I have a little list of games that I am interested in purchasing, and would like the members here considered opinions on which of these games they think is the most worthy purchase. I can only afford one so want to make the right choice. There all PS2 games. I've looked at magazine and website reviews to come up with this list based on my favorite types of games.
This is the list: Devil May Cry 3 Makai Kingdom Kingdom Hearts Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Known as Winning Eleven in USA/Japan) God of War Prince of Persia (the first Ubisoft one) GTA: San Andreas Dragon Quest VIII (it isn't out here yet though) Phantom Brave Ovbiously I don't expect everyone to have played every single one of these games but if you've played one of them please give your opinion. Thanks in advance |
i'm really not a console person, only played a handful. but i'll try nonetheless.
don't know makai or phantom brave so they're off my list. gta is pretty much more of the same, so if you enjoyed vice city and want more, go for it. i've played some pop on pc. i'm not very good at it but it was enjoyable. i've never played any ff but kingdom hearts is great. i'm not far off finishing that. then there's god of war, not seen it myself but i'm hearing so many people say its absolutely great. so i'd put that up top just based on other's enthusiasm. First and foremost, if you're interested in Dragon Quest, you should hop over here, and read this guy's quibbles. I haven't played the game, nor do I plan to, so that's about the best I can do for you there.
Of the two Nippon Ichi games you have listed, I'd say go for Phantom Brave, if only because I own it myself. Or Disgaea, if you don't have it. Kingdom Hearts is a mixed bag for me. I've played through it several times, and have gotten relatively close to the end, but usually get fed up and quit. I haven't played any Final Fantasy game (other than FF Tactics Advance, but I don't think that counts for much), so whatever part of playing this game for that reason is nonexistant for me. Other than that, I find it all comes down to simple button mashing. I'd be willing to give you mine for less than $10 if you'd want, considering you can get it new for about $15 around here. Other than those few (and San Andreas, which I don't have much to say on), I haven't played any of them. But based on what you have (namely God of War and Prince of Persia), I'd say that you might find Ico and Shadow of the Colossus somewhat interesting as well. And because you possess a PS2, you would do yourself a favor by at least renting either of the Katamari games (if you can find them). Gods are those games fun! Back to what you were asking about: of the ones you have listed, I'd say Phantom Brave would be your best option. It has the Disgaea feel with it's own, unique twist. |
Havnt played any of them except Pro Evo and GTA and have to say I was kinda dissapointed with Pro Evo. My flatmate recently bought the new fifa and I personally feel its alot better. As for GTA again if your a fan its really good fun as theres alot in there to keep you entertained for a good while. I was however a big fan of the original Devil May Cry so number 3 might be good crack ;)

Well I really liked God of War. I'm usually not a console fan, but I liked and finished this one.
It had some very cool combats and the world was very nice. I especially liked all the finishing moves you could do, like riping off the wings of a harpy and such. [ 01-03-2006, 03:10 PM: Message edited by: Luvian ] |
Thanks everyone for your opinions!
At the moment the game I'm thinking of getting now will be either Devil May Cry 3, Phantom Brave or God of war. I really liked Disgaea so naturally Phantom Brave is high on my list. I have the original Devil May Cry and liked it. The only negative thing about it, is I've heard it is extremely hard (unbelievably hard in fact). God of war is supposedly great and I like the idea of ripping wings off harpies. Has anyone played Devil May Cry 3? I'll have to think about which of these 3 I should buy. If you have an opinion on any of these games and haven't posted please do. [ 01-05-2006, 10:03 AM: Message edited by: Zarr ] |
Not played Devil May Cry 3 as I said but it looks gorgeous and I wouldnt be put off by the supposed difficulty, you gotta love a challenge ;)
|
Well, I payed a visited to my local GAME store today and noticed they are selling God of War for £20. This is interesting as previously it was £35. Devil May Cry 3 is also £20. This makes the decision harder as previously I was leaning towards Devil May Cry 3 due to it's lower price (it was £20 even before the Jan sale).
Decisions, decisions... |
Only played God of war, it's amazing game Best Console game I ever played
How ever if over the top violence and pixelated nudity disturb you I'd stay away... |
God of War is really outstanding...I've played and enjoyed other games on that list, but God of War truly does stand out as the best. It is a touch graphic though.

THESE are my faves (In order)
God of War Prince of Persia (the first Ubisoft one) God of war is AMAZING, and has the best story and graphics ever seen in a PS2 game. WORTH IT! its still 49.99 tho. Prince 1 is value priced at 19.99 now, and LET ME TELL you. Its a one of my favorite PS2 games (or XBOX). The puzzles are amazingly cool, the story is excellent and music is the best. BOTH have top ratings from most websites, and mag's. Those other games, I don't like. |

Thanks all! I'll probably get God of War, although I'm going to wait to see if the Devil May Cry 3 special edition comes out in the UK before I make my final decision. I still have one or two games to finish which will keep me ocupied until then.

I actually wasn't implying games in general, but PS2 titles. What I was implying was your claiming God of War as being the best in those areas is largely dependent upon on the number and/or quality of PS2 games you've played.
|
Ah.. Well, I've played over 100 PS2 games, and most are crap. The rare gems make up for it though..
|
Its not on your list, but the Metal Gear Solid series is amazing. That, sadly, is my only real reason as to why I'm interested in getting a PS3 (when the price considerably drops)

Arx 2 became that dark messiah of might and magic game ziroc.

Well anyway, I was off college this week so decided to work alot of extra shifts at work, so I therefore made alot of extra money. Now I can afford both DMC3 and God of War! I've already bought DMC3 and will buy GOW soon. DMC3 is actually really good, better than the 1st one even. It is hard but never unfair so if you practice you can beat the levels in the game and progress. I'm about 3/4 through now. And would recommend this game to anyone if there looking for an action game on PS2. |
It looks like I am too late to contribute, but DMC3 was really hard, you should get your game play out of that, but also try beating god of war in god mode, lol Now THAT is time consuming. the last boss took me like a week straight. But GOW is probably my favorite game out of that list. I also heard Disgaea mentioned. that game is ubersweet. I also suggest maybe you check out "Star Ocean:till the end of time" which you can get as a PS2 favorite anymore like $20 and if you like that "radiata stories" which is somewhat similiar, IE. made by the same people, but better. I've had a great deal of fun with that game as well. But defintiely get GOW you will not regret it. San andreas was also fun, but if you've played one GTA you've pretty much played them all. I also heard the new POP was really good, but I haven't played it.
Personally i just ordered "from russia with love" any game connery does the voice for has to be sweet, besides i got for $20 including shipping off an EBAY auction ;) after that will probably be star wars battlefront 2 and soul calibur3, but thats just me |
Thanks AzRael. Well, I completed DMC3, it's an excellent game. My mate says he will sell God of War to me for £5 so I'm looking forward to that! I'll get it next tuesday when I next see him.
I had Disgaea but traded it in as I don't play it anymore. A great game, that's why I was interested in the other Nippon Ichi games. I'll check out that Star Ocean game, I think I have heard of that. Thanks again! |
If you enjoy Final Fantasy type RPGs and have plenty of time to kill, you owe it to yourself to try DragonQuest 8. I put over 90 hours into it, and still have more stuff to do. (Although I did finish it with both endings, but there is quite a bit of optional stuff that has nothing to do with the main quest line.)
As for the VGCats post, I wouldn't put much faith into what some obviously pissed off kid posts on a second-rate web comic forum. I think this guy's main problem is that it's not Final Fantasy, plus he doesn't seem to know much about the game either. He complains about constantly being attacked by low level monsters and having no way to deal with it, yet in the game there is a spell you can get and item you can use to stop weaker monsters from attacking you. Most of your younger RPG players are used to save points every other screen, full mana/health when you touch them, mind-blowing full motion video movies, uber-powerful special moves where giant monsters come flying in and annihilate their enemies, etc. Dragon Quest 8 is old school, and it shows. Damn kids are used to having everything handed to them. And...I'm sorry, but VGCats just sucks ass anyways. Hopefully that doesn't offend anyone, as it's just my opinion. I saw it for $20 so i bought "Shadow Hearts: Covenant" and i am really enjoying it so far. Its a RP game set right around World War 1, but it mixes in magic and some other stuff. it made me give up "from Russia with love" and FF2. and I also bought armored core 3 with it and I haven't even thought of touching it yet. so I will keep you posted and if anyone has any input on the game let me know
