style) those were the days.
------------------ http://website.lineone.net/~swhite10...ile/knight.gif |
Knights and horses......is that why you chose the proffesion of Paladin.....or did it choose you, Sir Knight

When I first got a computer "Way back when" I borrowed an SSI game (Secret of the Silver Blades or something like that) buthe forgot to give me that little wheel thing that has the codes. Luckilly I was addicted to Master of Orion and Master of Magic. But it seemed like every RPG I bought wouldnt work in whatever computer I had. Then I bought Baldurs Gate. It wouldnt load on my 200mz Gateway so I was fed up. Bought my nice Hewlett Packard the next day. Yep maxed the Visa lol. Anyway it STILL wouldnt install. So I sent the discs off to Interplay (cd1 was bad)and bought IWD. Needless to say it worked too well. I must have missed 3 days of work that week. I was uhhhh sick. I bought BGII before my BGI cd came back and couldnt wait. I have a roomate (well he owns the house)and he just shakes his head lol

The game didn't inspire me, moving was too hard. I became a Paladin as when left school I had no idea what to become. Therefore I went down to the local job centre and the helpful assistant went through the job cards, starting at a for acrobat, archer, etc until we got to the "P"s. As the woman was getting tired of reading out cards, she simply stopped and said you can do this, you'll 'like' it. And so here I am today. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Well they say that childhood ends when you know that you´re aware of your own mortality, thank god for being a man so I can still have my little child inside!! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif
Well I had a C-64 computer with Bruce Lee and alots thoose other cool games when I was little, I neve had an Amiga or a PC until the first Pentuom computer came out, i started to work with Photoshop and PAgemaker on it to learn and to have to work on for my studies, and well I also had this funny game, terror from the Deep, which is soooo fascinatig.. Fallout and Fallout 2, but it took about half hour to save my game in Fallout 2... Now, I can nearly loose my old computers harddrive in my Ram and Graphic memory.. hehe.. And it still isn´t enough.. Well my most memorable old computer game has stil to be GHOST AND GOBLINS! I still like it he he http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif ------------------ http://www.najk.net/wolfgir/bilder/wolfie.gif ::HOWLING WOLFGIR THE MAD WOLF:: |

My C64 fave's were Crystal Castles (#1 Fave), and Trolls and Tribulations. Other too: Conan, Goonies, Mr. Do, Loderunner, Zork, Wishbringer, and so many more! (Also HH Guide to the Galaxy) - Lots of Infocom games in the mid 80's! Ziroc |
I LOVE C-64 games. i have an emulator and nearly every game I ever owned on my computer currently and I still find that those old games are as much fun as any game made today. Obviously not as indepth as say BG2 but the fun is there and simple. Its funny because i have effectively turned my Pentium III with 256 MB RAM into a 15 year old computer just to play: MULE, Barbarian, Rockstar Ate My Hampster, Trolls and Tribulations, Bounces, and Defender of the Crown.
Whats sad is a friend of mine and I spent about 2 hours playing barbarian and laughing like morons everytime we would cut each others head off. Whoever created C-64 emulators needs big time praise. Azrael Abyss ------------------ I'm the prince of sorrow... Woooo! |
HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Oh Ziroc, you've gone up twenty notches on my 'cool' meter! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif
I did play some games with a friend's husband (hey, NOT those kind! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif ) Don't even remember what they were called. They were dos (text) based 'adventures and loaded by tape. Took forever. Then you maneuvered by asking questions and the syntax was sooo picky. Used stuff like "look chest" or "open door". Moved with keyboard arrows, no mouse then! And I have a confession my first programs for a computer of my own (only got the first one about 5 yrs ago) were Wordprocessing, greeting card and database programs! Um, anyone surprised?! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif The only games I played were the built in card games which suited me just fine as I love to play cards. Hearts/Spades / Solitaire. My first games I bought for my pc (a 233 PI) was Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Myst, then the old arcade games (Pac Man and such). When I discovered Age Of Empires, Heroes of Might and Magic and CaesarIII, had to buy the new Gateway PIII 500 last year. LOL Those expansions needed memory and better graphics! hehehe Hey, Ziroc. Next game you get. Pretend you can't hack it. Go on, just try! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...itty3_anim.gif Cloudy ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memn...y/tornado1.gif Storm-Queen StormCloud of the Black Knight |
Oh my...
The first games I played on the computer were on a some extremely old system and I have no idea what it was, it was at my friend, John Fick's house and it was Tai Pan, a game all about smuggling in the Orient. It was all over from there. The next phase was a Commodore Colt. I was quickly addicted to F-19 Stealth Fighter, Iceman, and Tank! ------------------ http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/DJsmile.gif All right you primitave screwheads, listen up! Cloudy I know the kind of games you mean. My first ever game was Sphinx, Bastard of a game, 'Go west' 'you have been stamped by elefeants: game over.'
But My favorite game was to be Progammers Revange. 'Pick up cloths' 'Go out side' 'You been arested for pubilic nudity:Game over!' sigh they don't make them like that any more. My first Pc game was Umatie(?) underworld. Don't know what the spec was as my dad 'borrewed' the machine from his work, strangle the game was already installed. ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/yt2/gabe/images/Angle.gif Co-president of the Club of Broken Hearts, Burned by love. |
Heh, my first comp was a Commodore 16, we used the first Apple's and TRS (Trash 80's in JC., oh the memories. No such thing as ROM, all our 5 1/4 floppy boot disks getting wiped clean becuase the janitors used the vacuum cleaner near them, oh the days, programming in basic and Fortans. First games were the simple line polygons, original asteroids, pong, original Elite, predecessor of Privateer.
I get a kick out of listening to todays young people complaining about how their new 900 mz P3 with 512k ram, 50 gig hd, is a peice of crap http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif What we wouldn't have given in the old days to even dream that systems like these would exist in the future http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif |
Did anyone else have a Sinclair Spectrum? I had one of those when I was (a lot) younger.
It had a rubber keyboard which constantly used to break, but you could mend it by gluing bits of tinfoil to the circuit-thingy underneath!! Ohh, and the little cassette player that used to sit by the side of it, squeaking away for 20 minutes to load 'The Hobbit' and then the load would fail at the last minute because the tape had warped. Text adventures were my favorite, I used to write them too (in Basic). The worst bit about them was trying to get the syntax right - you knew that the rope HAD to be tied to the cart, but after trying 40 permutations of "TIE ROPE TO CART" you would give up in disgust. And then the keyboard would break.... Oh yes, those were the days ????? (not!) ------------------ http://www.gldb.com/wayno/epona2.gif Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so. |
Amazing Ziroc, my first game was also EOB, but I played it on the amiga. I am fairly new to the PC, so I still find games novel. Can't wait for Black & White and Neverwinter Nights. EOB had me captivated, as I played AD&D in my youth, but found it difficult to find fellow players as I got older. Did you use the wand, or did you kill him the hard way?

Yes! Try 60 permutations! THAT was what was so funny about those games. Arhhh those were the days eh? I remember my first computer back in the early 90's an Amiga 500, It had some great games, early Monkey Islad games, Dune, Wolfenstine and various early RPG's they just seem to have a charm about them that games today do not, (apart from BG,Bg2 that is)

Guess I was priviledged I had the ZX+, the version of the rubber keyboard spectrum, but in a plastic case with such luxuries as a reset button and some extra keys.

The first game system I ever had was the Atari - anyone remember "Combat"??? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...s/coollook.gif
My first computer was an Apple IIe with a green monitor, and my first game on that was Karateka. That was also where I played my first ever RPG - Ultima IV - Quest of the Avatar!! I got Wastelands after that. I loved those games so much that when everyone else was upgrading to IBM PC/XTs (remember those - they had all of 64kb of RAM!) I refused because they didn't have those games for the IBM. ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/genwalk.gif Memnoch - Custodian of the Order of the Holy Flame http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/fire3.gif |
Long long ago, in a city far far away (Syracuse NY), when dh & I were first married and ohhh so poor, our bi-weekly date would be to take $5 each and go to the video arcade to play pac man and Gauntlet. So in '87 when we discovered that we could play pac man on our computer, well, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif LOL But the most fun was when we played "Maniac Mansion", "Day of the Tentacle" and "Sam & Max hit the road". It was about that time I discovered (it's all blurry.. soooooo long ago & these aging minds yanno http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif ) "Betrayal at Krondor". I had just read all of Raymond E. Feists books. VERY exciting! I don't know how many times I replayed that!!
One game we wish they'd remake is "Darklands". You had to learn so much and be truly, consistently honorable to advance in that game. *sigh* Those were the days. ------------------ http://www.paulbunyan.net/mnssc/redcelticdragon2.gif Having abandoned my search for truth, I am now looking for a good Fantasy. JJ strolling down memory lane, oops, trips over age, fall flat on face. The first computer I ever used was called a decuwriter - attached to a vax by phone, you sat and typed at a keyboard, then waited for a response to be typed back at you. Oregon Trail - you have been attacked by indians - you had to scramble to type "BANG" and hit return as fast as possible. or, like your oxen have died, you must go hunting or your party will starve. Then there was star trek, like you had to go hunting Klingons, and print out your star field map, type in the x,y, coords to fire your photon torpedoes. or, nfl football, where you picked the plays like short run, tricky run, short pass, long bomb. (I think those were the only choices!) - or were you guys refering to the jurassic age of computers?
------------------ When given a choice, take both. http://angelfire.lycos.com/rpg/stealthy/mummy.gif |
God, this is all bringing back memories. First computer that I ever owned was the (TR)a(S)hy 80 Model I. It was upgraded from 4k of memory to 16k. I had this cool tape deck drive that took about a half an hour to load a 4k program. No disc drives and a 150baud modem. No k baud modem, just 150 baud. Well, I quickly outgrew this one and upgraded to a (TR)a(S)hy 80 Model IV. Oh, I was in heaven. I had a 20Meg harddrive on that one with 16k of memory and DUAL floppies. Both were 5 1/4". Gone were the half an hour load times (well, at first). It took between 5 and 10 minutes to load then. The display was monochrome, but hey, beggars can't be choosers. I could even go up to 320 x 200 resolution. Could go up to 80 characters x 24 characters on the display. Man, was that awesome or what. I could bank switch to get up to 640x480 in resolution, but it took an engineering degree to program for it (it used 2 separate areas in memory for the graphics). Oh yeah, those were the days. First game I ever played on there was frogger. First roleplaying game was Bard's Tale. First sci-fi game was StarFlight (I just got a 'cracked' copy of this, cause I thought it was such a cool game.) Actually, the game starflight is where I had the idea about the foreign thread. You see, they had alien races that spoke different languages. You have this comm officer, right? Well, she starts off not knowing anything. As you progress in the game, you can "buy" them skills. Skills start off at 50 (I think) and go up to 250. Well, when you talk to aliens and your skill is really low, the computer shows gibberish. As you get higher skills, this gibberish is translated to something you can understand. When you hit 250, you can always make it out. S'kind of how I feel the foreign thread could work if given time. At first, we are all 50's, but as we talk back and forth, we can raise that up to 250. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif Anyways, it was a really cool game. My first REAL game though was Leisure Suit Larry. Anyone remember that game? ANYONE? LOL. I busted a gut on that one. I'll hold off more for later.

I just found out why mine weren't showing up. Tripod just kicked me off. That's ok. I'm going to put the files in my AOL account and try that. It's a paid account, so it shouldn't have those problems. To those that I was hosting the pics for, I will move them there and give out links. Might take me a bit, but we'll get them working again. I figured the Tripod thing was too good to last. Da*n.

This is the killing thread that makes you feel so old, isn't it ?
I didn't start playing computer games very young - I was 21, and like you, Memnie, my first computer game was Ultima IV. The very first image I keep was my boyfriend (now husband) playing Ultima III on our green-and-black M24 -he was getting out from a boat and attacking Lord British's castle. Ultima IV I played on a new PC, in 4 colors ! At the time, we had 2 PCs, and multiplayer games did not exist, so we made a race, playing day and night during a full week (life was so cool when we were students !), exchanging hints on quests, and trying to be the first to finish the game ! I don't remember who won, BTW, but after that we played Ultima V, Ultima VI and Ultima VII the same way. We played a lot of computer games after that, I prefer adventure games, RPGs and games like Railroad Tycoon, Sim City or Age of Empires. Yes, we also played all the Leisure Suit Larry ! So cool. I remember spending a long time in the one when Larry strolls a lane near the sea on rollers, the music was so cool ! BTW, anybody remembers Zani Golf ? So cool when you had to stroke pass the giant bumping hamburger ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif ------------------ http://user.tninet.se/~csx358e/mbpix...ketches005.JPG |
I got started on PC games at work. I became a CADD Operator in 1988. Worked on a old Vax system. We got some new pcs at work Beleive they were Epson IBM clones. I worked the second shift and we didn't have a third shift. Someone brought in some PGA golf games with different courses like Augusta and Pebble Beach. My buddy and I would get our work done and then stay there playing golf games until 3 or 4 in the morning. Then I bought my own computer to help my then girlfriend (now wife) do her computer class work where see went to school. She got an A and I learned Basic.
I eventually got a color monitor and bought Falcon (a flight simulator game) and then Lord Of The Rings. Played them for hours. The last game I bought was Cammando. At the time they were the coolest thing going. They beat the old Atari hands down, cause you had to use your mind. ------------------ Sir Taliesin Ten Rings there are, and nine gold torcs on the battlechiefs of old... |

The first "modern" comp i had was a dx2 50mghz, 4mbram, and a whopping 250meg drive, that was in 91 for over 2000$ (ouch!) I had this game that was shareware, called Moraff's Dungeon - anyone ever play that? It was actually pretty cool, had like over 100 levels to go down, and even a major boss every 10 levels before the big guy himself. I don't remember too much about it now, but there was a town above, teleport portals for the various sections, experience points, and all that jazz. wish I knew where it was nowhttp://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif

I sometimes wonder what we've done to our 4 sons (if anything). They have all played computer games since they were about 2 years old, and have played CRPGs and Adventure games since they were .. 5? ... 7?
